Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Everyone might have been getting ready for the fall semester, but it was definitely still summertime in Fandom. The temperature was high, the wind was low, and it was only going to get hotter once everyone arrived.

There were chairs and tables set out around the lawn, some in shady spots and some out in the sun, and there was a long table of ~~moddable~~ food culminating in a table full of ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sorbet choices. There were also stacks of nametags for people to label themselves with, and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything in order, it was time to welcome some new people!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

So, apparently Hardison had been here long enough to be given a teaching buddy of his own. So long as he didn't get ~~another~~ robot, he figured he'd be okay. Especially since he recognized the name Didi from broadcasts, so it wasn't like he'd have to explain the whole island.

Thank god.

So rather than hunting down some poor, innocent new teacher and hopefully getting to them before the crazy could, Hardison figured he'd have plenty of time to get a plate of snacks and chat with people while keeping a weather eye out for his new buddy.

...And possibly get some idea of what to tell his new buddy that wasn't just geeking out over how awesome the Danger Shop was.

"Oh,hi," Didi said casually as she sauntered up to Hardison, offering a hand to shake. "Hardison, right? You get to tell me all about how amazing teaching here is."

She ... actually wasn't being sarcastic.

"Hey," Hardison said, taking her hand. She didn't seem like a robot. Excellent. "That's me. Nice to meet you, Didi." He knew there was something about her that set Eliot on edge a bit, but whatever it was, he wasn't seeing it. "Yo, fair warning, I start down that road an' I'm likely to end up in a geek-spiral about how cool the tech in the Danger Shop is," he said with a laugh. "You ever teach before?"

She looked a little young, but then, so did he.

On the other hand, he really hadn't ever taught before.

Didi shook her head, smiling back at him and very much not a robot. "Not formally, anyhow. I'm almost a blank slate about this stuff. Feel free to geek spiral at me all you want."

"See, now how come my partners can't be that cool?" Hardison asked. Though, really, Parker was generally willing to let him blather on as much as he liked, he just couldn't expect her to have paid attention to all of that. "Man, the Danger Shop is the best part of gettin' to teach!" He probably should have said something about the opportunity to teach young minds but whatever. "It's one giant computer program in a room--like the Holodeck on Galaxy Quest! You just input whatever you need into the system an' it'll spring up around you, feelin' as real as you or I do."

He paused, remember what Didi was teaching. "Uhh, I'll understand if it ain't somethin' you end up usin' much, though. Philosophy course, right?"

"That's what I called it," Didi nodded, since she wasn't sure how much philosophy she'd actually be teaching. "But you never know. Maybe using the computer to add dancing panda bears to the classroom will be exactly the touch it needs."

"That's pretty much what alla my classes were missin', back when I was in high school," Hardison agreed with a laugh. "Maybe I woulda paid more attention to 'em if they'd come with dancin' bears."

Doubtful, as he'd been the brilliant student trapped in classes that didn't come close to challenging him, but it might have helped. A bit.

"So, what made you make the jump from bartendin' to teachin'?" he asked. "Yo, no judgement here 'bout that. I pretty much did the same over the summer."

Except he wasn't even properly employed at Luke's.

"It was pretty much a whim," Didi admitted. "I like talking to people, and not too many kids wander into the bar. So I figured, if I taught, it'd help me get to know a whole bunch of people. Why did you make the switch?"

"Bored, mostly," Hardison admitted. "I ain't never been much for not doin' a whole lot. Contrary to what my partners say, even I have a limit to how much time I can spend in front of a computer. So I figured what the heck, I'd give it a shot, since apparently they weren't lookin' for actual qualifications."

Which he could have forged, sure, but that would have felt weird. You didn't con your crew and since they were here, Fandom was kind of an extended crew.

"It was a pretty easy job to get," Didi agreed. "I guess the school just gets the people it needs. But yeah, getting bored was in there for me, too."

"So why you choose Philosophy of Loss?" Hardison asked. "Not sayin' I think it's out of place for this school. Just curious what made you choose it."

Didi shrugged. "It's just something I think about a lot,"she said. "It's kind of a risk of being who I am."

"Uhhh...goth?" Hardison hazarded.

"Something like that," Didi said lightly.

Sorry, Didi; 'physical manifestation of Death' didn't jump to the forefront of Hardison's mind. He hadn't been on island nearly long enough for something like that to be his go-to.

"You wear the look well," he told her, sincere. Half the time, he dressed pretty skater-punk without ever having been on a board, so Didi got points for being authentic as well. "I like the ankh. S'a cool touch."
