Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were tables and chairs set up all around the lawn. Some were in the sun, where folks could soak up that precious vitamin D, and some were in the shade where folks could stay cool.

All of the tables had at least a little glitter on them though. It was a welcoming gesture to get glitter someplace you didn't know glitter could go!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Thorin wrinkled his nose at the idea of such materials. But remembered his manners quickly enough.

"Thorin, son of Thrain," he said, with a little bow. "At your service."

"Oh!" Yup, still not used to people bowing. At all. But Rapunzel figured out a solution pretty quickly, and dropped into a little attempt at a curtsy. "Um, Rapunzel. Daughter of...uh. Gothel. It's wonderful to meet you, Thorin."

There. Handled totally gracefully.

"You're new today, huh? Just a guess."

"You'd be correct," he replied, mildly amused by her behavior. He didn't have much interaction with girls beyond his sister. Perhaps this was how they were when not impossibly annoying younger siblings?

"It's nice here," she assured him sincerely, smiling. "I mean, everyone's really nice and the classes are all small so you get to know people, and I mean, yeah they put glitter on everything, and yeah sometimes scary things happen, but for the most part it's a really nice place, here. Where're you from?"

That was a lot of words, Rapunzel. Calm down.

Thorin was suitably impressed that she hadn't passed out from lack of air, yes.

"Erebor," He replied. "The Lonely Mountain."

That totally helped, right?

"Ohhhh." Rapunzel looked suitably impressed for a moment before saying, "I don't know where that is. But that's okay. Most people here probably aren't going to. Just to warn you. It sounds...quiet, though!"
dwarvenswagger: (not sure if want)

Say what?

"...it is one of the great Dwarven kingdoms."

"Oh, neat! Are you like, a Dwarf king, then?" Look at her using her context clues. "But yeah, sorry, haven't heard of it. That kind of happens here. We're all from all over. Like, I'm from Corona, and I've only met a couple of girls who've heard of it 'cause they're from the next kingdom over. It's okay. You get used to it. It's just something that makes you special here!"

"Prince," Thorin replied, taken aback by what she was saying. "This is a strange land indeed."

"Oh, yeah, it's super weird here," Rapunzel agreed cheerily. "This place is called Maryland, apparently? Like, the state Fandom's part of. There's like, a hundred states or something that make up this whole country. It's pretty interesting, if -- you know, kind of disorienting."

Pause.

"Sorry about that part. It gets better!"
dwarvenswagger: (thinking about it)

"Mary. Land." Of course. "Will they be teaching these things?"

"Depends on what you sign up for," Rapunzel mused. "The classes here aren't usually great with stuff like geography. Like last term I took a class on problem-solving where I had to rappel off stuff with my hair a lot."

Like you do.

Thorin signed up for nothing. Poor Thorin. He got what was given to him.

"It is nice hair," Thorin had to admit. Because dwarves = super into hair braiding.

"Thanks!" Rapunzel said, twirling a bit of it around a finger. "So like, do you have magic and stuff where you're from? Because that's a thing here. Just warning."

Speaking of her hair and all.
dwarvenswagger: (talking at you)

"I know of two wizards of note," Thorin replied. "And the elves have their strange sorcery."

Because dwarves only did magic with metal and stone, thank you very much.

"You know elves?" Rapunzel asked, clearly excited by this. "Oh my gosh. Like, are they the kind that live in trees and make cookies? Or do they live with Santa?"

She had very limited elf exposure.
dwarvenswagger: (go on)

"They live in trees." He thought. He'd never actually seen one of their cities, so. Yes. Trees it was. "Who is... Santa?"
