Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Everyone might have been getting ready for the fall semester, but it was definitely still summertime in Fandom. The temperature was high, the wind was low, and it was only going to get hotter once everyone arrived.

There were chairs and tables set out around the lawn, some in shady spots and some out in the sun, and there was a long table of ~~moddable~~ food culminating in a table full of ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sorbet choices. There were also stacks of nametags for people to label themselves with, and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything in order, it was time to welcome some new people!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Current students who had been assigned new rooms and/or roommates had been handwavily informed of the change, but the list had been posted for everyone to see at one of the tables:

Behold, pumpkin season will soon be upon us in full!

Raven was sure to end up topless for "tradition"'s sake by the end of the picnic, but she didn't want to scare off her latest little sib too quickly. So for the time being she was mimicking a perfectly classy blue and white number, complete with mimicked name tag to make her easier to recognize if her new sib spotted her first.

So, apparently Hardison had been here long enough to be given a teaching buddy of his own. So long as he didn't get ~~another~~ robot, he figured he'd be okay. Especially since he recognized the name Didi from broadcasts, so it wasn't like he'd have to explain the whole island.

Thank god.

So rather than hunting down some poor, innocent new teacher and hopefully getting to them before the crazy could, Hardison figured he'd have plenty of time to get a plate of snacks and chat with people while keeping a weather eye out for his new buddy.

...And possibly get some idea of what to tell his new buddy that wasn't just geeking out over how awesome the Danger Shop was.

Eliot had gotten a decent look at some of the new students on the shuttle ride over from BWI, but he was still scanning the crowd and assessing any new folks he spotted. Old habits died extremely hard, especially when said habits had saved your life a few dozen times over.

The little bowl of bright pink sorbet was kind of ruining the whole badass hitter effect, though. Whatever. Watermelon sorbet was delicious.

Pinkie was so excited to be teaching again she was ~~practically~~ literally vibrating. Which was cool, because it made her voice sound all silly!

Which would be why she was vibrating slowly across the picnic giggling delightedly to herself. Because, hey, when you were the token brain-breaker of the island, you might as well go all the way.

There is no responsible, only FOOD.

Parker was sitting on one of the tables, the better to be closer to the food. Scrutinizing the new kids and new teachers alike, and then occasionally popping out of nowhere to steal someone else's food (Eliot). Or spot (Hardison).

Kathy didn't have a little sibling this time around, but she did have a new roommate. One she needed to have a word with, apparently. "Okay," she said, pointing at Raven. "How is it you were the one going on and on about upholding important Fandom traditions, but I'm the one in a bikini today?"

"Because I'm the one with a new little sibling I'm trying not to traumatize," Raven said, grinning. "We'll match later, I promise."

"This is entirely unfair," Kathy said, folding her arms over her chest and unsuccessfully fighting off a blush. "For...reasons. That I will inform you of just as soon as I think of them. Just know they exist."

Granted, she was wearing a shirt over her bikini, but still! She was going to feel vastly under-dressed until she saw other people wearing a similar lack of clothing.

"It is," Raven agreed readily. "You look far cuter than anyone else here. Someone's sure to be jealous."

Not helping the blushing, Raven, seriously.

"You're just trying to get out of the epic thumping I'm going to give you later," she threatened. "It won't work, though. I am immune to flattery."

Suuuuuuuure.

"So how was teacher buddy bondin' time?" Hardison teased. "You an' Agent Washington finally put your differences aside an' become the friends I always knew you were meant to be?"

Your boyfriend was an asshole, Eliot. FYI.

"Right. Because it absolutely couldn't be that I actually think you look great."

You would think that after all this time, Hardison would be immune to startling when Parker teleported next to him out of nowhere. You would, however, be mistaken. Which was why he was resignedly patting at his shirt with a napkin, trying to get the Squeeze Orange Soda out of the fabric before it set.

"Hey mama," he greeted cheerfully. It wasn't her fault he'd started. Okay, it kind of was, but--never mind. He was still happy to see her. "How much chocolate you have so far?"

He was trying to keep track so he and Eliot would know what kind of drastic measures they needed to take later.

What, like he hadn't noticed that already?

"I awed him with my cynicism."

It wasn't even a lie.

Eliot was absolutely used to how Parker seemed to teleport in and out (or was when he wasn't quietly freaking out with stage fright, anyway). He held his dish of sorbet out for her to take a bite.

A bite, Parker. There was a whole buffet over there for you to steal from, you know.

"You end up with a teachin' buddy this time around?"

Again, just making her blush harder, Raven!

"Don't be silly," Kathy mumbled, kicking at a patch of dirt while she tried to get her stupid cheeks under control. It was easier to write off compliments as teasing than to accept them properly.

"...You think so?"

It was always good to get a reminder! Which was also why Hardison was going to attempt to steal some of Eliot's sorbet.

"I bet," he said. "What were you talkin' about? Your views on the military industrial complex?"

It was now Raven's personal mission to get Kathy to accept compliments as they were offered.

"Absolutely. And you know I have impeccable style, so my opinion's worth quite a bit."

"Lack of moon missions." Eliot shrugged. "He was wearin' that damn armor."

Because that definitely explained why they were talking about the moon.

Well, she'd mostly been broken of the habit of apologizing every five minutes, so that was a good new goal to have!

"That's true," Kathy said, eyeing Raven's dress with unconcealed envy. It was gorgeous. "You have no idea how disappointed I am that I can't actually borrow any of the clothes you wear."

To be fair, even if most of Raven's clothing did exist, Kathy wouldn't be able to wear it anyway. They were very much not the same size in certain...areas.

"...To pick up a buncha kids?" Hardison asked. "How'd he even get through airport security in that rig?"

Now Hardison was almost disappointed he hadn't woken up early enough to tag along. Almost.
