Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Some parts of the East Coast might have been freaking out about a hurricane, but there was no such madness going on in Fandom. Sure, it was a little hot out, with the sun shining and not much breeze happening, but all the milk and toilet paper on the island was safe, and that was important, right? Besides, once the new folks started learning about their new home, there'd be more than enough freaking out to go around.

The usual main attraction had been set up first: a large buffet of food and drinks had been laid out next to all the information the new arrivals would need, and then the blue and gold tables and chairs had been arranged across the rest of the lawn. Everything was just about done when the shuttle arrived, and it was time for a picnic once again.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Zoe was smiling as she guided Grace through the crowd, but anyone who knew her well might have been able to tell that her expression was a little forced. She was still telling herself that the school board was playing some kind of trick on her, but that didn't mean she felt safe assuming, well, that the school was safe. Luckily, she had a hungry child to take care of, although she was splitting her attention between Grace and looking around at the new folks, to see what they might be in store for this time around.

After talking to Columbus, Tyrion waddled over to the woman his buddy had indicated as being the head of the school.

"Lady Washburn," he said, with a slight, formal bow of his head. "I'm Tyrion Lannister. My teaching buddy said you were the head of the school."

Being called a lady always put Zoe in a pleasant mood, so Tyrion earned himself a smile and a small bow of the head too. "Your teaching buddy was correct. It's a pleasure to meet you. Did you have any trouble finding us?"

Tyrion shook his head briefly. "The boat dropped me at the causeway, and the walk from there wasn't as bad as it could have been."

It was enough that his legs would be hurting for days, but that was his problem, not the principal's. (Whatever that title meant.) He'd need to buy a horse once he was a bit more settled.

"I was curious -- are you the lady of these lands, or is there a lord I should meet?"

"I'm in charge of the school, but if you want to talk to the person who runs the town, you'll need to speak to the mayor, Nate Summers," Zoe said, doing her best not to smirk at the thought of Cable being a lord. "He's usually at the Town Hall."

Tyrion nodded. "That's the name Columbus gave me," he said. "I didn't believe there wouldn't be a lord over the both of you, and a king over him. How do decisions get made?"

It was a point of genuine curiosity, now that he had it through his head that Columbus hadn't just been misinformed.

Zoe was very grateful for all the people she'd met from kingly times before, so she was just a little thrown by the question. "We don't need a king here. It's a fairly small island," she explained. "Nate and I make decisions together when we need to, to make sure the students are safe in the town, and that the people who live in town are safe from the students. It's worked well so far, at least."

"Hello Principal Washburn!" Jamie called out to her from a safe distance of twenty feet away. "You're not carrying any weapons are you?"

Zoe whirled around at the sound of Jamie's voice and glared hard at him. "You are not supposed to be here," she said shortly, because no, unfortunately, she wasn't armed.

Grace, not sensing that anything was amiss, looked up at Jamie and waved. "Hi!"

"Well, I can stand overvthere if you want," Jamie said pointing at another spot near the buffet. He then waved back at Grace and made a silly face for her.

Grace giggled, and Zoe only glared harder. "Are you seriously here to teach? To be around impressionable teenagers?"

"Well isn't that what a teacher is supposed to do?" Jamie asked. "And you can't tell me I'm the worst teacher that ever showed up here."

The sad part was, he really did have a point there. "You're in the top ten though. What in the world are you going to teach people?"

"Not my fault," Zoe said. "The school board hates us and wants us to go crazy, that's the only explanation I can think of."

Zoe was beginning to wish she'd brought alcohol to the picnic, students or not. "I know, I saw him. I don't know why he's here," she said, shaking her head. "I mean, I do, but it can't be real. He's supposedly teaching."
