Summer Games: Wednesday, The Park [morning]

"Good morning!" Anakin yelled into the megaphone from the small platform he had erected in the park. "Students, please listen for your names and find your partner or partners as your name is called: Sidon and Aloy; Jason and Rey; Bobby and Paris; Ahsoka and Uma; Theron and Peridot; Astrid and Norman; Tip, Sabine and Beaker."

Once the students were in place, Anakin held up a sheaf of paper in his hand. "Today, with the help of the proprietors in town, we're conducting a Scavenger Hunt. You have a very long list: You must find 15 of the items from that list and either take a picture or video of yourselves completing the tasks. Whoever completes their 15 in the shortest amount of time will win the coveted, terrifying, singing fish," he said, holding his hand out for it to fly to him. It was still shrieking Sabotage as it flew, but now it also rained confetti on anyone close enough to be in its flight path. As Anakin held it, it treated the entire group to holographic footage of Theron being chased by a Roomba.

You're welcome, Theron.

"Right," Anakin said slowly. "Someone come take this thing from me as quickly as possible. On your marks, get set, go."

Anakin has phones available for those who might not be as technologically adept to help complete the hunt. Divide and conquer? One person recording for posterity as the other completes the tasks? YOU DECIDE.

"Gotta get that fish," Peridot was chanting as she looked around for her partner. "Gotta get that fish, gotta get that fish..."

It had been hers, once. Her own folly had let it slip through her fingers.

Theron was starting to wonder if that fish had mind-control powers.

"Sure, we could do that."

Yet.

But Peridot had put a lot of effort into rigging that thing up to fly, dang it!

"Good," she replied, peering up at Theron. "Then we'll need to plot our course carefully, so as to be certain to maximize our scavenging abilities."

Okay, it was hard to top the gremlin fashion show. But even some of the items on the list seemed... odd. 900 ladybugs? A random magic potion?

"A scavenger hunt doesn't seem that weird," said Astrid, but, then again, she hadn't glanced at the list yet.

And then she did.

"I'm sorry, does this say polar bear?"

"It says polar bear," Norman confirmed. "And there's one for the chocolate cherries that are growing in the rooftop garden."

He paused.

"Actually, that one seems pretty straightforward."

"It...seems like an interesting mix," Astrid observed. "Normal to weird and then back again. We don't have to do them in order, do we?"

"Meep meep meep meep meep," Beaker muttered to himself, seeing disaster in this list. "Meep meep."

The mole on the back of Tip's neck flashed wildly as Tip side-eyed Beaker.

"I . . . almost understood that." She looked back at the list. "At least some of these don't look too bad?"

Judging by the radio, this kid tended to blow up just walking down the street, though. She could totally get his nervousness.

Which meant she was eyeing Beaker a little worriedly, because... well, he was Beaker. "How you doing? You okay?"

"I was going to suggest splitting up," Tip said. "But now I worry that'd mean someone getting eaten by a bear."

"BOBBY!" Paris yelled in a voice loud enough to rival Anakin through the megaphone. "Chop chop! Time waits for no man, and neither will I!"

So she seemed fun.

"So I guess I don't need to ask if you're ready to try to win this thing." Why did she want to try to win this thing, anyway?

"I'm going to spin it for my Harvard essay about my decisive leadership and ability to keep focused on multiple goals at once," Paris said, nodding.

They hadn't really talked much or at all, that the player could recall, but they'd shared a few classes, so Jason at least could pick his partner out of a crowd.

"So, should we come up with any sort of strategy?" he said, as he wandered over. "Or should we just wing it?"

"Maybe if we figure out anything we definitely want to do, and then go around to the areas near that?" Rey said. "I like the puppy toes."

"So I guess we're doing this," Aloy said, looking at the crowd in hopes of finding a distinctively fishy shape nearby.

That distinctively fishy shape was never too hard to find, no. The enthusiasm certainly helped, and there was plenty of that as Sidon grinned down at his partner.

"Indeed we are!" he said brightly. "What a fantastic idea! This should prove a good way to perhaps get to know the island a little better, don't you think? Such a shame that there are but a mere fifteen items!"

It certainly wasn't 900 freaking Korok seeds, anyway.

"I think fifteen is about enough," said Aloy who'd be spending a lot of time checking things off her minimap in the future. "I didn't think anyone would be that enthousiastic about this, actually. Where do you want to start?"

Uma was just going to, you know, keep this phone when they were done with...however much of this they were doing. On the one hand, a scavenger hunt sounded a lot like treasure hunting, which was a lot of fun. On the other hand, she had seen the prize and that was no goddamn treasure.
