Detention, 02/11

The Danger Room is set up to look like an ordinary classroom today, with slightly squeaky desks arranged in a semicircle, alphabets of many nations bordering the walls, and a flag hanging above the blackboard at the front of the room. The air smells, although not unpleasantly, of chalkdust and stale cafeteria food. In a room off to the side that resembles a formal Victorian dining room, there are a table, chairs and a sideboard from which students will take their lunch, though no food is visible at first.

The names of the students with detention are written on the chalkboard in Dream's flowing hand. He crosses each name off as the student enters:

Hamlet Dane, Jr.
Lily Evans
Janet Fraiser
Yuffie Kisagari
Nadia Santos
Kristy Thomas

Dream stands before the assembled students in his formal robes.

"Hello. I trust you all know why you are here.

I have been asked to furnish activities, and have done so. Likewise your lunch will be provided. Should all go well, I anticipate releasing you well in time for your evening meal. Should all not go well, you may learn what imprisonment truly is."

"Now, sign in and begin your assigned activities."

At 12:30 p.m. FHT, Dream briefly enters the lunchroom. When he leaves, a banquet has been arranged. Students may now eat, should they want to.

At 7 p.m. FHT, he rouses the sleepers and sends all of the students out the door.

[OOC note: Dream-mun has left the building for the night. I'll try to wrap these threads tomorrow. Also, minimal/handwaved participation on some activities is fine for those of you who might sign in late.]

I'm short, have red hair, a tendency to backtalk--apparently--and a newly-discovered penchant for ancient languages. Though I'm going to attend medical school. And tonight, I will play Monopoly.

My name is John Crichton. I live on the second floor and like math and physics. To get into detention, I decided playing the mimic game with one of my professors would be a good idea. It was not. As for feeling remorse, I’m not sure yet. We shall see.

My Name is Hamlet Dane Jr, although seeing as I have had a class with you last semester, and another class with you this one, I am unsure how much additional introduction you need. I was named after my late Father. I room with a cheerful robot-flying space terrorist and a pink robotic kleptomaniac rabbit. I am told that I was sent here today due to a run of absences. I am not especially remorseful for that, as I was quite ill for a week and would have been more of a hindrance than an asset had I attempted to go to class while sick.

Oh, hell. Janet never took Languages of Europe, and anything she's overheard from Liz has been Russian. Though Daniel has a thing for French, so she picks that in the hopes of the handful of words he's used around her has sunk in.

Which, of course, they haven't.

Janet spends a very frustrating time trying to conjugate French verbs based on half-remembered phrasing. Thank goodness they covered Latin last semester--and that she's had a lot of background in it. She barely manages to get two sets of verbs correct, completely messes up an irregular verb she'd picked without realizing it was irregular, and gets at least half of the last verb conjugations wrong.

John grimaces. He's barely fluent in the English language.

John picks the Spanish language because he's seen Spanish spoken, heard it before and might be able to cobble something together.

Of course, he'd thought it'd be easy but the Spanish language has all kinds of accent marks and odd looking words. John starts conjugating and starts out okay. The verb isn't irregular but he keeps spelling things wrong. He's chosen vivir which, he thinks, means living and starts slowly writing out the conjugation. I live, we live, you live, I lived, I am living, we are living, we have lived.

It all turns out quite badly. He gets a few right but spells the conjugated verbs wrong several times, forgets accent marks and writes video instead of vivir once.

It takes Nadia all of about thirty seconds to finish this one, since Spanish is actually her first language. If this were for an actual class, she might have picked French or German to give herself a challenge, but it was detention, one she hadn't even earned, so she was going to do as little work as she could get away with.

Of course, her first language is an Argentinian dialect of Spanish, so she might not have gotten all the verbs right.

*Hamlet cheers up a little bit when he sees the first detention activity, having taken Dream's Languages of Europe class last semester and gotten a pretty good mark in in. While Horatio would have encouraged him to pick German as a challenge, he decides on the French to finish quicker.*

Je suis, tu es, il est,... I am, thou art, he is,...

*He smiles to himself. Yep, just like a test last semester.*

Je tue, tu tues, il tue,... I kill, thou killest, he kills,...

*Halfway through, he starts wondering if he needed to provide the feminine version of some of these too. Ah well, too late for that.*

Je meurs, tu meurs, il meurt,... I die, thou diest, he dies,..."

*And an irregular one.*

Il pleut. It rains.

*He finished up with a sigh of relief. Some of the spellings are off in the plural conjugations, but for the most part, things are pretty good.*

Lunchtime

Dream has set out a buffet of an odd assortment of fooods -- Peking duck, nachos, croissants, pomegranate juice, grape-flavored and vanilla cream soda, Samosas, macaroni salad, exquisite raspberries and more. Eat, and chat, as you wish.

*Hamlet grabs a bunch if things from the international smorgasbord and sits down to eat. He's still tired from being up so late for last night's kissey-fest, and sore from sleeping on a common room couch, so he doesn't even check the food for poisons or other things before eating, but just dives right in. It's all really good -- especially the Peking duck -- but it leaves a bit of a funny aftertaste.*

At the back of the room, there is a long table covered with every art supply imaginable -- clay, beads, paints, paper, wood, foil, glitter, glue and more. Make something that you remember from a dream you have had.

You may speak during this activity as long as you are quiet and respectful of the series of events that brought you here today.

John eyes the supplies and tries to remember something from a dream he had. Recently, his dreams have been pretty mundane and bland but before...

Before the image can leave his mind, John starts creating. He grabs a sheet of paper and starts roughly, and I mean roughly, sketching an image that might look like him except thinner, with two oddly shaped arms and mismatched feet.

Then, he draws a pair of pants, a vest, a short jacket, a bow tie, and a top hat on the figure of himself. Using a marker, he colors the pants, vest, top hat, and jacket black. The bow tie is colored yellow which substitutes for gold. He uses a long thin piece of clay and puts it in drawn!John's hand for use as a baton.

Then, he lightly spreads glue on the clothing of drawn!John and sprinkles glitter on the glue so it will stick. Finally, it's finished.

"It's me as the ringleader of a circus. I had that dream many times when I first got here."

Activity the fourth -- Creature

Select an Earth animal who you feel might be an appopriate being for students to study in Creature languages. Research its nature and culture, then write 100 words describing them.

John chooses meerkats because he really can't resist and he wants to know exactly what he was turned into.

The meerkat is a small mammal and a member of the mongoose family. It’s native to the Kalahari Desert in Southern Africa. They are small animals, weighing between seven hundred and seven hundred fifty grams. They mainly eat insects but will, on occasion, eat lizards, snakes, spiders, plants, eggs and other small mammals. Meerkats are burrowing animals that live in large underground networks. They’re also social animals who live in colonies of up to forty. They are also altruistic animals, watching out for one another. One meerkat stands sentry and, when a predator is spotted, warns others in his colony.

"Lie down," Dream commands, gesturing Nadia and John to two small cots in the lunchroom that had gone unnoticed most of the day, or that have possibly just appeared.

His dark eyes flash with anger.

Janet was staring at her paper, trying to decide what creature to write about for Creature Languages, when the less then usual sleep of the past two weeks start to catch up with her. Detention is apparently relaxing. Who knew?

Despite her best efforts, she's soon dozing lightly, her head propped in one hand. Of course, she slowly slumps forward, until her head is pillowed on her arm and she starts sleeping more deeply.

She might end up sleeping a bit more heavily than usual. And there are art supplies nearby. Uh-oh.
