Newbie Shuttle, Portalocity Terminal, BWI (Saturday Morning Fandom Time)

After everyone was done shouting at and/or hugging him to say goodbye – and there had been a lot of both –Victor Mancha had two choices in getting from Los Angeles to BWI. The first was taking a commercial flight, which would have been reassuringly normal.

The problem was that, even if he somehow got past the metal detectors, he suspected his circuitry might count as the kind of portable electronic device that wasn’t very takeoff-and-landing-friendly. He didn’t exactly have an easy off switch, and crashing a plane by mistake seemed like a big step towards super-villainhood.

Which meant he got to the Baltimore airport via portal. He’d never been through one before so he didn’t have much to go by, but it seemed like a nice portal: If nothing else, it smelled far better than Cloak’s ... cloak had. Victor was grateful to know that hadn’t been the state-of-the-art in teleporting.

And now he was on the East Coast other than New York for the first time. Once he’d exhausted the little potential for exploration the terminal had, he sat in a semi-comfortable airport chair, suitcase at his feet, and tried to break the Tetris high score on his phone while keeping watch for any other kids.

Frank, meanwhile, was fresh off his first plane ride ever and a little winded from the experience. God, the stewardesses. The stewardesses.

Look, he was still getting over it.

From there he'd picked up his monogrammed suitcases from baggage (they were his dad's, but therein lay the number-one advantage of sharing initials), and then accepted help from airport security to point him toward the "Portalocity terminal" where he'd taken his connecting portal, and finally reached the spot where he was supposed to meet up with his new classmates for boarding school. He was more than a little wide-eyed and excited, to say the least.

"Hey!" he said, offering Victor a way-too-excited smile and trying not to bounce. "This is the waiting area for Fandom, right?"

Victor glanced up and smiled back. "Yep," he said. "You fresh meat too?"

The guy seemed all shiny, and Victor wondered if he looked that way too.

Sun. Suns? How many did this place have anyway?

Well, the place didn't smell, his feet weren't sticking to the ground every step or two, and Atton hadn't been shaken down by a nasty-faced Exchange member in the last... oh, two hours.

Yeah, this had been a good choice. All he really needed now was a place that served juma juice and somewhere to rest his head, and he'd be golden.

Atton draped himself over the seat and waited. He was in no rush, thanks. A little tired, but he could be doing a whole lot worse.

He reached into his luggage and got out a couple of pazaak cards. That was the third thing that was missing - a few good games and a few good suckers to take credits from.

"Hey," Victor said, once he'd watched Atton fooling with the cards for long enough to realize he didn't know what they were. "Sorry to bug you, but what game's that?"

Sia had reason enough to be a little paranoid, coming from where she was, so when she sensed another Force sensitive person around, she kept her distance but still watched him just in case. At least he didn't seem like a threat.

It had been about a week since Karolina had found out she was being sent across the country to boarding school. She'd been angry at first, but had simmered down since because anger wasn't an emotion she could hold on to for long. So, by now, she was just trying decide between wary and curious.

Standing in the lounge with a cap on her head and her bags at her feet, she was settling on fidgeting with her MedAlert bracelet while she watched people gather.

While she was keeping a sharp lookout for anything she might perceive as a threat, the fact that Sia wasn't finding any and was able to walk around unnoticed was encouraging. She wasn't used to portals or airports, not spaceports, but she took those things in stride and once she spotted people who looked to be her age asked, "Is this where the group to Fandom is meeting?"

Ulrik had boarded the train to Grantvillr in Magdeburg a few hours ago, and had spent most of the journey with his nose buried in one of the city's more reliable newspapers. So when he'd disembarked and found himself someplace that was... Definitely not Thuringia, well. It was a bit of a shock. Through a series of carefully worded questions, he figured out that 1) he'd somehow found himself transported up-time an 2) there was a group of students expecting transportation to a boarding school in a small lounge just down the hall. If the Ring of Fire had taught him anything, it was that god worked in mysterious ways. Perhaps there was some larger purpose to his presence here, and if that were the case, he'd probably find some answers in this Fandom place, wherever that was.

"Ah, hello?" he greeted, opening the door and stepping inside a bit tentatively.

Holmes was waiting in a strange land, surrounded by strange people. Somehow he had pictured America being... different. Perhaps it was the clothing. Perhaps it was devices that all of them seemed so enthralled with.

Perhaps it was the fact that he was in the completely wrong time.

Yes, it could have been that.

Which would be why he was pretending to sleep as he observed people. Possibly looking like a homeless person.

A flight attended wheeled a cart into the Portalocity terminal, unloaded a few pieces of luggage, and then backed out of the room very, very quickly.

"Hey! HEY COME BACK HERE! You SUCK at customer service!!!"

One of the items, a hard plastic pet carrier, started rocking and clattering noisily. "LET ME OUT OF HERE!!!"

There was a padlock on the door of the carrier that the cat inside was batting at ineffectively. Taped to the top of the carrier was an envelope that read "Combination inside -- DO NOT OPEN until you are ON Fandom Island".

George did not get stewardesses. He got two days travel by large flying lizard with Gaston. It was not a fair trade-off.

It felt like he'd dragged his trunk half-way around the airport and back, but finally, he found his way to the right terminal, and a... somewhat likely group. Though he was now even more sure than he had been that he needed to buy more Broken clothes.

He tucked his hands into his pockets and started checking out who he'd be stranded on a small island with.

