Welcome Dance - the Gym

The streamers and banners are up. So are a zillion multi-colored helium balloons.

The floor is cleared, and the bandstand is up at the north side of the room, ready for Dusted Bunnies to take their places.

The refreshment table, with the (as yet) unspiked punch is in place. There are chips and stuff as well, Chex mix, a few nachos and some guacamole.

Party on, dudes! And welcome to Fandom High.

"Like, someone who's only played Dead Chick #3 on Criminal Forensic Detectives ? That would be amusing," Rory agreed.

She sighed. "'Whorey.' Because it rhymes with Rory. And there's no real reason for it - seriously, I'm a one-guy girl - but I told Faith she could call me that to be funny."

"Exactly. And then people will just call her 'Crazy Hooker' for the rest of her career. It'll be kind of sad, but mostly funny," Peter nodded.

"Ah, okay. And Skeeter is keeping it up? What a jerk," Peter said. "Also? Whorey would imply that you're like Crazy Hooker. You don't want that."

"It would have a lovely level of schadenfreude, yeah. 'Specially if she's not a very nice person."

"Yeah, really uncool of her. Because it's not funny with her. And I'd rather no one got, y'know, that impression. Especially since I'm single and not even remotely interested in dating anyone right now," Rory said, blushing faintly. "And, yeah, bad enough I look like Crazy Hooker."

"Ah, the single life. I actually just got dumped last night. Via e-mail." Peter liked mentioning that part. That part bugged him the most. "It's not like I wasn't expecting it, really, especially since Kitty - that's my new ex - had made it pretty clear that she didn't want a relationship with this kind of distance..."

Peter stopped and sighed. "Sorry about that. You don't deserve my emo. I'm dealing for the most part, I swear. But, you know, newly dumped... Fun stuff, right?"

Rory's eyes went wide at the mention of the girl in question's name. But surely lots of people were named Kitty. Or Katherine. Or Kathy. Totally didn't mean anything.

"Oh, God, Peter. That's awful," Rory said sympathetically. "I mean, by e-mail. If it's any consolation, I once got dumped by...um, having my boyfriend skip town and not tell anyone where he was going ~~though I did get a letter in the deleted scenes, supposedly~~. So, hey. E-mail's a step up, right? And in any case, I'm a month off a different relationship as it is, so we can be emo together."

So, that was a lie. Yes, she was a month off breaking up with Logan. Not so much with the emo, though.

"Geez. It's like any bit of angst I can throw out there, you've got me beat," Peter lied. "The, err, 'bitey' thing last week, the bad dumpings this week..."

"We're going to be angst buddies, aren't we?" Peter asked. "We're just going to keep meeting up randomly and telling each other the ways in which our lives suck." He shook his head. "Can we go back to happier stuff now?"

Rory quirked a corner of her mouth in a smile. "Just trying to make you feel better with the, 'Hey, I win at emo' - ness. Happier topics, though...I like penguins. You?"

"I'm good with penguins. Cute, formal looking, walk in an amusing manner. Also, tragic. They're birds, but they can't fly. I would weep for them, but then they're all cute again," Peter rambled. "That kind of trumps everything."

"Baby penguins are fluffy," Rory noted. "This wins all."

"Baby penguins need a trophy, too," Peter said. "When we get you your trophy, we'll stop for another one for the penguins. And then send it to... Antarctica."

"Any clue what the zip code for Antarctica is?"

"Zero, zero, zero, zero, zero?" Rory guessed. "We shoulds send them tiny hats, too. Because what's cuter than a penguin in a hat?"

"A penguin playing with a kitten, maybe?" Peter suggested.

"It's too bad polar bears live on the opposite side of the world. I have this lithograph of a bear and a kitten together, and it's way cute. And it also attacks annoying people," Rory grinned.

"The bear attacks annoying people? Or the lithograph does?" Peter may have been worrying for Rory's sanity at the moment.

"Lithograph, but I'm sure the bear does too. Okay, I know it sounds crazy. But it falls over onto annoying people. And 'accidentally' whaps them and stuff. I don't do anything. And the person who gave it to me is not the kind to hit people with a lithograph," Rory said solemnly.

"That's absolutely bizarre, but I now expect nothing less from you," he smiled.

"Just make sure I stay away from the lithograph. I've been called irritating more times than I'd like to admit, so I don't want to risk it."

"I'm a normal girl from Connecticut. I swear. This school made me weird," Rory protested mildly. "And you're not annoying. And even though we all have our days, I doubt you've ever been irritating enough to warrant the bear's attention."

"I appreciate the vote of confidence, but I have annoyed a great many people. They deserved it, but still." Peter smiled broadly. "Hopefully the lithograph appreciates my hard work."

"I'm sure it does. If it's, y'know...sentient." Rory rolled her eyes, fully aware of how idiotic she sounded. "But you're not perverted or excessively emo or big on purple prose or TMI, so the lithograph probably like you."

"You'd be surprised about the emo, actually. Never visit my mind. It's a terrifying please," Peter said, more seriously than he had intended. "But the rest of it is true, I swear."

"Please, I've been talking to you for how long, and we actually managed to deflect the emo. There are people here who refuse to leave the emo alone. They walk up and are all sad and so I'm like, 'Hey, puppies?' and they're like 'WOE!' So you're totally not excessively emo," Rory smiled.

"People woe at puppies?" Peter asked, making a disgusted face.

"I just realize that if I let myself be outwardly emo, people are going to be sick of it. So I shut that up a bit ~~and put on my invisible Spidey mask~~ and turn it into wackiness. It works for me."

"Wackiness is good. I tend to write it out in my journal ~~which my player has neglected for almost two months now due to my overwhelming angst being too much for her to feel like writing on a nightly basis~~ or else allow myself to get dragged into stuff," Rory nodded. "Like I ended up playing kickball with a bunch of friends a few weeks ago when I got bitten by a gremlin and didn't want to come out from under my covers ever again."

"Journals are good. I personally don't trust them ~~because I have sekrits liek whoa and people can read them~~, but I can see how that could be helpful," Peter said.

"Promise me that if I ever get too mopey, you'll drag me to something fun like that, okay?"

"If you get mopey, I will sing at you until you get up and do something fun," Rory promised. "That's a very scary threat. Trust me."
