Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were tables and chairs set up all around the lawn. Some were in the sun, where folks could soak up that precious vitamin D, and some were in the shade where folks could stay cool.

All of the tables had at least a little glitter on them though. It was a welcoming gesture to get glitter someplace you didn't know glitter could go!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

For her part, Kathy was glad it was finally warming up. She and the East Coast had very different ideas of what spring meant, at least temperature-wise. Sighing a little at the layer of glitter over everything, she filled her plate with food (the first time of many no doubt) and made sure to give a friendly smile and wave to everyone she saw, newbies and old students alike.

So when Dipper thought he saw a pretty girl wave at him his immediate reaction was to turn his head around to see who was standing behind him because that's usually what happened to him back at school. If he didn't turn around and wave back that was usually when a jock would laugh and shove him against a locker and the pretty girl would laugh and all sorts of embarrassment would occur.

However the only thing behind him was Gompers the goat chewing on some grass.

Okay. Maybe she was waving at the goat.

In fairness, Kathy had waved at the goat, too, just in case it was also a student. She was past taking things for granted these days. But she'd also been waving at the new kid, so there was that.

"Hi," she said, making it clear her smile and waving were for him by following it up with conversation. "Welcome to Fandom! Hi, I'm Kathy, and I promise that feeling of 'this place is so weird' never really fades. Goes quiescent sometimes, but then it always returns with a vengeance."

"Oh. Good," Dipper Said wondering if that was truly good thing or not. "I fell down a hole this morning so I'm not sure how weird this place is going to get."

"...Is that how you ended up here?" Kathy checked. "Because if your baseline level of weird is just you falling into a regular hole, I might be a little worried about you."

She didn't want to make the kid nervous or anything, but in Fandom it paid to be prepared.

"Actually my baseline is pretty high usually," Dipper admitted. "But yes, that's how my sister and I arrived here this morning. I guess it's not weird for kids to show up here and not know they're coming here? Still adjusting to that. Oh. Sorry. I'm Dipper."

"Then you're in a lot better shape than I was when I first showed up," Kathy assured him, not even blinking at the name Dipper. Around here that was almost normal. "Even though my world has superheroes, I wasn't prepared for talking ponies or reporter squirrels or random future kids showing up and calling me Mom the weekend after prom, you know?"

"Well I can see why... Did you say you have superheroes? Like Ratman?"

"You're a Ratman fan?" Kathy asked, grinning and pointing down to her Revengers leggings. Comic versions of the Revengers because as fun as the movies were, she was a comics girl at heart.

"But to answer your question, yeah. Kinda like Ratman. When they first started showing up, people thought they were media tie-ins and publicity stunts. In LA alone, there's the Mighty Dragon, Regenerator, Gorgon, sometimes Banzai, though she's mostly East Coast right now--" that was her hiding a smile, yes. "A couple of others. Awesome Ape is in Chicago. Some guy made out of electricity's up in Boston, I think. It's all really cool."

"So how'd things go with your little?" Anders asked, with a smile and a wave back at Kathy. "Mine's the girl with the bunny."

"Mine is...decidedly unfazed by most of what I had to say," Kathy said. "Except for the part about how she's in America, not France."

She looked around for Anders' 'little' (and what a great way of putting it that was! She was going to start using that immediately) and smiled. "Okay, yours is adorable."

"Oh, France is the one where they speak Orlesian, isn't it?" Anders said, sounding rather proud of himself for having put that together. "What's it got to do with us? Why would we be there?"

He smiled toward Alluka. "She is. Watch out for her, will you? She seems young for fourteen."

"I promise," Kathy said, giving Anders a warm smile, both for his concern for his little and his trust that she'd do right by her. "As far as I know, though, France is where they speak French, since I have no idea what Orlesian is. But, in fairness to her, this is a rather famous French island. In most versions of this reality, it's called Mont St. Michel and it doesn't exist in the Chesapeake Bay."

Anders smiled back. "Oh, you know. It's the one that sounds like" -- he switched into a not-very-good French-sounding accent -- "'Bonjour, wee-wee, embrasse-moi.' Doesn't make any sense why my Orlesian is the same as your French, but it doesn't make any sense why my Common is the same as your English, either."

To the point about the island, he added, "And that's interesting. Somehow it never came up before."

"That's French," Kathy said, shaking her head. His French was probably better than hers, considering she had Spanish and Italian swirling in her head to muck up her pronunciation. "Now I'm wondering if all the languages in your world map over to ones in mine. What other languages do you know?"

"None," Anders told her, shrugging. "I can call you a brat in Anders or tell you to stop cheating at cards in Elvhen if you want, but I don't even really speak Orlesian. Cassandra'd be better to ask. She's posh."

"I always assumed the word for brat in Anders was just 'Anders'," she teased. "Or is that like having a hundred words for snow?"

Oh good. TA! "Kathy. Which person here is Raven Darkholme?" Asking for a friend!

"Hi Ms. Parker!" Kathy said, turning around to give Parker a smile. "Raven? She's right..." She scanned the crowds, looking to see if she could spot her friend. Giving Parker a rough description wouldn't work so well if Raven was currently trolling someone with her abilities. Heck, she might not be able to recognize her, if that was the case.

Fortunately, it wasn't, at least not at this moment. "That's her," she said, pointing. "She's a friend of mine. What's up?"

"What do you know about her?" Parker asked, bouncing on her toes a bit. Blonde, pretty, yes, she did remember her from the Town Hall meeting right. "She's going to be my boyfriend's TA this semester. And he could use the help, he's super-nervous right now."

"Aww, Mr. Hardison's nervous?" Kathy asked. "But he seemed really nice! I'm sure he'll be fine!"

As for what to say about Raven...There were certain things that Kathy wasn't going to mention, simply because outing her friend had powers would be rude. "She's a rising senior like me, and she's from the 1950s originally. There's some time travel involved. But--oh! She's not, like, your typical kid from the 50s," she added tactfully, realizing that Mr. Hardison might be even more nervous hearing that his TA was from before the Civil Rights Movement. "She's very big into stuff like equality and feminism and stuff. She's really cool."

"He hasn't really taught before. Not in a classroom type thing." Off and on for various cons, one on one, sure. But not with a lot of people staring at him. "Oh good. Social justice? She's okay with that? She already knows about computers and stuff?" Hardison would be hugely relieved if that was the case. "She'll help if he gets frazzled? He goes off on tangents about why you shouldn't do stuff when people tease him too hard. And he is really nice, the coolest guy I know. Except maybe Eliot." Parker beamed at the chance to brag on him. Both hims. "And the smartest. He just gets high-strung."

Awww! Ms. Parker was so clearly into her guys and it was so cute!

"I'm not sure how much she knows about computers, but she's definitely into social justice." Mutant rights fit handily under than general umbrella, yes. "I know he older brother is some kind of genius, too? So she's probably used to dealing with those types. I can talk to her if you want? Or introduce you two? Or something?"

If Ms. Parker wanted her help in getting Mr. Hardison settled, Kathy was only too happy to oblige.

"That would be great," Parker agreed, looking relieved. "He's mostly afraid the students won't listen to him or something. I told him I'd show up and give them Detentions if he wanted, but I think he'd like it if it didn't get to that point."

"If you show up and give people detention for not listening to him, won't that just undermine his authority even more?" Kathy asked. "It'll look like he needs you to fight his battles for him, won't it?"
