Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were tables and chairs set up all around the lawn. Some were in the sun, where folks could soak up that precious vitamin D, and some were in the shade where folks could stay cool.

All of the tables had at least a little glitter on them though. It was a welcoming gesture to get glitter someplace you didn't know glitter could go!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"I promise," Kathy said, giving Anders a warm smile, both for his concern for his little and his trust that she'd do right by her. "As far as I know, though, France is where they speak French, since I have no idea what Orlesian is. But, in fairness to her, this is a rather famous French island. In most versions of this reality, it's called Mont St. Michel and it doesn't exist in the Chesapeake Bay."

Anders smiled back. "Oh, you know. It's the one that sounds like" -- he switched into a not-very-good French-sounding accent -- "'Bonjour, wee-wee, embrasse-moi.' Doesn't make any sense why my Orlesian is the same as your French, but it doesn't make any sense why my Common is the same as your English, either."

To the point about the island, he added, "And that's interesting. Somehow it never came up before."

"That's French," Kathy said, shaking her head. His French was probably better than hers, considering she had Spanish and Italian swirling in her head to muck up her pronunciation. "Now I'm wondering if all the languages in your world map over to ones in mine. What other languages do you know?"

"None," Anders told her, shrugging. "I can call you a brat in Anders or tell you to stop cheating at cards in Elvhen if you want, but I don't even really speak Orlesian. Cassandra'd be better to ask. She's posh."

"I always assumed the word for brat in Anders was just 'Anders'," she teased. "Or is that like having a hundred words for snow?"

Anders snorted an amused laugh. "Well, now the word is Anders," he said. "But they had to have something else to say before I was born, you know."

"And here I just assumed it was the dominant cultural trait of your people," Kathy said. "Learning something new!"

How had she gone sixteen years without being able to banter like this?

Anders made a face at her.

"And what is 'kathyli' in Korean?" he asked. "'Sasses her friends'?"

He was liking the banter a lot.

"The proper Hangul translation comes out to something along the lines of 'very charming with a side of adorable'," she explained. "It's a rather sophisticated concept, I can't blame you for not getting it right away."

Yeah, she was keeping the banter forever. And probably Anders, too. No going back to Thedas for him. He had to stay and be her bestie forever. uwu

"Mmm, no, don't think so," Anders said. "It's more like 'flatters herself, and also smells like wet druffalo.'"

uwu was going to appear at least once on every page of his manifestos and Anders knew it.

"And 'Anders' is about to become a cautionary tale for all future mages who let their mouths write checks their butts can't cash!" Kathy said, cracking up over that. "What the heck is a druffalo anyway?"

So she'd know how mad to be, of course!

He'd intersperse uwu with the ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. emoticon, and take Thedas by storm!

"Why would my butt cash a check?" Anders asked, also laughing because the expression was new to him. "And it's a shaggy cow. Like one of your buffalos but smaller and tame."

Chantry boards would become the new Tumblr.

"I'm gonna knock you on the ground for that," Kathy threatened, holding up her fists. She looked super-threatening, absolutely. "And you don't have a saying like that in Thedas? Pffft. And you call yourselves civilized."

"We barely have banks -- at least not for commoners," Anders shrugged. "I've never written a check in my life. And -- be happy I've learned my lesson about saying 'try me,'"

"Yeah, checks are getting progressively rarer in this day and age, too," Kathy said. "In the future it'll probably be something like, 'You let your mouth apply for a credit card your butt couldn't make the minimum payments on' or something like that."

Not that that was a mouthful or anything.

"And why should I be happy you learned that lesson? If I kicked your butt during the picnic, all the newbies would know better than to mess with me." Because that was a concern, absolutely.
