Library, Sunday 12/04

Raven was at the library early today, anxious to begin looking through the books for any mention of the "Auditors" Zoe had spoken of on the radio. She clung to what little optimism she had left that they would find a way to stop whatever it was devouring worlds and people, and reverse it for their safe returns. But if a place as powerful with magic as Kaeleer had fallen, she wasn't sure how long Fandom could stand. And the Netherverse was almost gone.

Tony had somehow managed to bathe after... he was sure how many days in the lab. Maybe he should have checked on that at some point.

And now he was at the library to look into things that weren't online or in a database he had access to.

With books.

"Hey," he said, bumping into Warren's wing to get his attention away from some super intense book.

A book documenting known genetic capabilities across the multiverse. Not exactly riveting, but there were sections about people who could banish things to other places or states of being.

... It hit a little close to home just then. Warren was happy for the diversion.

"Hey, Tony."

That was the most tired of tired little Warren smiles, right there.

"You look as tired as I feel," Tony informed him. "I thought you had a healing factor."

He needed one of those...

It was handy, but it could only do so much for heartbreak.

"It got Bobby," Warren replied, biting the inside of his cheek. "And... some other stuff. I haven't been sleeping so well, these days."

Tony nodded, eyes dropping to the table. "Here I thought I was the only insomniac."

"Sleep is... pretty overrated these days, I guess," Warren murmured, sticking a scrap of paper between the pages and closing the book he'd been poring through. "Not really any time to waste, you know?"

And other things. But for now, it was totally all about crunch time. In spite of the fact that Warren had more or less been wallowing for over a week now.

That was very true. "Have you eaten at least?"

Thank god for Topher ordering pizza or else Tony would have been eating something from the fridge far past it's prime. How he survived on his own... was a bit of a mystery.

"There was... a little bit of popcorn yesterday?"

That counted. Though it was kind of a crazy irony that Tony was the one lecturing anybody about eating, given his tendency to hole up in his lab.

A beat.

"You?"

He was the expert. "I'm pretty sure there's a joke about eating like a bird in here somewhere," Tony decided after a moment. "Topher ordered pizza when I went back to the dorms for-"

Clothes and a shower.

"-sanity."

"Sanity, huh? That's where they've been keeping it, these days?"

Warren hadn't noticed it while he was there. Maybe he hadn't been looking hard enough.

"I'm going to have to get some for myself sometime soon, I think. I kind of brutalized my phone yesterday."

"Something like it," Tony admitted, half wondering if they could order pizza to the library. "Bad call?"

"Bobby's 'Looks like the world is ending and Sookie and I are going with it, please feed the rabbit,' call came at a bad time," Warren sighed, shrugging. "Karla and I... we had a falling out. I guess."

That was a good word for it, right?

Sure it was.

Tony winced, looking away. "You want to talk about it?"

"The part where one of my closest friends is dead, or the part where my girlfriend screamed 'I hate you I hate you' and called me a coward after I kept her from stepping through the last portal back to Kaeleer?"

It had been a red letter day!

He could relate to the best friend thing with Rhodey being--very gone now. But the rest...

"...what?"

Warren's jaw clenched a little.

"She was trying to catch a portal back to Kaeleer," he muttered, softly. "So that she could... be with her people at the end. Instead of, I don't know, helping us in stopping the end from coming. I... grabbed on and didn't let her through."

"She called you a coward," Tony replied slowly. "I'm not sure I'm following that part."

"I'm... not sure if I do," Warren admitted, shrugging his shoulders and looking down at the table. "I wasn't really asking her too clarify by that point. I guess... I guess she figured that I stopped her for my sake, or something."

Instead of, oh, hers.

Okay, so Karla had gone completely insane. That was helpful. Really.

Tony rubbed his eyes, willing things to make sense again. But he wasn't Wanda Maximoff and could not alter reality like that, so... he was stuck with this. "Okay, we're getting you food and some of that sanity I needed too."

"Sanity sounds kind of great," Warren admitted, staring down at the cover of the book that he'd been going through.

He'd be done looking into a mutant's genetic limitations by now if he had access to his father's research. Mostly, by this point, he was just flipping through in an attempt to confirm things he already knew as they applied to beings in other realities.

"So long as we're not off hunting it down for too long, I guess. Sanity is easier to appreciate while you still exist."

"They just let you take the books with you," Tony replied like this was weird and confusing to him. "So, we can eat and research."

Why did they just give people books? WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU, LIBRARY?

And it wasn't even piracy! LIBRARIES WERE CONFUSING.

"... Good point," Warren allowed, biting his lip for a moment before starting to pack up the rest of the books that were heaped up around him. "What were you looking into?"

"Some papers written by a scientist from back home," Tony replied, holding up something with a title that was possibly more technobabble than anyone ever needed in their life. Author: R. Richards. "Some version of him taught here over the summer."

Yes, that was a braincrush Tony had.

Well, it was a pretty fantastic brain, really. If anyone could stretch the limits of scientific research, it was Reed.

"Anything useful so far?"

"I'm--ah--struggling a little to follow him," he admitted.
