Umbridge High School Building, Saturday Evening

There were some clouds hanging around the spires of Umbridge High School, but not enough; there was an overlaying sense that there shouldn't be as much sunlight shining down on it as there was.

It was quiet. Kind of. There was tension in the air, a wound-up strung-up thing that ensnared the school. Somehow it seemed as if even the birds didn't want to touch down on the building itself, and the gates seemed to fold into themselves, even if they weren't quite shut.

And all that on a weekend, too.

Main Office - Just Down The Hall From the Lockers

If it seemed strange that there was someone in the office on a Saturday, the sight of Momoko just sort of standing there near the doorway, staring at the empty desks, the place where she'd spent the last two years not knowing, not remembering, had to be even stranger.

Her eyes were still red -- her eyes were always red -- but anyone who'd met her during her time working for Umbridge would notice that today, they were a thousand times less cloudy. And she had a mission.

Momoko wasn't sure how this would all end, today, but she had a back-up plan. Besides leaving, that is, which is what she was going to do as soon as she was done here. That was what Priestly had wanted, and now, well, she had no reason to stay.

She walked to the file cabinets lining the wall, pulling out reports and forms and throwing them to the floor. She'd worked in administration long enough to know the value of them; if these papers didn't make it to the right people, there would be chaos. The Board would get concerned. Inspections would happen... It wasn't much, and it would be slow, but it was something she could do. A start. Or a finish, maybe?

She moved to another cabinet, then the desks. Everything had to go. Sorry Ida, sorry everyone. But this was right.

When she was done, she reached into her pocket for the matches.

"Momoko."

As soon as Karla saw her friend in the office, she stopped in her tracks. Momoko. She...couldn't face the other female now. Not after what happened to Priestly. Not after the last things she said to Priestly. Not while knowing that Momoko could still be Imperio'd.

"That's Momoko," Karla said a little louder. "She works in the office. If there's anything to be found in there, she'll probably know where it is. You might have to trick her though--I have no idea where her loyalties are right now."

Maeby thought about that for a few seconds -- which, to be fair, was a few seconds more than she usually thought about things.

"Okay," she said. "So we tell her we're pro-Umbridge, and if she's not, then we tell her we're pro-Resistance and she saw right through our cover. I mean, everyone's been pretending to be loyal anyway, right?"

Or they could make up something completely insane. That was her usual MO.

Sparkle just raised an eyebrow and cleared his throat. Little mister covered-in-scars from the quill was really not Loyalist-friendly, and generally made no move to so much as look it.

"Gimmie a second, I'll clean my face."

The kohl was not exactly to the dress code. So, spitting into the corner of his shirt and then trying to scrub it off was going to be his modus operandi for a moment, here.

"We could even try a good-cop, bad-cop routine," Frank suggested. "Stagger our entrances a little. I could go first and do the pro-Umbridge angle, and if that doesn't work, then I could slink off in disappointment and you guys could come in as the rebels?"

Oh, Frank. So useful at complicating other people's plans. IT WAS A SKILL.

There was a ruffling of feathers and then what sounded like a throat being cleared.

"She is no longer controlled," Ikol informed them in a deep voice that one might believe Loki would grow into with time. He sat perched on a locker, giving them all a deeply disappointed look.

"Oh." Karla said, blinking a bit. "Well, that's handy to know."

Though Sparkle now looked more raccoon-eyed than even before, so he might be a little huffy about the wait.

"You lot go in. I...should go make sure the protections on the locker haven't been changed any. I would hate for us to go through all this trouble and then find that it's for nothing."

That was an awesome excuse for not going in! Much better than 'I don't know if I can face Momoko yet, thanks.'

Just ignore the ominous clanking and slithering.

Karla was trying her hardest to ignore all that while once again inspecting the locker to see if anything had changed since yesterday. The spell on it seemed to be undisturbed and there was no cloying saccharine smell that suggested Umbridge had been by.

Sadly, there was still no way for her Craft to get at whatever was in there, either. Hopefully, they'd be able to get the combination out of Momoko, then. And soon. They didn't have all that long before Kitty made her move.

