Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were tables and chairs set up all around the lawn. Some were in the sun, where folks could soak up that precious vitamin D, and some were in the shade where folks could stay cool.

All of the tables had at least a little glitter on them though. It was a welcoming gesture to get glitter someplace you didn't know glitter could go!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Thorin gave the glitter a speculative poke with his finger before determining that it held no value and was not, in fact, a precious metal of any variety.

Men were so strange.

He was just going to look surly and short next to it, waiting for this to be some sort of very elaborate joke played upon him by his siblings.

"It's just glitter," Rapunzel confided, spotting the grumpy-looking boy appraising the stuff. "They throw it on everything here, but it won't hurt you or anything."
dwarvenswagger: (go on)

He lived to grump about the fake metals! Lived for it!

"It's not real," Thorin replied. "I expected to find silver dust."

Like that explained it.

"Oh, wow, that'd be neat if it was," Rapunzel replied, eyes going even wider than usual. "But I think it's some kind of -- weird modern material, actually. They have this stuff called plastic that they make here? Pretty much everything's made out of it, and I'm pretty sure glitter falls under that."

He was dressed kind of like how boys at home dressed (according to books, anyway.) She was just going to guess he wasn't overly familiar with synthetic materials, yet.

"So, um, don't eat it, if you can help it. Kind of weird that they put it on the tables like that...."
dwarvenswagger: (the hell is that?)

Thorin wrinkled his nose at the idea of such materials. But remembered his manners quickly enough.

"Thorin, son of Thrain," he said, with a little bow. "At your service."

"Oh!" Yup, still not used to people bowing. At all. But Rapunzel figured out a solution pretty quickly, and dropped into a little attempt at a curtsy. "Um, Rapunzel. Daughter of...uh. Gothel. It's wonderful to meet you, Thorin."

There. Handled totally gracefully.

"You're new today, huh? Just a guess."

"You'd be correct," he replied, mildly amused by her behavior. He didn't have much interaction with girls beyond his sister. Perhaps this was how they were when not impossibly annoying younger siblings?

"It's nice here," she assured him sincerely, smiling. "I mean, everyone's really nice and the classes are all small so you get to know people, and I mean, yeah they put glitter on everything, and yeah sometimes scary things happen, but for the most part it's a really nice place, here. Where're you from?"

That was a lot of words, Rapunzel. Calm down.

Thorin was suitably impressed that she hadn't passed out from lack of air, yes.

"Erebor," He replied. "The Lonely Mountain."

That totally helped, right?

"Er, hello," Anders said curiously. Cassandra had mentioned the dwarf, and it made him want to at least say hello to the person who could possibly be from his world. "How was your journey in?"
dwarvenswagger: (say what)

"Abrupt and unwelcome," Thorin replied, turning to see just who was speaking to him. No, didn't recognize him. But then... men.

"Thorin, son of Thrain," he added with a little bow. "At your service."

All those humans looked alike, right?

"I'm Anders," he said. "Son of ... no one in particular. And it seems like a lot of us got the portal journey here. Don't worry, you get used to it."

Yes. A little. Look, he didn't have a problem with men. One of his best friends was... well, a dwarf. But shut up.

"I should hope not," Thorin replied with a sigh. "Though I suppose it better than stumbling across a city of elves."

Yes, Thorin in Lothlórien. That would be a hilarious disaster.

"Don't say that too loudly," Anders said. "You never know when someone's going to take offense."

"Anyhow," he added, "the elves I've known have been fine people."
dwarvenswagger: (oh is that so)

"You are not a dwarf." Long lasting enmity based on some stolen shiny things up in this hizzle. "The relationship is hardly the same."

"I didn't know dwarves and elves had any special dislike," Anders admitted. "But the part of Ferelden where I grew up wasn't exactly crawling with either."

"Is that near Rohan?" Because for the life of him, he couldn't recall. Men had their own names for places. And the elves had their own names. And the dwarves had their own as well. It got confusing.

"The food is better," Kaylin said, wandering past with a plate far past overfull. And please don't check her pockets. "The glittery stuff... bleah. And it seems to get all over everything here."

"The food? It's incredible. Not as good as Dr. Lecter's, of course, but better than pretty much anything we have back home." The right thing to do was to offer her hand to shake, but it was going to take her a moment to shuffle everything around.

"I'm guessing you're new. Don't worry, it's not as bad as it may seem."

That was Kaylin, just a cheerful ball of sunshine.

Thorin looked down at the hand, grasping her forearm instead of it. Because that was more what he was used to.

"Thorin, son of Thrain. At your service."

For a moment she thought she might need to drop her food and go for her daggers, but then she realized what he was doing and grasped his forearm as well. "Kaylin, daughter of... my mother?"

And shook her head. "Kaylin. Of the Hawks. At yours."

That was better.

"We protect the citizens of Elantra - the place I am from."

All right, all right, so she wasn't exactly a Hawk yet, but she would be! She trained with them and walked the beat and all that, so that had to count for something, right?

Another city of men, Thorin had to assume. "A soldier then?"
