Welcome Dance - the Gym

The streamers and banners are up. So are a zillion multi-colored helium balloons.

The floor is cleared, and the bandstand is up at the north side of the room, ready for Dusted Bunnies to take their places.

The refreshment table, with the (as yet) unspiked punch is in place. There are chips and stuff as well, Chex mix, a few nachos and some guacamole.

Peter walked up to the punch table. No danger. Okay, punch wasn't poisoned or anything. Good to know.

So he took some. Didn't seem spiked either yet. Peter was batting 1.000.

"Nope. Been here since September." Alanna nervously toyed with an earing. "Alanna."

"Been here since last Friday," Peter said. "Here I was thinking it was impressive surviving here for a full week. Now I'm talking to someone who's survived four months and I'm in awe."

"Sorry, I tend to ramble on sometimes."

Alanna laughed. "Rambling's all right. And trust me, the first week's the worst. Made possibly worser for me cause that's when the zombies attacked."

Peter sipped his punch. "I only had a ninja. It kind of lacks the flair of a zombie horde."

"But the important thing is that we're all alive. And, hey, now there's a dance. Which, actually, I might rank with the zombie horde, come to think of it."

"Ninja?" Alanna blinked. "What's a ninja and why is everyone asking about 'em? And yeah, agreeing with the dance equals zombie horde. At least your date's not in a different world."

"Ninjas were originally stealthy warriors from Japan who got coopted by modern day popular culture because they are, in fact, awesome. I have no clue how that lead to ninjas being here, though," Peter shrugged. "Oh, and their archenemies are pirates for some reason."

"No, my date's not in a different world. She did, however, dump me via e-mail. So, really, I'm probably only doing a little better than you right now. And that's only because being from a different world is pretty impressive."

"I've survived a week!" Peter cheered. "And my life was only in danger once, too. Not too shabby, I think."

"What did you do?" Rory asked, sighing. "Kick the squid or something?"

"Um. My Secret Sibling gave me a water gun. And there was this ninja girl... Long story short, I'm alive and uninjured and there may be a ninja with a water gun around town, soon. She seemed too interested in it not to have picked up some ideas."

Peter mumbled into his drink, "I think I actually managed to make this town weirder."

"Not possible," Rory said with a gentle smirk. "I didn't know we had ninjas. Other than Anakin's roommate, I mean. Was it her? Because all I know about her is that she's big on color."

"I'm pretty sure this wasn't her. This ninja wasn't even in color. That was kinda strange, really." Peter smiled. "Hey, you know Anakin?"

Rory blushed. "Yup. We're, um, really close friends," she said, holding up slightly crossed fingers. "And she wasn't in color? Huh. I have an evil twin lurking around somewhere who's monochromatic. Maybe they're related."

Peter chose to spare Rory any questions about the sudden redness of her face. "He's my Big Brother. He seems like a nice guy."

"I hate evil twins. They're the absolute worst. Well, them and clones." As soon as he said it, Peter felt that he probably shouldn't have mentioned clones. For several reasons.

While wandering looking for John, Aeryn stops off for that punch thing, just to check. "Is it alcoholic yet?"

"Could be worse," she says, and makes a mental note that John is not going near the punch bowl in an hour. "It's already been interesting. You?"

"I've had better days, but tonight's been okay," Peter said. "I've had a few nice conversations, avoided the dance floor. You know, my dignity has been maintained up until this point. Could be so much worse, really."

"Anders? The big, jock-looking guy?" Peter shuddered. "That's an image I needed. I'm now proud that I've stayed clothed in public. I never thought I'd have to actually saw that."
