Library, Sunday 12/04

Raven was at the library early today, anxious to begin looking through the books for any mention of the "Auditors" Zoe had spoken of on the radio. She clung to what little optimism she had left that they would find a way to stop whatever it was devouring worlds and people, and reverse it for their safe returns. But if a place as powerful with magic as Kaeleer had fallen, she wasn't sure how long Fandom could stand. And the Netherverse was almost gone.

Tyrion was well past the end of what he could find in his books, so he was in the library again when it opened. Getting down the books he wanted involved dragging around a footstool like some page.

He hadn't gotten a response to any of the ravens she'd sent home that week. He was deeply disquieted by that. Jaime should have answered out of love or Petyr Baelish out of the man's careful politics, even if no one else wanted to be bothered.

Like every day during the past two weeks, Ender showed up to the library early himself. He had a stack of books he was planning to dig back into, and a couple of people to watch out for.

He decided to go for the books on unusual technology this time, settling in behind a table with a copy of Cogs and Curses: the Ancient Elf Trades.

Tony nodded over at Ender, his own small pile of books in hand. Books. Seriously. This was not how he functioned.

Maybe it really was the end of the world.

Ender offered him a lopsided smile. "I think we really ought to start getting this library digitalized," he said.

He couldn't read minds. He'd just been thinking it for a while himself.

Warren had actually been given something to do today. Which was... really, really good, because so help him he'd just sit in his bed and never face the light of day again, otherwise.

So he was rummaging through assorted books about biological powers, like mutations, on the off chance that Auditors were some sort of high-octane mutant breed. He doubted he would find any leads, but it was better than nothing.

Tony had somehow managed to bathe after... he was sure how many days in the lab. Maybe he should have checked on that at some point.

And now he was at the library to look into things that weren't online or in a database he had access to.

With books.

"Hey," he said, bumping into Warren's wing to get his attention away from some super intense book.

A book documenting known genetic capabilities across the multiverse. Not exactly riveting, but there were sections about people who could banish things to other places or states of being.

... It hit a little close to home just then. Warren was happy for the diversion.

"Hey, Tony."

That was the most tired of tired little Warren smiles, right there.

Warren bit the inside of his cheek, inhaling deeply and closing his eyes for a moment before he even dared to try talking just yet.

If he didn't take that moment, he probably would have just cracked, there in the library, like... Like some kind of stupid teenager whose girlfriend just dumped him, or something.

"I don't think she will," he replied, softly. "She has a right to her anger. And she has the right to hold on to it for as long as she wants."

Or as long as she could. One of those.

Something about being back on the island had allowed Lindsey to get some much-needed sleep. Now that he was functional again, the library seemed like a decent place to go. And if there's one thing being a law student and working at a multi-dimensional full-service law firm prepares you for, it's research.

He really wished the firm hadn't been eaten by whatever it was. Their library had to have had something useful in it. But this one was probably about as good.

Wesley was in the middle of swapping out one stack of books for another when he passed someone who looked oddly familiar. And not in the someone-who-graduated-last-year-who-he-might've-seen-around sense. He was just puzzling it out when he remembered the news clipping Cordelia had just sent him the other day. That lawyer at Wolfram and Hart had just been promoted.

Well. This was awkward.

"Excuse me," Wesley said awkwardly, "but I think I might know you from somewhere."

Unless he was wrong and he didn't. That would be even more awkward.

Lindsey looked up from the book in front of him. He'd read the the same paragraph a dozen times already, a distraction was probably a good thing.

"I graduated in '06," Lindsey said. "But I've been back a few times. Live in LA now. Or I did." And then LA got eaten by scary blackness so now he had nowhere to live at all. "Don't recognize you though. Sorry." And even if he did, he wasn't in the best of mental states and might forget anyway.

Topher was just going to flee into the library and hide from Peter, thanks.

So, you know, he was panting and winded by the time he got there, and he promptly hid himself in the comic book section to not do any kind of useful research at all.

Right. Yesterday's time spent studying in Katniss' room had been -- arguably more stressful than studying in the library. So Wesley was back here today, poring over any mystical texts he could find.

Again.

Jen -- who'd left her world behind reluctantly, under heavy protest, and only because in the end she realized that someone had to remember them all -- had gotten in late last night, and hadn't gotten much sleep at all. Actually, she'd just spent the night going over old podcasts and exhaustively running searches on the #portalocityfail hashtag, so she hadn't gotten any sleep at all.

Still, armed with coffee, her computer, and a determined expression, she headed straight for the library, got jacked into the databanks, and got to work.

Parker was glad to see someone else teacher-or-alumni-aged here, so on returning from one of her excursions into the main stacks, she asked, "Anything useful yet?"

Jen shook her head and ran a hand over her face. "Three dozen different leads on creatures that can alter memory, or reality, and none of them come anywhere close to having an MO that lines up with what we've got so far," she admitted, and could her voice sound any more like she'd been gargling sand? Not really, no.

"Hey you," Isabel said when she spotted Jen. "I'm glad you made it."

Parker hadn't slept. She'd headed to Galactica Point after Wyatt returned, done her dealing in private, then headed for the Perk and a gallon of coffee. She was reading the magic treatises today, especially Examinations of Arrogant Avatars: Representations of Immortal Thought. It was a start.

Scully had spread out her notes, and was trying to come up with a useful list of questions.

1. Does anyone have final authority over these Auditors?
2. Have they done this before?
3. If so, how was it reversed?
4. What weapons, or negotiations, were used?
5. If not: What is different this time?
6. Can an accommodation be reached?
7. If not, how can we elude them?

Yesterday's stress on top of everything else had finally caught up with Isabel and for once she'd slept in rather later. But after lunch she made her way to the library, grabbed a book and started reading.

She had a feeling this was going to take a while. Which wouldn't have been bad. Except for where she was starting to feel like they were running out of time.
