Some parts of the East Coast might have been freaking out about a hurricane, but there was no such madness going on in Fandom. Sure, it was a little hot out, with the sun shining and not much breeze happening, but all the milk and toilet paper on the island was safe, and that was important, right? Besides, once the new folks started learning about their new home, there'd be more than enough freaking out to go around.

The usual main attraction had been set up first: a large buffet of food and drinks had been laid out next to all the information the new arrivals would need, and then the blue and gold tables and chairs had been arranged across the rest of the lawn. Everything was just about done when the shuttle arrived, and it was time for a picnic once again.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Quinn figured anybody with a name like Daenerys was either from some other reality or had crazy mean parents, so she'd stolen an idea from Karla and made a 'welcome to Fandom' basket for the girl. The basket had gourmet chocolates, a prepaid phone, a Fandom High Gremlins t-shirt and leggings, aspirin, and a couple other ~~moddable~~ odds and ends.

Nametag filled in neatly and in caps and plastered to her chest, she was cheerful as she watched for her new little sibling. She was sure she'd have much to teach.

Daenerys had ridden her silver across the causeway, after bidding Ser Jorah a safe time without her in Essos. (He, in his grave way, had assured her again that this was the best, for her own good and for that of the khalasar she was fostering. She was still struggling with the idea.)

As a result, when she arrived at the picnic, she was still dressed in Dothraki garments - loose, woven trousers and a similar top bound loosly around her. She'd thought to change, but that would require meeting not only her roommate, but someone who'd tell her anything about this place, first.

She'd made sure her three dragons were staying close, Drogon on her shoulder as usual, before looking around anxiously for someone who looked a Quinn. And she smiled to find it was the lovely young woman with the basket. "Hello," Dany greeted her, a touch uncertain. "Are you - my name is Daenerys. Are you Quinn?"

"Hi, that's me," the bearer of that name confirmed. She'd pretty much been prepared for the weird clothes; the pet dragons were another story, and she was staring at Drogon as she spoke.

She was grateful Daenerys had said her name first so Quinn didn't need to mangle it.

"It's good to meet you, Daenerys. I kind of have to ask -- is that a real dragon on your shoulder?"

"They all are," Dany confirmed, lifting an eyebrow in amusement as Viserion wound around her feet. "Unless you'd believe they're exceptionally realistic puppets. But they won't hurt you, I assure you."

Unless she commanded it, anyway.

"Please, I'd rather my little sister had dragons than that she brought toys to the welcome picnic," Quinn said with a slight snort. "I'm just not used to them."

The one at Denerys's feet got another perturbed look before Quinn shaped her face into a smile. "Welcome to Fandom, either way. Did you get the rundown on the shuttle, or are you coming in blind?"

"Shuttle?" Dany asked, looking a little confused. "I rode my horse across the...bridge thing."

"Causeway," Quinn corrected lightly. "There's a ... conveyance" -- she'd explain cars later -- "that some of the new students ride from a meeting place to here. That's called the shuttle. But, okay, so nobody's talked to you yet? That helps me know where to start."

She finally realized she was still holding the basket and offered it to Daenerys. "First, here. Have a welcome gift."

"Thank you," Daenerys said somewhat elegantly as she took the basket. "And no, I've spoken to no one. I'm somewhat...confused, I guess. No one here looks like anyone or anything in the Free Cities or the Dothraki at all. I know I was meant to travel far from my home, but this is..." terrifying, "overwhelming."

"Yeaaaaah, I get that," Quinn said, letting out a long breath as she tried to figure out where to start. "Basically the island's kind of special like that. People from all different worlds and points in time end up here. So, like, my world doesn't have a Dothraki, and yours maybe doesn't have an Ohio. It's easier if you don't think about how it works."

Daenerys didn't even bother to correct her about the Dothraki not being a place. "Is Ohio the name of where you're from?" she asked uncertainly. "Are we near there now?" Because it certainly didn't seem like they were anywhere near her own home.

"It's a state," Quinn confirmed. "Not ... super-close, but probably a lot closer than where you're from. It pretty much never matters, but technically the island is part of a state called Maryland, in a country called the United States, on a planet called Earth. Any of that familiar at all?"

She wouldn't be surprised if the answer was no.
