Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

So, the heat meant that many of the tables and chairs had been set up in the shade, and someone had found outdoor table umbrellas in blue and gold, god help us all. But hey, a little heat never hurt anyone who wasn't a vampire, right?

Ahem. The picnic was open for warm, sunny business.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Now that'd make an impression on the new students," Anders said. "Maybe not the kind you want."

He shook his head. "Anyhow, probably not. I just worry about Cassandra's friends trying something cute."

Not that his staff would be much help against a gang of Templars or Seekers, but Anders was a bit of an optimist on this point.

Who was the worst ever and Thorin didn't enjoy arguing with at all.

"No, but sometimes I think shooting a few fireballs at her wouldn't be such a bad thing."

Anders didn't even really know Lucille; this was just secondhand meanness.

"The Templars and that lot," he added. "Since -- Maker's breath, I didn't talk to you after I got back, did I?"

"My apologies, this past season has been... strange," Thorin replied, giving him a concerned look. "What happened?"

"The short version? I did something dumb after Kathy died" -- there was still a flinch on that -- "And Cassandra caught me and escorted me home. I managed to run back here, but she wasn't exactly pleased. It's been a strange few months for me, too."

Anders let out a long sigh, as if weighing how much to tell Thorin.

"Do you trust me?"

Which was, of course, a question that never made anyone sound more trustworthy.

Thorin gave him a look that was somewhere between resignation, disapproval, and acceptance of all these things. He normally only used it with his siblings, Anders.

"I trust that if you call it dumb, you are aware of your mistakes and I cannot judge them."

He might still smack Anders, though.

Anders took a second to think on that, decided it meant to go ahead, and spoke.

"I, er. I wanted to see if I could bring Kathy back. It ..involved trying to summon a demon. And yes, I knew how stupid it was even when I was doing it."

He just hadn't cared. Probably being smacked was the least he could expect.

Thorin took a deep breath, remaining calm. For now.

"And you will not be doing it again, right?"

"Never," Anders promised, absolutely sincere. "I know better than to play with demons. It just -- have you ever known something was a bad idea, but you did it anyhow, because it was the only idea you had?"

"Only where my siblings are involved," Thorin replied. "I... do not get to make mistakes. I'm the crown prince after my father."

Anders blinked. "So you'll be king some day. Wait, did you tell me that?"

"So no," Anders said, echoing the narration. "And I didn't say it mattered. It was just -- a surprise."

Which was probably exactly why Thorin didn't bring it up.

"I have no desire to rule," he admitted after a moment. "But I'm the eldest of my siblings. And I fear Frerin would start a war on accident should he be king."

"Starting wars is usually bad," Anders nodded wisely. "Is it nice for you, being away from people who know?"

Thorin shook his head and sighed. "I have continued to try, but nothing as worked so far."

He did, however, have a thriving Etsy shop to pass the time.

And there was the smack on the arm he richly deserved.
