After everyone was done shouting at and/or hugging him to say goodbye – and there had been a lot of both –Victor Mancha had two choices in getting from Los Angeles to BWI. The first was taking a commercial flight, which would have been reassuringly normal.

The problem was that, even if he somehow got past the metal detectors, he suspected his circuitry might count as the kind of portable electronic device that wasn’t very takeoff-and-landing-friendly. He didn’t exactly have an easy off switch, and crashing a plane by mistake seemed like a big step towards super-villainhood.

Which meant he got to the Baltimore airport via portal. He’d never been through one before so he didn’t have much to go by, but it seemed like a nice portal: If nothing else, it smelled far better than Cloak’s ... cloak had. Victor was grateful to know that hadn’t been the state-of-the-art in teleporting.

And now he was on the East Coast other than New York for the first time. Once he’d exhausted the little potential for exploration the terminal had, he sat in a semi-comfortable airport chair, suitcase at his feet, and tried to break the Tetris high score on his phone while keeping watch for any other kids.

"Late night at work. Couldn't swing the night off somehow," Terry said. "I'm Terry. Nice to know I didn't miss the bus."

"Figures," Victor commiserated. "The work part, not the maybe missing the bus part."

He was surprised nothing had gotten attacked before he could leave LA for Fandom.

"Where are you coming from?"

"Gotham City," Terry said. Then he remembered one of the warnings Bruce gave him. "In New York." Then the other warning. "In some worlds."

And if the other person knew what the hell he was talking about, there was a chance they knew his secret identity. "If any of that sounds insane, let's just blame sleep deprivation, okay?"

"Only part that sounds loco is that I don't know Gotham, man," Victor told him, then glanced over to Karolina. "... actually, if there are other worlds, a whole conversation I just had makes a lot more sense."

"Either way," he added, "I'm from LA, but I portalled in."

"Hey, first person I've met and I'm already being helpful," Terry said. "That's easily a new personal record."

"What brings you to school on this side of the country?"

"Stuff had gotten weird at home, and this place was free and had registration at the right time," Victor answered lightly. "What brought you down south?"

Maryland was south, right? He was from LA, he didn't know.

"My boss is an alum. He suggested it to my mom and she thought it would be a good experience," Terry said. "And since I'm missing out on my senior year back home, I'm really hoping she's right."

No, he wasn't letting go of that bitterness, even after that talk with Bruce.

"I should be a senior," Victor said, as if just realizing it. "I mean, they're calling me a junior 'cause I missed basically all last year, but I should be."

Poor, poor Victor.

"Anyhow, sorry they're tag-teaming you."

"Sounds like you have a worse break than I do," Terry said. "What happened last year? If you don't mind me asking."

"Long story," Victor said. "Short version is, my mom got killed, my dad's never really been in the picture, and I kind of fell in with this, uh, dropout gang. But a good one."

He smiled. "It's been wild."

"Yeah, your break is worse," Terry said. "But hey, as long as your dropout gang is good, I won't hold that against you."

Victor smiled. "They're great," he said genuinely. "I wanted to take off for a little, but that's ... my stuff. Not theirs."
