Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Everyone might have been getting ready for the fall semester, but it was definitely still summertime in Fandom. The temperature was high, the wind was low, and it was only going to get hotter once everyone arrived.

There were chairs and tables set out around the lawn, some in shady spots and some out in the sun, and there was a long table of ~~moddable~~ food culminating in a table full of ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sorbet choices. There were also stacks of nametags for people to label themselves with, and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything in order, it was time to welcome some new people!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

//I wasn't going to be the one to say it,// Jono replied, wryly. //But yes, the new lot, for the most part, at least looks human. And relatively normal besides.//

A beat as he glanced across the lawn at one of the new faces.

//If with a slight tendency towards alcoholism.//

'Slight.'

Hannibal raised an eyebrow at the boy already drinking. "We should probably keep him away from Edward," he said wryly.

He smiled at Jono. "We should take our students somewhere they'll be in the minority this term. It could be enlightening as well as inspiring."

//Could be,// Jono agreed, thoughtfully. //Though I'd argue that around here, there really aren't many people who are in the majority for one reason or another, either. At least it's a small enough class we can figure out something, even if it's just a matter of shoving them at a little culture shock for an hour.//

Hannibal shrugged. "Someplace where human-seeming beings are in the minority. Someplace they can't pass as local."

//A language barrier might do that,// Jono noted, thoughtfully. //Though I imagine picking an appropriate destination otherwise will have to wait at least until we know the new ones in our class a little better. We have a couple of unfamiliar names on our roster.//

"True." Hannibal nodded. "I'm quite looking forward to it, though. Even if it does seem rather an excuse to visit wherever we like."

See Jonothon? See how innocent he looked?

//You mean it isn't?//

Well, he'd been fooled all this time, then.

Hannibal laughed. "Of course not. It's also an excuse to bring our students there. And to draw and compose."

//Ah, right,// Jono replied, amused. //The 'having been inspired, presumably people are going to do things now' portion of the class. I always forget that one.//

No, he didn't. He loved it.

"Do you?" Hannibal asked. "And yet I'm certain I've heard a few of your compositions starting there."

//Perhaps one or two,// Jono replied, smiling. //I mean, I wouldn't want to put that chunk of time at the end of class to waste, would I?//

"Of course not," Hannibal answered gravely. "That would be terribly irresponsible."

//And we do so want to set good examples for the children, don't we?//

Jono said to the man who had let one of them try the Gargle Blasters a couple of weeks ago.

To be fair, Hannibal hadn't done that by example. "At least most of the time," he agreed.
