Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

So, the heat meant that many of the tables and chairs had been set up in the shade, and someone had found outdoor table umbrellas in blue and gold, god help us all. But hey, a little heat never hurt anyone who wasn't a vampire, right?

Ahem. The picnic was open for warm, sunny business.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"For the most part, yeah." She smiled. "At least I didn't get turned into any fruits or anything."

"I definitely don't recommend that," Tip said. "You ready for the new school year?"

"I think so?" Ringo pursed her lips. "I kind of feel like, I don't know, there were things I was supposed to do this summer that I didn't. So, sort of like I'm playing catch-up or something."

"What about you?"

Tip shrugged. "It's my first year of high school, so I was kind of stressed about it," she admitted. "But coming here early for the summer really helped. I feel like I know what to expect, tnow."

"The unexpected?" Ringo suggested teasingly, but she was nodding along. "But, yeah, that makes sense. I did the same thing last summer, and I think it helped me a lot."

"Well -- yeah," Tip admitted with a laugh. "But also, like, how the classes work and stuff like that. There's not so much pressure to do really well in summer classes."

There wasn't a lot of pressure to do real well in Fandom's real classes, but Tip didn't know that, yet.

"Yeah, that's true. It's a pretty low-pressure environment."

She grinned. "So what are you taking in the Fall, anyway?" Somehow Ringo doubted those classes would be too high-pressure, either.

"History, What Not to Do in a Fight, and Driver's Ed." Tip wrinkled her nose. "I'm guessing that last one is just for credit. I'm already a really good driver."

Some things you didn't grow out of. Like insisting that teaching yourself to drive at age 11 by nailing cans of corn to your church shoes meant you were really good at it.

"Oh, hey, sounds like we'll be in What Not to Do in a Fight together," Ringo exclaimed excitedly. "But not the others." She shrugged. "I've never actually driven anything before, but I don't think I really need to learn?"

She grinned. "But if I ever change my mind, I can probably just get you to teach me, right?"

"Sure! I taught myself years ago. And I guess you probably won't in a place like Tokyo, but it's helpful if you want to carry a lot of stuff or go out of town."

"Yeah," Ringo nodded. "Not a lot of driving back home. But if I ever wanted to go on a, um," she frowned in concentration, "a road trip?" Was that the right term? "Then it'd probably be useful."

"Definitely useful for roadtrips. I recommend the flying kind. The air cushion really helps with pot holes."

"Flying road trips?" Wait.

"Oh, you mean flying cars, right? Aren't those harder to drive than the regular kind?" Ringo didn't really know, but she thought that was a reasonable guess.

"Not really. But J.Lo designed the controls and he didn't know how the original ones worked, so it takes some getting used to."

"J.Lo?" Ringo didn't think that that sounded familiar.

"My alien best friend, not the pop star. Have I not mentioned him to you before?"

"I don't think so?" Ringo's eyes were wide with worry. Because she sure hoped not. It'd be super-rude for her to have forgotten!

"But, um, I don't think I've met him?"

"You haven't. He hasn't come to visit yet. You'd remember if you had. He's an alien who looks soooort of like a six legged frog thing."

"Oh." Ringo tried not to look relieved at the discovery she wasn't just terribly rude. "So I guess he's from back home for you, then?"

"Yup. He keeps asking me when 'the weekend of parents' is."

Ringo laughed. "So I guess I should be looking forward to that, huh?"

"Well, hopefully for more than just my friend," Tip said. "You have any family that comes around then?"

"Um, well, not last year?" Ringo smiled slightly. "I think they were trying to give me some spaces since I hadn't been away from home for all that long. But maybe this year my sisters will visit?"

They hadn't really talked about it, actually.
