Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

So, the heat meant that many of the tables and chairs had been set up in the shade, and someone had found outdoor table umbrellas in blue and gold, god help us all. But hey, a little heat never hurt anyone who wasn't a vampire, right?

Ahem. The picnic was open for warm, sunny business.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Anders roamed the picnic with a his staff haphazardly strapped to his back, melting ice cream bar in one hand, a smudge of chocolate on his chin, and a pleased expression on his face. Even the fact only one slim year stood between him and whatever graduation would bring couldn't bring him down much.

Anders was the first person Margaery had seen who was even remotely dressed in anything like Westerosi clothing - the staff was a bit odd, but it wasn't as though she'd seen much of her own country. Perhaps having a stick attached to one's back was very in fashion outside of the Reach.

She was staring a bit intensely, and would have caught herself had it not been such a long few hours already, today. Margaery was more homesick than she'd admit, and she was scanning his person for signs of any sort of sigil she might recognize. Even a minor House would do. She was desperate, here.

Anders noticed the girl staring at him after a moment. His first thought was to be flattered. (She was rather absurdly pretty.)

His second thought was that this might be trouble. Her clothes were ornate for Ferelden, but maybe not for other parts of Thedas. And it definitely seemed there was some hint of recognition in her eyes.

"Hello," he said, wandering over. "I'm Anders. You must be new here."

"Is it so obvious?" Margaery asked, blushing at being caught staring but smiling easily all the same. He hadn't included a title or House - usually even smallfolk would claim some sort of allegiance to their lords when she had to talk to them. "Lady Margaery of House Tyrell," she said, hoping for any sign of recognition. Anything at all. Please, whichever of the Seven was in charge of answering prayers for this sort of predicament, please. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Anders - I was just admiring your...."

She trailed off, gesturing behind her own back with a raised eyebrow.

"My staff?" Anders asked, looking over his shoulder as though to check whether it was still there. "Now, there's something I don't hear from every Lady I meet."

He seemed pleasant, but didn't show any familiarity with her name.

"I don't know Tyrell," he said, half-apologetic because she seemed to expect he would. "Are you from Tevinter?"

He'd never met anyone from the Imperium, but it would make as much sense as anything.

Margaery's smile faltered, temporarily, before she heaved a little sigh. "Westeros," she said, a little sheepish. "The Reach? Highgarden?"

She realized how silly she sounded, even as she listed the places most familiar to her that no one here had ever heard of. "I don't know Tevinter. Is that near here? And - er, sorry, but you've got a bit of -" She gestured at her chin discreetly.

Anders, going pink, rubbed a paper napkin across his chin before dropping it and the sticky remains of his ice cream into a nearby trash can and giving his full attention to Margaery.

"Thanks," he said briefly. "And I'm sorry, but I don't know those places. Tevinter's a country at home. Nowhere near here."

"You have a wizard's staff." It was somewhere between an amused statement and an accusation.

"No, it's mine," Anders said, grinning a greeting at Thorin. "Which makes it a mage's staff."

Obviously.

"I like to have it for the picnics in case trouble shows up," he explained. "

"Should I have brought an ax?" And then terrify the newbies. Because that was a good idea.

"Now that'd make an impression on the new students," Anders said. "Maybe not the kind you want."

He shook his head. "Anyhow, probably not. I just worry about Cassandra's friends trying something cute."

Not that his staff would be much help against a gang of Templars or Seekers, but Anders was a bit of an optimist on this point.

Who was the worst ever and Thorin didn't enjoy arguing with at all.

"No, but sometimes I think shooting a few fireballs at her wouldn't be such a bad thing."

Anders didn't even really know Lucille; this was just secondhand meanness.

"The Templars and that lot," he added. "Since -- Maker's breath, I didn't talk to you after I got back, did I?"

"Anders!" Ringo waved happily as she strode toward him. "How's it going?"

She'd picked her picnic ensemble in honor of Kathy: a bikini top and cutoff shorts. She also had some ice cream of her own, holding a precariously balanced cone with a lot of care to prevent it from melting all over her.

"It's a good day so far," Anders said, eyeing her. "How are you? Interesting outfit you chose."

Ringo flushed slightly, but managed a grin. "Well, it's a summer picnic, so it's sort of a tradition, right?"

"I guess it is," Anders said. "And even if I don't walk around shirtless, I'm not going to complain if other people want to."

A pause. "Not that you're exactly shirtless."

She flushed a bit more, but laughed. "Um, yeah. I don't think that I'm that daring." Just the thought of it made her duck her head slightly.

"You meet anyone interesting yet?"

So it was nearing the end of the picnic and Dante was bored; gravitating towards his roommate seemed like a natural choice.

Anders nodded toward Margaery, after a quick smile at Dante. "Only her," he said. "Seems as though her world's a bit like mine. I like her dress, too."

Or,more precisely, he liked her dress's neckline. He was easy to please that way.

"I met her," Dante mused, looking her way. "She's hot."

He was not nearly as subtle as Anders.

"Girl in a tree," Dante said, "She seems cool. And then there's this guy who says he used to be an adult who lost an arm and a leg, but now he's a teenager and real fucking upset about it...?"

The WTF look said it all, really.