"We've got it," Maeby called out, as soon as she caught sight of Karla. She wasn't sprinting down the hallways like she was trying to win an Olympic medal, but she wasn't strolling, either.

".... okay, uh, the bird has it, anyway," she said.

She couldn't believe the office lady had trusted it to the bird.

That noise? Was the noise of a god turned magpie laughing at you, Maeby. Terribly sorry about that.

Ikol fluttered overhead, letting the paper fall above them once he reached Karla. "Children," he said. Because that answered everything.

"He's just sore because he doesn't have opposable thumbs," Sparkle decided, sauntering up behind Maeby, backpack slung over one shoulder and a lazy grin on his face. "We going to open this thing now, see what kind of treasure they've got buried under the X?"

... There was no X.

"Can I?" Frank said, practically bouncing. Look, this was exciting stuff! Breaking in and saving the day... it was like he was a superhero or something. He leaned in, put in the code, and...

"Is that a piece of paper?"

SERIOUSLY, UMBRIDGE? THAT WAS YOUR DEFENSE SYSTEM?

Rapunzel had planned to help. In a fight like the one going on today, lots of people were going to be hurt, and she was going to be there to do something about that. She was good at that. She couldn't fight, but she could heal.

Or she could yesterday (http://fandomtownies.livejournal.com/6503847.html?thread=247148711#t247148711).

Today? She was curled up in the school hallway, hoping no one would find her. Everyone was busy elsewhere, so it was better if she just stayed out of the way. She couldn't help anymore.

She couldn't do anything.

The voice that called to her was probably the last one Rapunzel would want to hear.

"Rapunzel?"

Re: Hallway Full of Lockers

[identity profile] leavingthenest.livejournal.com 2012-07-29 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Rapunzel didn't even recognize the voice at first. She looked up, opening her mouth to ask who it was.

Then she froze, eyes widening.

And then she scrabbled, feet sliding against the floor as she tried to get away. But she sitting against the wall, so she didn't get anywhere, despite her desperation.

"Wait, no, Rapunzel, stop!" Karla cried, hand out to stop her, though she didn't go near the other girl. "Please, stop! I'm sorry, darling, I'm so sorry about what I did to you! Mother Night--I wish I could take it back."

Re: Hallway Full of Lockers

[identity profile] leavingthenest.livejournal.com 2012-07-29 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
She didn't really hear any words, just that there were words.

And she didn't stop scrambling. Even if her desperation did ease ever so slightly when Karla stopped coming closer.

Re: Hallway Full of Lockers

[identity profile] poison-pretty.livejournal.com 2012-07-29 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Karla drew in a long, quavery breath and took a slow step backwards. "Okay now?" she asked, holding up her hands where Rapunzel could see them. "That better?"

After the breaking out with Sam, then getting into a fight with Kerrigan (http://fandomhigh.livejournal.com/3176427.html?thread=193450219#t193450219), Dinah had crawled, then limped away, trailing blood, then having to stop every dozen yards, dizzy and hurting. Sam. She'd promised they'd break out together. Where was he? "Sam..."

[identity profile] leavingthenest.livejournal.com 2012-07-29 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Rapunzel had hidden in the hall because she'd hoped that no one would come. And someone was there. She peeked through her knees, which she had pulled up against her chest, hoping that it wasn't someone who'd come to hurt her.

Only what she saw was worse.

Someone was injured. Badly injured. And she couldn't do anything about it.

Dinah slid down the wall, needing a break. Just a little break. She blinked when she caught sight of Rapunzel. New kids everywhere. "Hey. Hi. Uh. Don't freak out, okay?" What with the blood and the knife and looking straight out of Gotham. "Could use some help?"

Which made Rapunzel sniff, and swallow.

"I can't help," she said softly, sniffling again. "Not anymore."

"Why not?" Dinah asked, gritting her teeth as she tried to raise her leg. Ow, ow, ow, ow. "We busted Detention. You won't get in trouble. Swear."
