Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Picnic-ing in January - still not the best idea ever! But there were tables and chairs set up in the sun, and a nice bonfire going, and plenty of warm food for everyone to encourage socializing for as long as possible.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Raven had decided to play nice for her new sib and worn her usual 'normal human' shape, complete with weather appropriate jacket and scarf. But when it was time to go relax in the crowd and enjoy the rest of the picnic, she let herself relax into her natural form, mimicking a simple tank top and shorts as a nod to modesty.

The new students might as well get used to the weirdness early, after all.

There was a blue girl. Lucille blinked, then realized she was staring and looked away. The girl's lack of clothing (underwear hardly counted as being dressed after all) was improper enough, but the color of her skin was... Lucille thought it best to stare down at her food.

Aha, her first victim surprisee. It'd been ages since Raven last got to tease one of the pre-moderns. She lifted her hand in a wave, and since the new girl seemed determined not to look at her, called out. "Hi! I'm Raven. What's your name?"

Oh no, the blue girl was speaking to her. Lucille considered for a moment to pretend she wasn't hearing, but if the girl was persistent that was only going to prove embarrassing. So she drew a breath, arranged her face is some kind of smile and raised her gaze.

"Hello, miss Raven, my name is Lucille Sharpe."

Ignore the blue, she told herself. Ignore the blue.

That attempt at a smile was adorable. "A pleasure to meet you, Lucille." Raven offered her hand, her 1950s manners deployed in full (her outfit notwithstanding). "What brings you to Fandom?"

Lucille looked at the blue hand in front of her and hesitated. Would she be contagious in some way? But bravery seemed to be the best course of action and she shook Raven's hand lightly.

"I am to attend school here. And yourself?"

Not contagious. But a little bit scaly. "The same," Raven said, smiling. "It's my last semester, actually. I can't quite decide if I'm excited to graduate or sorry to eventually leave."

There weren't a whole lot of other places around where she felt comfortable teasing people with her blue-ness, after all.

"So, is it... a good school, in your opinion?"

Lucille could at least offer an attempt at conversation, even with a blue girl with scaly hands. Thomas would think she was joking when she wrote to him about this.

Joking was a better assumption than demon, at least.

"It's definitely non-traditional," Raven said. "But it's been very good to me. If you're hoping to learn a lot about, like, math, you might be disappointed."

Raven jumped, then spun around with a smirk. "Why you," she said, not actually angry. "Happy New Year."

"Happy New Year," Jalian said back, grinning. "You should grow eyes in the back of your head," she teased.

"At a welcome picnic, I shouldn't need to," Raven returned. "Though it would add an extra little something to freak out the new kids."

Jalian laughed. "Have you freaked out many yet?" She frowned. "Will any be a problem, do you think?"

"One girl kept trying to avert her eyes," Raven said. "So I got her to shake hands with me. She seems like the Victorian type, though, so it might have been what I'm wearing as much as the blue skin." As to the other question. . . . "And they'd better not. Or they'll have to learn quick."

"Ah!" Jalian looked around. "Lucille?" she pointed her out. She was the most covered-up girl that Jalian had seen here. Apart from Cassandra, anyway, but that was different.

"That's her! She called me 'Miss Raven'. She's going to be fun to tease."

Kathy had kept her eyes locked on Raven and Lucille throughout their conversation. She recognized several of Lucille's expressions from ones that her mother sometimes wore and had been ready to intervene at a moment's notice if it seemed like she needed to.

Not that she didn't think that Raven couldn't handle herself, but Kathy firmly believed she shouldn't have to.

"Well, that seemed to have gone well," she said, sauntering over after Lucille had departed, seemingly amicably. "Shall we name you ambassador to the Victorians then?"

"You're just enjoying the fact that you get to flaunt your lovely legs while I have to hide mine under seven layers of clothing to stay warm," Kathy accused with a laugh. "I know how your mind works, Raven."

"Now now," Raven said. "I'm enjoying that and being naked to Victorians, too. I can multitask."

"At least I'm a good influence on you in some respect," Kathy laughed, slinging an arm around Raven's shoulders. "I knew there had to be at least one." Said shoulder got an affectionate squeeze. "How was Christmas, by the way? Did you manage to avoid Charles' parents?"

Raven nodded. "He stayed in Oxford through the break -- no one wanted to stick him on a boat for a week each way to go home for it -- so we didn't see them at all. It was just Charles and me and a pub full of mid-century lads for the week."
