Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Picnic-ing in January - still not the best idea ever! But there were tables and chairs set up in the sun, and a nice bonfire going, and plenty of warm food for everyone to encourage socializing for as long as possible.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

That made Jalian laugh. "Are there many bawdy Christmas songs? I thought it was a holiday for a religion."

"Maybe once upon a time," Raven said. "But celebrate a holiday long enough and someone's going to write something dirty about it. Especially when lads are involved."

"Boys, you mean?" Jalian had heard the term, but she wasn't sure if Raven meant something more by it than just "young males".

"English boys," Raven said. "It might not be quite a thing yet in the '50s, but English boys have a whole 'lad culture'. Basically, they're excessively silly."

Jalian laughed. "Most boys are excessively silly. Even here."

"Well then, these guys must be astronomically silly, if they bothered to put a name on it."

"Are they fun silly?" Jalian asked, grinning. "What are the songs like?"

"For a bit. I think it's probably more fun when you're also a drunken lad." Charles seemed to have had a grand old time, for instance. "Mostly, the songs are loud and very poorly pronounced."

"Were you being a lad?" Jalian asked. It seemed the next logical question.

"No." Raven sighed. "Charles would have disapproved."

And made grumpy faces and sent her scolding telepathic messages all night.

Jalian's expression said what she thought of Charles. She probably shouldn't actually say anything.

"Your brother sounds very annoying."

Jalian was bad at "should". And tact.

Well, Charles was annoying. And very, very self-righteous.

"He has his moments," Raven said, because annoying or not, he was her brother. "But he was the first person I ever met who wasn't afraid of me, so I forgive him."

Jalian conceded the point with a shrug. "People who are afraid of you are stupid," she said vehemently.

"You'll get no argument from me," Raven assured her. "Unfortunately, they sometimes roam in packs."

That had been a rough one to reencounter before the holiday.

"Too many to knife at once." Jalian scowled. She gave Raven an apologetic look. "I didn't mean to make you think of all the bad things."

Raven shrugged. "They come up sometimes." She smiled and leaned in to bump shoulders with Jalian. "Besides, your righteous anger about it is cute."

Jalian grinned back. "You think so?" She leaned closer to Raven. "I worry for you."

"You don't have to," Raven said. "The days of being chased by angry mobs are behind me."

"Good." Jalian grinned impishly. "But I can chase you if you get bored."

Raven laughed. "Promise?"

"All around the dorms, if you like," Jalian answered. "Or in the woods, or on the beach."

"I may take you up on that. You know, if my last semester gets too stressful."

"Your last semester?" Jalian's face fell. "I forgot it was so soon. Will you return to your own timeline?"

Raven shook her head. "Kathy and I are talking about getting a place in LA after graduation." She saw Jalian's expression and moved for another shoulder bump. "We're also talking about not missing our last summer here, either, though. There's still some time."

"I'm glad." Jalian smiled and went for a hand on Raven's hip. "We should have another date."
