Detention, 02/11

The Danger Room is set up to look like an ordinary classroom today, with slightly squeaky desks arranged in a semicircle, alphabets of many nations bordering the walls, and a flag hanging above the blackboard at the front of the room. The air smells, although not unpleasantly, of chalkdust and stale cafeteria food. In a room off to the side that resembles a formal Victorian dining room, there are a table, chairs and a sideboard from which students will take their lunch, though no food is visible at first.

The names of the students with detention are written on the chalkboard in Dream's flowing hand. He crosses each name off as the student enters:

John Crichton
Hamlet Dane, Jr.
Lily Evans
Janet Fraiser
Yuffie Kisagari
Nadia Santos
Kristy Thomas

Dream stands before the assembled students in his formal robes.

"Hello. I trust you all know why you are here.

I have been asked to furnish activities, and have done so. Likewise your lunch will be provided. Should all go well, I anticipate releasing you well in time for your evening meal. Should all not go well, you may learn what imprisonment truly is."

"Now, sign in and begin your assigned activities."

At 12:30 p.m. FHT, Dream briefly enters the lunchroom. When he leaves, a banquet has been arranged. Students may now eat, should they want to.

At 7 p.m. FHT, he rouses the sleepers and sends all of the students out the door.

[OOC note: Dream-mun has left the building for the night. I'll try to wrap these threads tomorrow. Also, minimal/handwaved participation on some activities is fine for those of you who might sign in late.]

"Does it?" asked Janet. "I've gotten used to it. Mostly."

"Well," Nadia shrugged. "You start to get used to the fact that there are vampires at school, or, one, at least, and then suddenly you find out the school administration hired an evil one to teach. I mean, Angel's a pretty nice guy, so I guess I never really thought about how evil vampires are supposed to be. I knew they were, of course, but I didn't . . . think about it." Nadia shakes her head. "I'm not explaining very well."

"Angel wasn't as nice a guy when he first started here, so I think I was a little more familiar with the concept of evil vampires." Janet shuddered a bit. "He was very--reptilian, I would say. But I think I understand what you mean. Really, it's just one thing after another around here. The shocks keep building."

"I've been noticing that." Nadia tilts her head. "Why does a vampire have to go to high school, anyway?"

"You know, I've never asked," said Janet. "But the temptation to do so is kind of overwhelming now."

Nadia nodded. "Just as soon as we get out of here, anyway."

"I really hope that Professor Dream doesn't keep us until midnight," said Janet. "But at least I've learned I have no grasp whatsoever of European languages."

"He could," said Janet. "But most teachers don't. I think unless we're extraordinarily bad, we should be fine."

"I don't know a lot about America, but I'm pretty sure one of the selling points was fair punishment." Nadia frowns. "This doesn't seem like it's all that fair."

"This is high school," Janet pointed out. "And a private high school at that. They're a little different here. What was it like at your old high school?"

Nadia considers lying, but figures she's actually told enough people bits of the truth by this point that odds are good she'd get caught at it. "I've never been to high school before."

She just won't go into detail.

"Really?" asked Janet. "Were you home-schooled?" The thought of not going to school at all hasn't even entered Janet's mind. "Then Fandom High must be doubly a shock for you."

Nadia blinks, then remembers that phrase doesn't actually literally mean that Janet wants her to talk about it. "So. What are you here for?"

"I mentioned Professor Skeeter's children," said Janet. "All I did was tell her John was concerned. I was trying to explain something I'd told her about a class assignment."

"She does seem to know a lot about her subject material, at least," said Janet. She took another bite of Peking duck.
