Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Some parts of the East Coast might have been freaking out about a hurricane, but there was no such madness going on in Fandom. Sure, it was a little hot out, with the sun shining and not much breeze happening, but all the milk and toilet paper on the island was safe, and that was important, right? Besides, once the new folks started learning about their new home, there'd be more than enough freaking out to go around.

The usual main attraction had been set up first: a large buffet of food and drinks had been laid out next to all the information the new arrivals would need, and then the blue and gold tables and chairs had been arranged across the rest of the lawn. Everything was just about done when the shuttle arrived, and it was time for a picnic once again.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"It's wonderful to meet you," Dany said, gracefully placing her hand in Petra's and clasping it briefly. Someone here didn't understand handshakes, no. "Where are you from, Petra?"

She was slowly coming to the realization that she might be the only person from her world here at all, which was both a huge relief and terrifying.

"Rhode Island," Petra said. "If you're not from America you might not know where that is?" Since from the way the girl was dressed, and with the not shaking hands, it was...hard to say. "It's really tiny. And it's not actually an island, that's just the name. Uh, where are you from, because if it's Cleveland I just made an ass of myself."

"Why is it called that if it's not an island?" Dany wondered with a light smile. "And I'm from Westeros, by way of Essos, but...no one here seems to know where that is."

Drogon wandered over from sniffing the ground near Daenerys' feet and wound his tail around her leg, sniffing out at Petra while the other two dragons played.

One of the dragon things was smelling her. They were tiny dragons. Teacup dragons? Petra glanced down at it, then looked quickly up at Daenerys, in case she was the only one who could see it. She didn't want her roommate to think she was crazy. "It just is," she said with a shrug. "I think originally there might have been an island named that, but then it was just the name of the colony. And then the state. And you're right, I don't know where that is, I'm sorry."

Petra was outwardly cheerful and pleasant, but her mind was running at high speed. If she was going to stick around--which she was currently unsure on--she had two: tell Daenerys she was trans, and hope she didn't freak out, or try, 'I believe in old-school modesty so I can't change in front of you.' She didn't want to lie, but she didn't want to freak out her obviously-not-from-around-here roommate, either. Who knew what they thought about trans people in Westeros?

"It's all right," Dany said warmly, "since I don't think most people here do." She glanced down at Drogon, and added, "If they bother you, they can live in the stables with my horse." Her poor silver, who had never even known a stable before today. "They don't bite, and are quite sweet, though. If you're worried. It seems people here haven't seen many dragons."

But then, neither had anyone in Westeros for years. And as it was, Daenerys was silently hoping the other girl didn't make her keep the dragons out all the time. She'd lost Drogo and Rhaego; they were all she had of her husband and child now. But then, she wasn't sure whether to speak of them, either -- Dany was still young enough to have not been married, and no one seemed to be assuming she ever had been.

If only they could read one another's narrative she'd realized how nervous Petra was, too, she probably would have oddly felt more at ease. All od Daenerys' secrets were building inside her and making her dizzy.

"Oh, you. You can see them. That's good. Dragons? They're actual dragons?" Later, Petra would talk to Toby and decide that maybe they were just some sort of weird and rare species of winged lizard called dragons, but that had not happened yet. "And oh, no, I wouldn't make you keep your pets outside! They are pets, right? I'm sure we'll get along fine. And you have a horse? That's so cool!" And probably meant she was rich.

Where was Deadpool when you needed him? Petra was dizzy more from all the crazy than her secrets, but those were definitely going to be an issue.
