Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Some parts of the East Coast might have been freaking out about a hurricane, but there was no such madness going on in Fandom. Sure, it was a little hot out, with the sun shining and not much breeze happening, but all the milk and toilet paper on the island was safe, and that was important, right? Besides, once the new folks started learning about their new home, there'd be more than enough freaking out to go around.

The usual main attraction had been set up first: a large buffet of food and drinks had been laid out next to all the information the new arrivals would need, and then the blue and gold tables and chairs had been arranged across the rest of the lawn. Everything was just about done when the shuttle arrived, and it was time for a picnic once again.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Grab a nametag and find your new friend! Maybe if you're nice, you'll get eased into the things you need to know.

The list of roommate assignments was located in a prime spot on one of the tables. Current students who had been assigned new rooms and/or roommates had been ~~handwavily~~ informed of the change.

Enjoy them while they still have no idea what they've gotten themselves into!

Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hurricane shall keep us from our appointed picnic!

William had been a bit apprehensive about the identity of a new roommate, since he knew a female one was certainly within the realm of possibility. However, time at Fandom had gotten him to... mellow somewhat regarding the concept. He still found it rather scandalous, all told, but many seemed to make it work, and so if it happened to him, well. So would he.

When he saw the name of his new roommate, he had to laugh. True, his concerns regarding a female roommate were realised, but... at least this was someone he ~~in a mostly handwavey way~~ kind of knew.

Petra stared at the roommate list for a good minute or so before pronouncing, "Okay, I have no idea how to say that. Day...Day-nair-is? Daner-is? Dana-reese? Is there anybody around whose name I'm mangling?"

Petra pinned her nametag to her dress and looked around hopefully. She needed someone to reassure her that she hadn't accidentally shipped herself to an asylum. She needed that a lot.

Continuing the theme of at least attempting to avoid too much notice, Lex's nametag only had his first name written on it.

Steve was here, smiling warmly and ready to greet the new students and assure them that no, they hadn't fallen into the rabbit hole.

Although if they recognized him they were probably more acquainted with the vagaries of the multiverse than many of Fandom's students to start with.

Lex ran his finger down the list until he found his name.

Well, that was definitely different from Excelsior.

Bond leant against a handy wall, watching the goings on with interest.

Oz had cookies.

Cookies that weren't bugged.

That would be silly.

Spock's eyebrow raised when he found his roommate's name on the list. Another female, it seemed. Very well. He'd gotten along well enough with his previous two roommates, after all.

He stepped away from the list so that others could read it and began looking around for this 'Susan Sto Helit.'

Alistair was there, at least at the beginning; he was eyeing the food hungrily the entire time.

He probably wasn't going to stand still for long.

Zoe was smiling as she guided Grace through the crowd, but anyone who knew her well might have been able to tell that her expression was a little forced. She was still telling herself that the school board was playing some kind of trick on her, but that didn't mean she felt safe assuming, well, that the school was safe. Luckily, she had a hungry child to take care of, although she was splitting her attention between Grace and looking around at the new folks, to see what they might be in store for this time around.

[AFK until 1:00pm but I had to get her in here while I had time. :)]

Tyrion found his 'buddy' (http://halfman-lion.livejournal.com/1488.html) first, then made his way over to stand with the other adults. He had a book in his bag, but not the slightest intent of reading. He'd learn more now by watching people.

Tara had filled out the form asking for a new roommate weeks before, but she'd almost forgotten about it by the time she got to the picnic. She blinked in confusion at the new name next to hers.

But it would be all right. If Natalie was mean or stupid or hated witches ... well, it kind of wouldn't be the worst thing in Tara's world right then.

Quinn figured anybody with a name like Daenerys was either from some other reality or had crazy mean parents, so she'd stolen an idea from Karla and made a 'welcome to Fandom' basket for the girl. The basket had gourmet chocolates, a prepaid phone, a Fandom High Gremlins t-shirt and leggings, aspirin, and a couple other ~~moddable~~ odds and ends.

Nametag filled in neatly and in caps and plastered to her chest, she was cheerful as she watched for her new little sibling. She was sure she'd have much to teach.

Was that a dwarf? Alistair hadn't seen one of those since he'd left Thedas, and he was starting to wonder if Fandom's world had any at all. Having spotted one - albeit with shorter arms than he was used to on a dwarf - he gladly embraced the familiar and made his way over.

"I haven't seen you before," he greeted, cheerfully, "So you must be new. Welcome to the madhouse."

"Hey!" Marshall said, catching sight of the nametag; his own had his full name as well as a drawing of a caffeine molecule. He gave Lex a bright smile, remembering his own newbie day. "Are you Lex Luthor, or am I still looking for my new little sibling?"

Yeah, the name recognition, not so much; maybe if Lex had been a Pearson... Although that family was decidedly less crazy.

"Happy to be here," Tyrion said, gauging the young man hopefully. He had a bit of a puppy look, but that was expected in a summer soldier. "Lord Tyrion Lannister. They brought me on to teach. You're the first I've seen in armor."

"Well, call me old-fashioned, but I like to dress for an occasion," Alistair said, grinning. "It does always seem to be the same occasion I'm dressing for, but you - well, my wardrobe - can't have everything."

Bruce was the type to check roommate lists and memorize them so he knew where people were. This time he was surprised to find that he had a new one.

Chuck. Bruce knew him a little. It could be worse. He started watching out for Chuck so they could get acquainted.

After talking to Columbus, Tyrion waddled over to the woman his buddy had indicated as being the head of the school.

"Lady Washburn," he said, with a slight, formal bow of his head. "I'm Tyrion Lannister. My teaching buddy said you were the head of the school."

Tyrion laughed slightly. "More feasts than fighting at the school? I can't say I'd complain."
