Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Everyone might have been getting ready for the fall semester, but it was definitely still summertime in Fandom. The temperature was high, the wind was low, and it was only going to get hotter once everyone arrived.

There were chairs and tables set out around the lawn, some in shady spots and some out in the sun, and there was a long table of ~~moddable~~ food culminating in a table full of ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sorbet choices. There were also stacks of nametags for people to label themselves with, and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything in order, it was time to welcome some new people!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Eliot had gotten a decent look at some of the new students on the shuttle ride over from BWI, but he was still scanning the crowd and assessing any new folks he spotted. Old habits died extremely hard, especially when said habits had saved your life a few dozen times over.

The little bowl of bright pink sorbet was kind of ruining the whole badass hitter effect, though. Whatever. Watermelon sorbet was delicious.

"So how was teacher buddy bondin' time?" Hardison teased. "You an' Agent Washington finally put your differences aside an' become the friends I always knew you were meant to be?"

Your boyfriend was an asshole, Eliot. FYI.

What, like he hadn't noticed that already?

"I awed him with my cynicism."

It wasn't even a lie.

It was always good to get a reminder! Which was also why Hardison was going to attempt to steal some of Eliot's sorbet.

"I bet," he said. "What were you talkin' about? Your views on the military industrial complex?"

"Lack of moon missions." Eliot shrugged. "He was wearin' that damn armor."

Because that definitely explained why they were talking about the moon.

"...To pick up a buncha kids?" Hardison asked. "How'd he even get through airport security in that rig?"

Now Hardison was almost disappointed he hadn't woken up early enough to tag along. Almost.

"We just picked them up curbside. Airport security never saw him."

It might've been a more interesting trip if they had.

Decision to sleep: confirmed as a good idea. Excellent.

"What did the kids think?" he asked. "Or did you scare most of 'em off from talkin' to you with that scowl?"

"One of 'em decided we were kidnapping him," Eliot said, shaking his head. "And one of the other ones was already drunk."

He did not have high hopes for this crop of new students.

"Okay, so one has a real high opinion of himself an' the other..." Hardison shook his head. "Did you confiscate whatever the other kid had left?"

Because Hardison a) still clung to the idea that Fandom sometimes did things the way they'd be done in normal high schools, and b) was not prepared for the reality that was Frank Doyle.

"He had an entire clinking bag left," Eliot said. "This kid makes Nate in LA year one look -- well, sober."

Basically, trying to confiscate anything would have been an immediate lost cause.

"Well, that's a horrifying analogy," Hardison said, rubbing his chin. "So, like, do we do somethin'? Talk to someone? Or is it not our job if he ain't our student...?"

He wasn't entirely sure how it worked, but looking into stuff for the home in Toronto had his child-protection instincts in overdrive.

"The kid had at least three drinks between me openin' the shuttle door and him takin' a seat," Eliot said. "I'm half convinced he actually lives on the stuff."

"I hear you're my teaching buddy," Claire greeted him, still not sure why they needed teaching buddies or what the deal was there.

"Heard that as well," Eliot said. "Nice to know they didn't assign me a crazy one, this time. How've you been doin', Claire?"

"I was a bird for a week and I'm still here," she said. "I think this place slipped me crazy pills. You?"

"Haven't managed to turn into a bird yet," Eliot said. "Mostly been enjoyin' not getting abducted by aliens again for awhile."

"Luckily I missed that because I was a bird," she said. "I hate that I can have conversations like this now."

"I'd say you get used to it, but as soon as you do this place'll throw somethin' new at you. You ever teach before?"

"Nope. Not unless showing the new guy in the ER how to put in an IV counts," Claire said. "But considering they don't ask for credentials here, I'm assuming it's not too hard."

At least, not too hard here.

"This place seems to prefer folks learn by doing," Eliot said. "But no, it's not too hard at all."

Of course, Eliot was something of a natural at it, so.

"Good to know," she nodded. Especially since she had to go on Monday, before she could hear how everyone else's classes went. "What are you teaching this time?"

"Teambuildin', with my partners." Eliot nodded to wherever Hardison and Parker had managed to end up. "I may be doin' as much reigning them in as teachin' the actual kids. You?"

"Health. I figured if the town is this nuts the kids should probably be informed in a lot of stuff," Claire reasoned.

"Not to mention teenagers in general ain't exactly the best at that sort of thing."
