Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Everyone might have been getting ready for the fall semester, but it was definitely still summertime in Fandom. The temperature was high, the wind was low, and it was only going to get hotter once everyone arrived.

There were chairs and tables set out around the lawn, some in shady spots and some out in the sun, and there was a long table of moddable food culminating in a table full of ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sorbet choices. There were also stacks of nametags for people to label themselves with, and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything in order, it was time to welcome some new people!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"I hope it works, and it's a long time to December," Didi told him. "I'd let you come in and talk some week, if you wanted."

Not quite the same thing as lurking, but it'd probably be much less distracting.

"What about you? You're teaching with Hannibal again, I saw."

Much less distracting, true!

//I might be persuaded to step in at some point to chat with the students,// Jono replied, before nodding a little. //And Hannibal and I enjoyed last semester's inspiration class so much, we decided to give it another go. Smaller lot of students to keep track of, though I suppose that's just a sign that there aren't as many creatives among the student body as I remember.//

"Plus, it's a smaller school now," Didi said. "There probably aren't as many of anything as we remember."

//True enough,// Jono allowed. //I remember when I was new to the island, and it seemed like at least half the people here were telepaths. Now I think we're down to... one, maybe two that I know of, anyway, besides myself. The island's population has shifted so drastically since then. Makes me wonder why that is.//

"Hmmm," Didi said. "I don't know. I can guess, though. Do you want the boring answer or the woo-woo one?"

//How about both? Woo-woo answer first?//

Sometimes, even Jono needed a little woo-woo in his life.

"Woo-woo, I think the island calls the people who nit needs, and who need it," Didi said. "It's nourished itself with our energy for years and years now. Maybe it's not as hungry anymore."

"Non woo-woo" -- she smiled at the absurdity of the way that sounded -- "would be that probably the board cut the advertising budget."

//... Not sure how I feel about the island nourishing itself with my energy,// Jono mused. //But at this point, nothing would surprise me. Maybe I'll cling to the non woo-woo answer for a while, anyway.//

A beat.

//And, not that it was a terribly deep and meaningful term before, but the more we say, 'woo-woo,' the more it feels like we're just making nonsense-words.//

"I like nonsense words," Didi informed him. "Woo-woo's a good one. Also supercalifragelisticexpialidocious."
furnaceface: (Happy!)

//Exactly the sort of word to say if you run into a frumious bandersnatch, I imagine. Perfectly cromulent words, the lot of them.//

... Didi was good at bringing out Jono's sillies.
