Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Everyone might have been getting ready for the fall semester, but it was definitely still summertime in Fandom. The temperature was high, the wind was low, and it was only going to get hotter once everyone arrived.

There were chairs and tables set out around the lawn, some in shady spots and some out in the sun, and there was a long table of moddable food culminating in a table full of ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sorbet choices. There were also stacks of nametags for people to label themselves with, and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything in order, it was time to welcome some new people!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

A simple class with a small handful of students this semester seemed more or less to be Jono's speed. He was actually looking like he was in a fairly good mood today, leaning back against the side of a picnic table and overlooking the proceedings.

Lord, how long had it been since he was that new kid, trying to avoid conversation with... everyone?

He wasn't going to admit it sort of made him feel old, no.

"Bring back memories?" Didi asked, once she spotted Jono. "I'm not sure you took off your Walkman when it was our turn, a couple of lifetimes ago."

"And letting people know you might want to talk to them is way too close to caring," Didi said easily. "And hello to you, too. It's pretty much perfect, isn't it? Not as hot as it's been, but you can still tell it's summer. This might be my favorite kind of day."

Every kind of day was her favorite kind of day.

"I joined up," Didi confirmed with a slight smile. "Philosophy of Loss. It seemed like a good way to get people in one place and talk about stuff, you know?"

"I hope it works, and it's a long time to December," Didi told him. "I'd let you come in and talk some week, if you wanted."

Not quite the same thing as lurking, but it'd probably be much less distracting.

"What about you? You're teaching with Hannibal again, I saw."

Smaller lot of students to keep track of, though I suppose that's just a sign that there aren't as many creatives among the student body as I remember.//

It was okay, Parker. Jono knew plenty of abrupt people. It was kind of endearing, with most of said persons, anyway.

"Yup," Parker almost chirped. This was the chocolate talking, to some extent. "With my boyfriends. Instead of just one of them. Teamwork!" And punch the air! "We're teaching that. What about you?"

Oh, lord, her enthusiasm was delightful, wasn't it?

//Inspiration,// Jono replied, amused. //Which is mostly just a fancy way of saying we're going on field trips with some arts and crafts time thrown in for good measure. And I'll be teaching it with my partner, actually. Seems like a good arrangement all around.//

"Who's your partner?" Parker paused and added, "Eliot and Hardison are my boyfriends. I don't remember if I told you. But they get mentioned on the Radio a lot."

So do you, Parker, just not as much as you would if you weren't sneakily hiding in air ducts.

"Oh him!" Psychiatrist guy with the food. And the little sister. Whose wallet she'd stolen and given back. (Lecter, not his sister.) "He's cool. For a psychiatrist type. So you're taking them off-island?" Parker mused for a moment. "We did a lot of that this summer, but with Hardison teaching with us, it'll probably be more Danger Shop thingies now." Which he loved, so why thwart that.

He smiled and came to lean by Jono, drinking a cucumber, mint, and basil soda. "How are the new people looking so far?"

Hannibal raised an eyebrow at the boy already drinking. "We should probably keep him away from Edward," he said wryly.

He smiled at Jono. "We should take our students somewhere they'll be in the minority this term. It could be enlightening as well as inspiring."

At least it's a small enough class we can figure out something, even if it's just a matter of shoving them at a little culture shock for an hour.//
