Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Other places might have been expecting a cold front wtf polar vortex, but the weather in Fandom was just right for welcoming in new people. The bonfire was mostly going for decoration, but there were also the makings for s'mores among the food offerings.

Mmmm, summer food.

The food was ready, the tables and chairs had been spread across the lawn with just the right amount of glitter on them, and everything was ready to welcome a new batch of folks to the island!

[OCD is coming! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Nina honestly didn't know?

Like, she was well aware of the fact that she was in a weird, weird spot (and it was her weird spot and she was going to cling to it for all she was worth) by being both a student and a teacher, even if none of her classes were allowed to be taught at the school.

So... she was sort of spending about half her time hanging out around the adults?

Well.

This was awkward? Though she was going to pretend it wasn't.

"Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Nina said happily. "I'm, like, teaching what the moose called 'Black Magic Cookery'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even though, like, there's no magic involved?????????????????"

Well, it'd been set up before the graduation ceremony was picketed. He was sure to end up making more hats eventually.

"I mean, like, I'm still in school," Nina said, giggling. "And I never know where I stand................. at least if I'd graduated I'd know what kind of room I'm getting on a trip!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Kathy chuckled at that. "They're letting students teach these days?" she asked. "I don't know if I would have had the guts to do that, but I definitely would have wanted to."

Kathy still felt like she was working up the guts to teach now, but a potential student didn't need to know that.

"Weeeeeeeeell, they're not letting me teach at the school," she confessed. "Like, I don't really get it????????????????? But I'm allowed to teach summer classes and at the community center!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Nina shifted a little.

"Honestly, like, I started teaching because it was either that or fret about where my roomie had gone off to??????????????" And she still fretted about that but, like, this kept her out of some trouble. "It was terrifying the first time but everyone was really great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"I'm pretty sure they could lose their accreditation letting a student teach a for-credit class," Kathy admitted. She wasn't entirely sure how they'd kept it this long, to be quite frank, but letting students teach might just be the bridge too far. "Your roommate - animal, legitimate disappearance, or just went home with no word?"

Honestly, those happened all the time.

So. Yeah. It sucked a lot.

"And, like, most of her things are still in our room............."

Which Nina had not packed up.

Man, Kathy had to hold herself back from pulling Nina into a hug. "I'm so sorry," she said quietly. "Sometimes, though, people go home and get stuck there, no matter how much they wish they could come back. I'm sure she wouldn't have disappeared on you if she'd had the option. I went home my last semester and couldn't get back to the island until a year later. Missed graduation and everything."

Not that she was going to tell Nina the whole backstory there. 'I couldn't come home because I was a zombie, but I'm sure your roommate is fine' kind of undermined the whole 'offering sympathy' thing she was trying for.

It was strange, too, that Nina had told this stranger so much but then... she was the first person who'd asked about the fact that she was teaching, not just about what she was teaching.

And, too, it was easier to admit it to someone who hadn't been friends with Vette. She didn't know if anyone other than Sidon and Prompto still missed her and Nina missed her like she'd miss a limb...

"I can get to her universe," Nina admitted. "But I haven't been able to find any sign of her..............."

She'd looked.

"But you said you came back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's............. that's amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I bet the people who waited for you were so happy when you returned............."

And see, here Liam was feeling a little awkward because conversely, he wasn't teaching anything this summer but he was taking workshops.

The closest thing he'd ever done to anything like that before were the dance lessons on the mainland back when he and Verity had first gotten really serious.

"So... am I supposed to call you Miss Argentum now?" he teased.
