Library, Sunday 12/04

Raven was at the library early today, anxious to begin looking through the books for any mention of the "Auditors" Zoe had spoken of on the radio. She clung to what little optimism she had left that they would find a way to stop whatever it was devouring worlds and people, and reverse it for their safe returns. But if a place as powerful with magic as Kaeleer had fallen, she wasn't sure how long Fandom could stand. And the Netherverse was almost gone.

"I'm fine," Ender said. He looked perfectly fine.

He wasn't. "Been in the lab?"

Of course he wasn't.

"Since... Monday, yeah." That wasn't odd at all.

"How many readings did you take?"

Not 'did'. How many, yes.

"Sweeping scan. Every hour." Ender was smart, he could do the math.

Ender nodded slowly. "Did you find anything?"

"Just how fast things stopped being where they should."

"Does it come in spurts?" Ender asked, "Or is it a consistent thing across the board?"

"If there's a pattern, I haven't found it yet," Tony admitted. "It's, like, anti-pattern."

"Anti-pattern...?" Ender prompted. "What does that mean...?"

"Any time I think I have it figured out, it changes. Like a mutating virus."

Ender frowned thoughtfully. "What if this thing is sentient?"

Tony shot him a look. "That's a little scary of a thought, you know."

"It's something we'll have to take into account," Ender noted. "What if 'The Auditors' is just... this thing, whatever it is?"

So close, and yet so far.

"Or it's like a computer program and they're the programmers?"

Let him have his tech analogies, Ender.

"A computer program that's overwriting reality?"

SEEMS LEGIT.

"It's possible."

Better than a dude in purple armor eating all the planets!

Tony nodded, thinking it over again. "But how could you even make something that powerful?"

"By having a big enough computer," Ender said dryly.

"That's a Really big computer."

"Well, it can't be that big," Ender mused, though now he sounded a little amused. "It only needs to be smaller than the multiverse, after all."

"Which is vaster than we can comprehend," Tony pointed out.

"So's this hypothetical computer," Ender said, "Unless microchips have really skipped ahead for a few more centuries."

"You never know." Tony slumped back. "How is your grasp on physics?"

"They have yet to float away from me," said Ender, proving that spending time with Ben was horrible for his ability to make jokes. "Though I'm better at astrophysics than Earth physics."

But the way the IF drilled its students on this stuff, he knew more than enough.

Tony snorted, shoving one of the journals over at Ender. "I'm not horrible at it, but this guy is... past me."

Damn it, Reed Richards. Stupid, sexy brain.

"Said the mechanical engineer to the military strategist," Ender muttered, but he took the journal anyway.
