Some parts of the East Coast might have been freaking out about a hurricane, but there was no such madness going on in Fandom. Sure, it was a little hot out, with the sun shining and not much breeze happening, but all the milk and toilet paper on the island was safe, and that was important, right? Besides, once the new folks started learning about their new home, there'd be more than enough freaking out to go around.

The usual main attraction had been set up first: a large buffet of food and drinks had been laid out next to all the information the new arrivals would need, and then the blue and gold tables and chairs had been arranged across the rest of the lawn. Everything was just about done when the shuttle arrived, and it was time for a picnic once again.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Hey!" Marshall said, catching sight of the nametag; his own had his full name as well as a drawing of a caffeine molecule. He gave Lex a bright smile, remembering his own newbie day. "Are you Lex Luthor, or am I still looking for my new little sibling?"

Yeah, the name recognition, not so much; maybe if Lex had been a Pearson... Although that family was decidedly less crazy.

Lex nodded. "That's me." The lack of reaction to the Luthor part of his name was good.

"Great! I'm Marshall Wheeler--" He glanced down at his own nametag. "--Which you probably already figured out. Uh, hi, I'm your school assigned big sibling, which means mostly that I'm here to help you out as you adjust to the island."

He paused.

"There's... a lot to adjust to."

"I already came from a boarding school, what's there to adjust to?" Lex was going to regret those words very soon when the pink pony showed up.

Marshall considered his next words carefully. "How familiar are you with the concept of interdimensional nexii? Or nexuses; I've never been really clear on that plural."

"I'm kind of hazy on my theoretical physics." For as much as the sciences got split in high school, he was more of a bio-chem kind of guy.

"Ah. See, that's kind of the thing here," Marshall explained. "The theoretical interdimensional nexus? Kinda... less theoretical here. Like, I'm from six years in the past, and my Earth has a company no one else here has ever heard of that does a lot of the experimental tech work, Pearadyne Labs."

And, you know, a wormhole in his science teacher's office, but he figured he'd break Lex in slowly.

Lex hadn't heard of them either, but that part of him that listened to his father regardless of his feelings about his parenting methods filed the name away. "That would explain why the papers are fifteen years out of that."

"'26 or '96?" Marshall asked. "Because if you're from '96, then there's some awesome computer advances you need to see, but if you're from '26, then you have got to show me what happens to computers in the next fifteen years."

Lex's ears pricked at that. "'96," he replied, grinning.

Geek.

Marshall grinned back and pulled his phone (http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_desire_hd-3468.php) out of his pocket, holding it out for Lex to take and examine. "That's my phone," he explained. "Picked it up a few days ago. It... does a few more things than just call people."

Like any geek presented with something shiny, Lex immediately started playing with the phone. "This is so awesome."

Despite himself, two completely different sets of gears started whirring in Lex's mind. Even the part of him most influenced by Lionel rejected the idea of stealing patents, but employing the people who were going to develop those patents on the other hand...

Marshall really did have no idea what he was starting here.

That said, if Lex poked into the apps on the phone, he might be drawn to a particular game featuring irate avians, in all its addictive glory.

"And that's just the start of it," Marshall explained, happy to have found another absolute geek as his little sibling. "Just think of it: fifteen years of computers, gaming, comics... All waiting for you to dive in."

He'd get to the, "Oh, and by the way, the rest of the island is absolutely crazy," in a little bit.

But that last part was going to be so much fun for Lex to find out on his own, really it was!

"I hadn't really looked at it that way." Fifteen years of Warrior Angel, even if he just stuck to the one title he had nowhere near enough space for that many comics.

[sleeeeeeeep for meeeeeee]

Pfft. Like Marshall was going to help him acquire paper copies. That's what the internet was for!

"Trust me, Lex," Marshall assured him. "There are a lot of advantages of being in the future. Although we still don't have hoverboards or flying cars."

"Not even experimental ones?" You'd think they'd have got on it by now.
