Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

So, the heat meant that many of the tables and chairs had been set up in the shade, and someone had found outdoor table umbrellas in blue and gold, god help us all. But hey, a little heat never hurt anyone who wasn't a vampire, right?

Ahem. The picnic was open for warm, sunny business.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Tip was basking a little in the sun. Not because she wasn't bothered by the heat and humidity -- this area wasn't too different from where she grew up in Pennsylvania, but summer had never had her favorite weather -- but because it was the real proper Sol sun.

She'd missed that sun.

She had her camera with her, her actual camera, not just her phone camera, to grab pics of her fellow students. Not just the obvious aliens even, this time. J.Lo had been happy to see her school had some life form diversity, but now he wanted to know about everyone she went to school with. Plus -- well. She liked taking pictures.

"Hey Tip!" Roscoe said when he spotted her. "Cool camera. I didn't know you took pictures."

"I haven't gotten it out in a while," Tip admitted. "This place can be really distracting." She held up the camera and centered Roscoe in a shot. "May I?"

"Um, of course," Roscoe said, immediately striking a dramatic pose with one hand on his hip and the other behind his head as he gazed into the distance.

Distracted by a thought, he broke his pose for a moment to ask, "Come to think of it, have you ever taken headshots? I was thinking about getting some done, if you wanna do them."

Tip snapped a couple of shots both in the pose and out of it. "I've mostly taken vacation photos," she admitted. "But I could give it a shot."

"Vacation photos, modeling photos, same thing, right?" Roscoe joked. "All I know how to do is take selfies, and even then they're kinda bad. It's really cool you know how to do this stuff."

"It's mostly all about practice," Tip said, pride creeping into her tone. "And selfies are too awkward to ever be really great, anyway."

"That's true," he granted. "Guess that's why they don't make real cameras with the front-facing selfie cams." Or maybe they did, but he hadn't touched a real, non-cell-phone camera in years, so what did he know? "You got any good shots so far? Maybe you can help me spot the newbies."

"Mostly crowd photos," Tip said. She held the camera up so he could see the digital view screen and skimmed through shots of the students and teachers. There was a guy wearing an enormous gold crown thing in a few of the former shots, and a guy who looked like a human with a yellow lab head in one of the latter. "I haven't met any of the new people yet. Have you?"

"Tip!" Ringo beamed and waved at her friend. "Hey! How's your summer been? All used to Fandom yet?"

"Hey Ringo," Tip greeted. ". . . I don't know if you can get all used to Fandom. But -- I did turn into an orange for a bit, so I guess I finished the initiation?"

Ringo sort of laughed and shook her head. "What was that like? I don't think I've ever turned into a fruit before."

"Full of body horror and humiliation." Tip was not into being an orange. "It was that goat snake thing that turned us into ponies for like a week. I tried to shoot him, so he made me a giant orange with a face."

She still spat on his statue in the park whenever she went by it.

"Ew, that sounds super-icky." She shook her head. "Sorry you had to deal with that."

"Other than that, has your summer been pretty good?" Ringo liked Tip, and wanted the other girl to enjoy her time on the island.

"For the most part, yeah." She smiled. "At least I didn't get turned into any fruits or anything."

"I definitely don't recommend that," Tip said. "You ready for the new school year?"

"Do you want some nachos?" Hanna asked, joining her roommate and offering her plate. "Have you seen anything really new yet?"

"Sure, thanks!" Tip smiled at her. "A couple. There's a nihilistic goth like girl, and this guy wearing a giant gold hat."

"A giant gold hat," Hanna said, blinking, and nibbling at one of the chips herself. "Alien? I can't think of anywhere you could time-travel from where that would make any sense. Maybe another dimension?"

"Maybe. Wherever he's from, they sent him off with a pretty fabulous look. It's like half a sun on his head."

"I'll have to remember to ask him about it." Once she'd seen him, though, Hanna had to admit it wouldn't be hard to remember. That was... something. "What does J.Lo think of the photos you have sent him already?"

"Well, Velcro and I are glad you are back," Hanna said loyally. "I can't blame J.Lo for missing you.... what does he do when you're not there, though?"