The portal thing alone was enough to convince Peeta that not everything about this school was what it seemed, but standing around waiting for the shuttle cemented it. The kids milling around didn't seem to be worried about whether or not this whole thing was a Capitol trick so Peeta let himself relax a little and took to people watching.

He'd take to being more sociable once he got a hold of his bearings.

Yeah, okay. So, Sparkle didn't really know what to think about this going to school in America thing. Sure, it was supposed to keep him out of trouble. Or, well, more trouble than he could get in back in Toronto. Small towns, a more laid-back atmosphere, blah blah blah and so on.

Sparkle really didn't look all that thrilled to be here. He hadn't even been able to smuggle a pack of smokes on the plane, so he was leaning up next to the 'no smoking' sign on the wall, a cherry Twizzler sticking out of his mouth.

Close enough.

Ace, all about the subtle entrances, stumbled though the door with BOOOOOOOM! (http://upmysleeve.livejournal.com/1194.html) still ringing in her ears, smoke still wafting off her clothes, soot on the tip of her nose, hair flying everywhere, and the biggest grin you could fit on a face her size without blowing her head up like a balloon to grab a few more centimetres of dental real estate.

Who cared where she was? It wasn't Iceworld!

"Oi, you lot! Where can a girl get a packet of cheese and onion crisps around here?"

That where, she cared about.

It was a bit odd, waiting for a bus when you were a dead person. Thelma Bates had been through a small multitude of unexpected and odd things in the past year or so. Becoming a ghost was one of them, of course. Dealing with being a ghost, however, was becoming old hat. But the prospect of attending school again, that was odd. Then again, she was still rather attached to this mortal coil, and it sure as hell beat going up to the great beyond to play a harp and sing hosannas or whatever you did up in Heaven.

It wasn't as if she had any possessions to bring with her, admittedly. So instead, she was sitting there with a bag of crisps, or potato chips as they called them in America, waiting for this bus to the school. She didn't quite expect anyone to see her.

Then again, for those who couldn't, there was a bag of potato chips slowly emptying itself. That was possibly an odd sight.

Thomasina, thanks to two days of fairly intense immersion into the twenty-first century courtesy Hannah Jarvis (http://godscrankshaft.livejournal.com/1016.html), had had a fairly stress-free trip across the Atlantic, although she'd been quite disappointed that the flight attendant hadn't been able to explain the physics behind the airplane's flight. She couldn't imagine having to find her way without Hannah's assistance, though; things were completely and utterly different in so many ways -- which only made sense after two-hundred years -- and while Thomasina thought she might have been able to figure things out, given time, the pace of life itself had become much faster, as well, and she doubted she'd have had the time necessary.

She had made it across the ocean, however, and followed a helpful security guard's directions to the Portalocity terminal, where she pushed her new suitcase out of the way against the wall. As she sat down, a flash of pink caught her attention in her peripheral vision, and it took her a moment to remember the spur-of-the-moment decision to have the stylist dye it pink. She still thought she rather liked it, but it was taking some getting used to.

There were so many options in the world now; she hardly knew where to start.

Once Tinny stepped off the plane and retrieved her luggage, she headed on over to the Portalocity terminal to wait for the shuttle. She looked around at the group that had gathered already, curious and excited. Maybe a little nervous, too. She wouldn't admit that.

You'd think that the night before being sent off to some weird boarding school, Terry would have gotten the night off from being Batman. But you weren't Bruce Wayne. And so Terry made his way to the terminal carrying a stuffed backpack on one shoulder, carrying a bag in one hand, and pretty much assaulting a cup of coffee that was in his other hand.

Come to think of it, going to Fandom meant he could probably get some sleep most nights. Maybe he would enjoy himself here....

Fawn felt like a hummingbird, her heart was beating so fast. It took nearly everything she had to keep down the twitches that her body so desperately wanted to fall into. There she was standing (well, sitting, perched on top of her large steamer trunk that had been picked up at a rummage sale ages ago) on the edge of an adventure, and she wasn't sure she could even breathe. All these people...were they her new school mates? Were they kind? Mean? Would they see her for what she was or were they, like her, cast aside, sent elsewhere, on the merits of being a freak?

If she wasn't so nervous, she could see herself pulling her harmonica out of her pocket and playing soulfully for the passersby, just as she and her siblings did in the subways and bus stations back home. But her palms were too sweaty, her head buzzing, and she didn't want to draw any attention to herself. So she just sat, trying not to stare, trying to hide behind her curtain of hair and disappear. She wiped her hands on her skirt and, since she was wearing a skirt, she crossed her legs to better hide who she was, even though doing so made her yinandyango smush uncomfortably against her thighs and it hurt so bad.

She crossed her legs even tighter. So that whenever she did chance to look around, it was through the blurry lens of tears in her eyes.

Minako was dragging two suitcases and juggling a cat-carrier she staggered over to the waiting area. "Oh. My. God. That flight took FOREVER."

Artemis howled his agreement, mostly because of the way his case was banging against her knees, and he was not going to swear in front of a bunch of humans.

Anakin would never admit it, but he totally looked forward to picking up the shiny new students and driving them back to school at speeds no bus should attempt.

He swept toward the assembled group, cloak swirling around his ankles when he stopped (and yes, he'd practiced that for decades to make it look that good) and arched up an eyebrow.

"The Fandom High School shuttle is here."

There was a brief pause, then he added: "And I'm not just a bus driver."

So it bothered him to have that conversation a few times a year, okay? Sue him.
