Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

So, the heat meant that many of the tables and chairs had been set up in the shade, and someone had found outdoor table umbrellas in blue and gold, god help us all. But hey, a little heat never hurt anyone who wasn't a vampire, right?

Ahem. The picnic was open for warm, sunny business.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Oh, hey, sounds like we'll be in What Not to Do in a Fight together," Ringo exclaimed excitedly. "But not the others." She shrugged. "I've never actually driven anything before, but I don't think I really need to learn?"

She grinned. "But if I ever change my mind, I can probably just get you to teach me, right?"

"Sure! I taught myself years ago. And I guess you probably won't in a place like Tokyo, but it's helpful if you want to carry a lot of stuff or go out of town."

"Yeah," Ringo nodded. "Not a lot of driving back home. But if I ever wanted to go on a, um," she frowned in concentration, "a road trip?" Was that the right term? "Then it'd probably be useful."

"Definitely useful for roadtrips. I recommend the flying kind. The air cushion really helps with pot holes."

"Flying road trips?" Wait.

"Oh, you mean flying cars, right? Aren't those harder to drive than the regular kind?" Ringo didn't really know, but she thought that was a reasonable guess.

"Not really. But J.Lo designed the controls and he didn't know how the original ones worked, so it takes some getting used to."

"J.Lo?" Ringo didn't think that that sounded familiar.

"My alien best friend, not the pop star. Have I not mentioned him to you before?"

"I don't think so?" Ringo's eyes were wide with worry. Because she sure hoped not. It'd be super-rude for her to have forgotten!

"But, um, I don't think I've met him?"

"You haven't. He hasn't come to visit yet. You'd remember if you had. He's an alien who looks soooort of like a six legged frog thing."

"Oh." Ringo tried not to look relieved at the discovery she wasn't just terribly rude. "So I guess he's from back home for you, then?"

"Yup. He keeps asking me when 'the weekend of parents' is."

Ringo laughed. "So I guess I should be looking forward to that, huh?"

"Well, hopefully for more than just my friend," Tip said. "You have any family that comes around then?"

"Um, well, not last year?" Ringo smiled slightly. "I think they were trying to give me some spaces since I hadn't been away from home for all that long. But maybe this year my sisters will visit?"

They hadn't really talked about it, actually.

"Yeah? How many sisters do you have?"

Ringo's expression lit up a bit at that question.

"Three! Two older sisters, and a younger." She was smiling broadly because, well, her sisters were awesome. "Ume's kinda quiet, but the other two would probably really like Fandom, actually."

"Then you should totally ask them to come. Don't you want to show this place off?"

"I guess I can't argue with that." Ringo grinned. "And maybe show them off a bit, too, since most people on the island haven't had a chance to meet them."

"Well, I for one am going to look forward to it."

Ringo giggled. "I hope you don't wind up disappointed."

"I doubt it. I have really low standards." That was . . . almost true. She didn't expect much from people, anyway.

It didn't seem like Ringo was taking that as anything other than banter. "Well, hopefully me and my family can at least meet them."

"And you can meet my crazy alien best friend," Tip said happily. "And . . . probably my mom. I mean, it is Parents Weekend."

"Is it bad if I'm more looking forward to the best friend thing than the mom thing?" Ringo didn't really know how to interact with parents. She didn't have any herself, and hadn't really met many of her friends', either.
