Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Everyone might have been getting ready for the fall semester, but it was definitely still summertime in Fandom. The temperature was high, the wind was low, and it was only going to get hotter once everyone arrived.

There were chairs and tables set out around the lawn, some in shady spots and some out in the sun, and there was a long table of ~~moddable~~ food culminating in a table full of ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sorbet choices. There were also stacks of nametags for people to label themselves with, and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything in order, it was time to welcome some new people!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Kathy didn't have a little sibling this time around, but she did have a new roommate. One she needed to have a word with, apparently. "Okay," she said, pointing at Raven. "How is it you were the one going on and on about upholding important Fandom traditions, but I'm the one in a bikini today?"

"Because I'm the one with a new little sibling I'm trying not to traumatize," Raven said, grinning. "We'll match later, I promise."

"This is entirely unfair," Kathy said, folding her arms over her chest and unsuccessfully fighting off a blush. "For...reasons. That I will inform you of just as soon as I think of them. Just know they exist."

Granted, she was wearing a shirt over her bikini, but still! She was going to feel vastly under-dressed until she saw other people wearing a similar lack of clothing.

"It is," Raven agreed readily. "You look far cuter than anyone else here. Someone's sure to be jealous."

Not helping the blushing, Raven, seriously.

"You're just trying to get out of the epic thumping I'm going to give you later," she threatened. "It won't work, though. I am immune to flattery."

Suuuuuuuure.

"Right. Because it absolutely couldn't be that I actually think you look great."

Again, just making her blush harder, Raven!

"Don't be silly," Kathy mumbled, kicking at a patch of dirt while she tried to get her stupid cheeks under control. It was easier to write off compliments as teasing than to accept them properly.

"...You think so?"

It was now Raven's personal mission to get Kathy to accept compliments as they were offered.

"Absolutely. And you know I have impeccable style, so my opinion's worth quite a bit."

Well, she'd mostly been broken of the habit of apologizing every five minutes, so that was a good new goal to have!

"That's true," Kathy said, eyeing Raven's dress with unconcealed envy. It was gorgeous. "You have no idea how disappointed I am that I can't actually borrow any of the clothes you wear."

To be fair, even if most of Raven's clothing did exist, Kathy wouldn't be able to wear it anyway. They were very much not the same size in certain...areas.

"You know, I hadn't even thought of that. I was just thinking that you must like all the extra closet space you have now."

"Which has me thinking of all the extra money I'm going to have to spend filling it," Kathy said with a wink. "You'll come along and help me pick stuff out, right? I think the salesgirl I usually ask for advice is getting worried I don't have any friends."

To be fair, a few years ago and she'd have been right. On the other hand, a few years ago, Kathy wouldn't have dreamed of wearing any of the clothing in that store.

"I think that sounds like a lovely plan."

"We can add that to our list of roommate bonding plans," Kathy said with a laugh. "Show the newbies how it's done."

Yeah, Kathy might have just overheard Xanthippe's reaction to her roommate's identity.

It was hard to miss.

"Well, we do have an advantage. It'd be rude to lord that over them too much."

Kathy heaved a great sigh. "You never let me have any fun."

And then grinned. Because--really.

"Now now," Raven said. "I believe you'll find that what I do is make sure you have fun responsibly. Since you're so new to it and all."

"So, what's my first step to having fun responsibly?" Kathy asked. "I look to you for guidance, oh wise mentor."

Even if the last time she did that, she'd ended up in a bikini. Even Ezra was still wearing a shirt. For now.

For now.

"Step one is to relax. Fun comes when you let go of your worries, even just for a little while."

"...I have no idea how to even do that," Kathy said. "At least, not deliberately. What should I focus on instead?"

Did Raven mean guided meditation? Kathy could probably do that?

"Learning how to relax," Raven said. "I'm not saying you don't ever get to worry about anything; you're never going to be able to do that. But you can still learn to let go for even a few minutes here and there."

"Well, you'll have to teach me this art," Kathy said easily. "I mean, I can clear my mind to focus on things? But I'm pretty well stuck inside my own head unless I'm doing something intensely physical, like a routine or patrol or whatever."
