Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Some parts of the East Coast might have been freaking out about a hurricane, but there was no such madness going on in Fandom. Sure, it was a little hot out, with the sun shining and not much breeze happening, but all the milk and toilet paper on the island was safe, and that was important, right? Besides, once the new folks started learning about their new home, there'd be more than enough freaking out to go around.

The usual main attraction had been set up first: a large buffet of food and drinks had been laid out next to all the information the new arrivals would need, and then the blue and gold tables and chairs had been arranged across the rest of the lawn. Everything was just about done when the shuttle arrived, and it was time for a picnic once again.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Meet Your Roommate [Fall 2011]

The list of roommate assignments was located in a prime spot on one of the tables. Current students who had been assigned new rooms and/or roommates had been handwavily informed of the change.

William had been a bit apprehensive about the identity of a new roommate, since he knew a female one was certainly within the realm of possibility. However, time at Fandom had gotten him to... mellow somewhat regarding the concept. He still found it rather scandalous, all told, but many seemed to make it work, and so if it happened to him, well. So would he.

When he saw the name of his new roommate, he had to laugh. True, his concerns regarding a female roommate were realised, but... at least this was someone he in a mostly handwavey way kind of knew.

Rosella was feeling both apprehension and excitement at seeing who her roommate would be, knowing that it could be anyone and that the experience of sharing a living space with someone would be so queer and curious and interesting that she certainly hoped it was a good one. Once she saw the name paired with her own, though, she had to laugh, and immediately seek the boy out.

"Mr. Murdock, as I live and breathe!" she laughed, putting her hands on her hips as she smirked at her brother's former roommate. "I should certainly hope that this isn't the results of you working in cahoots with Mother, to have someone keep a close eye on me!"

Oh, she laughed. But there was a particular glint in her eyes that suggested that this really had better not be the result of him working in cahoots with her mother...

"Oh, I wouldn't be concerned, Miss-" he sighed, because why did so many people of his acquaintance not have proper surnames? "Miss Rosella," he finally settled on. "As it happens, I'm quite familiar with your mother's... desire to keep abreast of every aspect of her children's lives. And while I admire the fact that she concerns herself so, I am also certain that every little last detail needn't really be reported back upon."

Petra stared at the roommate list for a good minute or so before pronouncing, "Okay, I have no idea how to say that. Day...Day-nair-is? Daner-is? Dana-reese? Is there anybody around whose name I'm mangling?"

"Daenerys," corrected the girl in question upon hearing her name. She looked around, spying the young woman who'd been struggling with it (which Dany was hardly used to, being well known both in the Free Cities and the Seven Kingdoms) and wandered over, watching to make sure that all three of her small dragons followed. "Da-nair-ease. You were closest the first time. Are you Petra?"

Right. More hallucinations. Ignore them and maybe they'd go away? "Yep, that's me! Petra West, hi," Petra said, smiling her best pageant smile and holding out her hand.

"It's wonderful to meet you," Dany said, gracefully placing her hand in Petra's and clasping it briefly. Someone here didn't understand handshakes, no. "Where are you from, Petra?"

She was slowly coming to the realization that she might be the only person from her world here at all, which was both a huge relief and terrifying.

"Rhode Island," Petra said. "If you're not from America you might not know where that is?" Since from the way the girl was dressed, and with the not shaking hands, it was...hard to say. "It's really tiny. And it's not actually an island, that's just the name. Uh, where are you from, because if it's Cleveland I just made an ass of myself."

Lucrezia found herself near the bald student who was not a monk as he examined the list.

"Roommates?" she asked. "Are we not given our own space to lodge in?"

Lex shrugged. "Boarding schools tend to do that. Unless your parents are rich enough to pay them not to." Say Lionel Luthor rich, except for those couple of terms when his dad thought it'd be good for him to share.

"Papa has wealth enough," she said, "but I should hate to trouble him over this."

Or give him reason to discover that she was not, in fact, at a nunnery.

"Is this ... typical, of a boarding school? To share bedrooms between ladies and gentlemen?"

Tara had filled out the form asking for a new roommate weeks before, but she'd almost forgotten about it by the time she got to the picnic. She blinked in confusion at the new name next to hers.

But it would be all right. If Natalie was mean or stupid or hated witches ... well, it kind of wouldn't be the worst thing in Tara's world right then.

Natalie wasn't stupid, was undecided on witches (having never met one before), and wouldn't get too mean for a few more years. She was, however, approaching the other girl now that she'd spotted the right name tag.

"Tara?" she asked, coming up to her. "I'm Natalie. Nat. Whichever. Guess we're roommates?"

"Fresh out of the portal," Natalie confirmed, like that was something she was completely used to. Hey, she was going to date someone with vegan superpowers in the future; portals fit into her worldview just fine, even if she hadn't used one before today. "I was still in Montreal about an hour and a half ago."

Bruce was the type to check roommate lists and memorize them so he knew where people were. This time he was surprised to find that he had a new one.

Chuck. Bruce knew him a little. It could be worse. He started watching out for Chuck so they could get acquainted.

Chuck on the other hand, was less surprised to see his name up there. He hadn't really expected to end up with a single more than a week. It hadn't been more than that last time.

Moving room? He hadn't expected that. There were a lot more stairs between school and bed this way...

But at least it was someone he recognised. That was a positive. Chuck offered Bruce a wave and an only mildly hesitant grin as he wandered over. "I promise that needing a new roommate does not mean I scared the last one away," he offered by way of greeting. "I don't think."

"I'd never assume something like that," Bruce said, sliding into a a friendly tone. "Well, I might depending on the person. Who was your last roommate?"

"Uh, Leia?" Did he know her? ... Well, the answer was probably, if he was honest. Bruce was far more of a ladies man than Chuck would ever be.

Hanna scanned the list for her roommate's name. Rapunzel. That was different. Hanna hoped they would get along. She'd never had a roommate before.

Rapunzel had managed to get a name tag on. And now she was looking for her 'roommate'. She smiled to herself. That was a funny word! And a fun one, too!

Roooommmate.

She just knew that her roommate was going to be nice and fun and teach her all sorts of neat things!

Now if she could just find 'Hanna Marin'. Hmm... who looked like a Hanna?

Wait. What did a Hanna look like?

Hanna had no idea what Rapunzel looked like, so she was paying extra attention to nametags. That seemed to eventually pay off.

"Rapunzel?" Hanna said as she approached the other girl.

Being deep in thought considering just what a Hanna might look like made it hard to notice people approaching you, so Rapunzel jumped back in surprise. "Huh? Yes? Me?"
