Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Other places might have been expecting a cold front ~~wtf polar vortex~~, but the weather in Fandom was just right for welcoming in new people. The bonfire was mostly going for decoration, but there were also the makings for s'mores among the food offerings.

Mmmm, summer food.

The food was ready, the tables and chairs had been spread across the lawn with just the right amount of glitter on them, and everything was ready to welcome a new batch of folks to the island!

[OCD is coming! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"That," she said, "is definitely not used in my cooking, like, ever................."

"Yeah, I'm definitely seeing why the moose called your cooking 'magic'."

"Anyone can do it," she said or, well, grumbled. "Like, not everyone can do magic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"I am pretty sure not everyone can bake a cake without using flour." He frowned and tilted his head, because flourless baking was a thing. "Or at least without using more than eggs."

"Everyone back home can, if they're taught," she said thoughtfully. "Like, I guess it's weird here but, really, we've got magic back home and none of it is used in cooking??????????????"

"Maybe it's just . . . an every day magic," Duke said. "We've got weird things back home that no one's been taught to do. Not quite on the same level as that, though."

Her cooking did not actually sound at all like a trouble, but it was the best Duke could do comparison-wise.

"I don't think so," she said, "because, like, I've shown people before and they can copy it????????????????"

Suspiciously and resentfully but it could be done!

“People who aren’t from your world,” Duke checked. “... Can they do it when you’re not there?”

"Vette could," Nina said, eyes wide. "I taught her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"Huh." Duke decided against pointing out that Vette wasn't entirely normal herself. "I'm definitely going to have to swing by this class. When's it happening?"

"Tuesdays," she said brightly. "Third period, right after Summer's class!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Where Nina was going to be the least tameable wife ever!

"Oh hey. Mine's that morning. So I'll already be in the area."

"So you've got to come!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'd wanted to be in your class," she admitted. "But, like, my schedule got changed without my permission!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"Well, maybe we can do a class exchange, then. You sneak into mine and I'll sneak into yours."

"I'm, like, super down for that," she said. "I've also, like, told another teacher that her boyfriends can totally crash my class too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Because, pfft, what even were class sign ups?

"Boyfriends," Duke said, leaning on the plural a little. "Nice."

He'd met Kathy briefly. It'd been extremely awkward.

"That's what she said," Nina said, beaming. "Like, I don't really know how that would work with, like, everlasting love and all, but she seems happy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

So Nina was a little in love with the idea.

"Don't think, like, my boyfriend would go for it though............."

"Why can't everlasting love be big enough for multiple people?" Duke asked. "It's everlasting. And you'll never know if you don't ask. Sometimes people change their minds."

"I just, like, don't have much data on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All of my books are two people pairings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

She'd never read a love triangle where all parties wound up together at the end!

"Pretty sure that, like, my boyfriend would think I was leaving him if I mentioned interest in another person................"

Which was awkward. Since... well. Nina had a terrible, horrible crush on a prince. Who'd said she could transfer schools to his world no problem. And who she'd married in an alternate future and had children with...

“So . . . tell him you’re not,” Duke said. “Or that if he hates it you’re happy to stay monogamous but that you think it’s be nice to try. Honestly, most of my relationships have involved multiple people.”

His marriage had been open since day one!

"I don't know if I'd like that," Nina mused thoughtfully and honestly. "And, like, he'd be righter than he knows to be worried????????????????? So, like, I probably won't say anything to him............"

Her road to true love was a weird one.

“Do you want to cheat on him?” Duke asked.

And wondered how he’d gotten into this conversation with a teenager.

It... it was a little odd, how this conversation had happened.

"I would never!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Nina said indignantly. "If, like, I decide I want to pursue someone else I'll break up with him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
