After everyone was done shouting at and/or hugging him to say goodbye – and there had been a lot of both –Victor Mancha had two choices in getting from Los Angeles to BWI. The first was taking a commercial flight, which would have been reassuringly normal.

The problem was that, even if he somehow got past the metal detectors, he suspected his circuitry might count as the kind of portable electronic device that wasn’t very takeoff-and-landing-friendly. He didn’t exactly have an easy off switch, and crashing a plane by mistake seemed like a big step towards super-villainhood.

Which meant he got to the Baltimore airport via portal. He’d never been through one before so he didn’t have much to go by, but it seemed like a nice portal: If nothing else, it smelled far better than Cloak’s ... cloak had. Victor was grateful to know that hadn’t been the state-of-the-art in teleporting.

And now he was on the East Coast other than New York for the first time. Once he’d exhausted the little potential for exploration the terminal had, he sat in a semi-comfortable airport chair, suitcase at his feet, and tried to break the Tetris high score on his phone while keeping watch for any other kids.

"You drive cars too, right?" Terry said instead of not saying anything.

He was tired. The coffee wasn't working yet. He could probably come up with a few more reasons for sassing a man with a cloak that swirly.

"Yes, but that wasn't the point I was trying to make," Anakin said.

"And all of you would never fit in the Prius."

""Do I get credit for the right guess anyway?" Terry checked.

"No," Anakin told him.

Anakin was a lot of fun at parties.

Wait. Swirly cape. Surly attitude. This felt strangely familiar. "It was worth a shot."

"Not really, but you're new," Anakin said. "I'm Anakin Skywalker, the Dean of Students."

"Terry McGinnis. With a foot in my mouth," Terry said, looking just a little sheepish.

Anakin waved it off. "No detentions until Monday."

Happy thought.

"Glad to hear it," Terry said. "Just curious, do you do the shuttle thing so you can get a feel for the students right away for your main job?"

Anakin nodded. "I like to make an initial assessment."

And then spend the picnic bitching about them.

"So you might not be giving me a detention now, but you know I might talk my way into trouble after Monday anyway?" Terry asked.

Anakin's lips quirked up. "Something like that. I won't be surprised to hear about you again."

"Yeah, it's probably inevitable," Terry said. "Still, I'll try to keep it down for a week or two, just to make it more convenient for you."

"Thanks," Anakin said dryly. "I'm in my office on Tuesdays."
