Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Some parts of the East Coast might have been freaking out about a hurricane, but there was no such madness going on in Fandom. Sure, it was a little hot out, with the sun shining and not much breeze happening, but all the milk and toilet paper on the island was safe, and that was important, right? Besides, once the new folks started learning about their new home, there'd be more than enough freaking out to go around.

The usual main attraction had been set up first: a large buffet of food and drinks had been laid out next to all the information the new arrivals would need, and then the blue and gold tables and chairs had been arranged across the rest of the lawn. Everything was just about done when the shuttle arrived, and it was time for a picnic once again.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Hanna had no idea what Rapunzel looked like, so she was paying extra attention to nametags. That seemed to eventually pay off.

"Rapunzel?" Hanna said as she approached the other girl.

Being deep in thought considering just what a Hanna might look like made it hard to notice people approaching you, so Rapunzel jumped back in surprise. "Huh? Yes? Me?"

"I'm Hanna," she told her. "Looks like we're going to be roommates."

Oh. So that's what a Hanna looked like!

"Oh, hi!" Rapunzel smiled brightly. "I'm Rapunzel!"

Wait, Hanna had already figured that out.

"Um..." She looked down at her (bare) feet. "I've never had a roommate before." Hopefully Hanna wouldn't hold that against her.

"Oh, well. That just means we already have something in common," Hanna said, offering a smile. "I've never had one before, either."

"Oh!" Somehow that made Rapunzel feel better about the whole situation. "I guess," she grinned, "we'll both be learning together, then?"

That sounded... fun!

There was a small cheep and then a little green head popped up through the hair on her shoulder. "Oh, and this is Pascal!" She glanced down at him. "And don't worry about his expression. He's really a big softie."

Hanna jumped back a little, startled. "Is...is that a frog?"

She wasn't sure. All she knew was that it was green and...reptilian?

Pascal's impression somehow seemed to shift, becoming even less impressed. And maybe a little insulted.

Rapunzel just giggled. "No. He's a chameleon!" She glanced down at the lizard on her shoulder. "Go on. Show her."

Pascal somehow seemed to sigh, as if put upon, but then puffed himself up a bit like he was about to do something impressive. And then he turned purple, blending in with the color of Rapunzel's dress.

Hanna watched, eyes wide. "...okay...that is kinda cool. How does he do that?"

This was better than freaking out over the thing, at least.

Um.

Wow.

That was a good question.

"He's a chameleon?" Isn't that just how chameleons worked? She only knew the one, of course, so maybe he was just extra special.

Hanna shrugged. "That's a good enough answer for me. I'm not an expert on chameleons or anything."

She did think he was a frog at first.

"Well, Pascal is not your average chameleon," Rapunzel pointed out proudly. Though it wasn't like she'd encountered any other chameleons to compare him to. It was just that he was such a good friend that he simply had to be special. She just knew it!

"I hope you don't mind having him as a roommate too?" she asked just a bit diffidently. "He's a lot of fun!" So Rapunzel was sure they'd all get along!

Hanna was admittedly wary, but she wasn't going to keep a girl from her pet. "It's cool."

To Pascal, she added, "Just try not to blend in with my stuff, okay?"

Great. Now she was talking to a chameleon.

Pascal lifted his forleg to offer Hanna a jaunty salute.

Rapunzel giggled softly. "He'll be good," she promised.

Then she paused, a sudden thought occurring to her.

"Stuff?"

"Yeah, the things I brought with me? All the necessities? Clothes, shoes, makeup, hair care products..."

Speaking of. "Your hair is amazing. What conditioner do you use?"

"Is... is it okay if I didn't bring anything? Even... what's conditioner?"

Having magic hair had all sorts of advantages when it came to keeping a healthy sheen.

"You really didn't bring anything?" That would explain the lack of shoes. Hanna thought she was just trying to be bohemian or something.

"You can borrow some of my stuff...if you want," she offered. "I have a lot of shoes to share."

Hanna then had another idea. "We can go shopping sometime, too!"

More like Rapunzel hadn't planned on being gone so long, but things just seemed so interesting here that surely a few more days, or maybe a week or a month, would be fine.

She could just send mother a letter! To let her know she was okay!

"You've never been shopping?" Oh this girl was deprived! Or maybe she had a difficult financial situation? Hanna didn't just want to assume... "I can teach you all about shopping. If you want me to."

Hanna would be the best teacher of shopping ever. She was an expert!

"Really?" Rapunzel's face was excited, but then her smile slipped a bit and she looked down at her feet in embarrassment.

"I guess, well... There are a lot of things I haven't done." But that was why she was exploring! To see new things!

And it looked like she'd lucked into a roommate who would help her do that!

"I have a feeling this is going to be a lot of fun!" And she did. She hadn't been sure about this whole roommate thing, but now? Now Rapunzel was thinking it was going to be a lot of fun.

Hanna wasn't sure about the roommate thing either, but she felt better already. At least Rapunzel wasn't some psycho threatening her through text messages. "Totally fun."

Rapunzel was struck by a sudden idea. "Hey! I should bake cookies!"

Wait.

"You do like cookies, right? I mean, I could always bake muffins or cupcakes!"
