Try Not to Die!! [Tuesday, June 21st]

"Since this is our last class together," Anakin said, standing before the students on the causeway, "I've made your tasks a little more difficult today."

Anyone else have a bad feeling about that? Good. "Read your clues carefully, follow the directions of the locals--as much as you can understand them if you aren't fluent in what seems to be ancient Greek--and try not to die." With that he stepped back from the clue box.

Warren's being a massive wimp so careful before leaping the bull earlier had left him a little behind, and so he was determined to make up lost ground now, scouring the marketplace for something that would be suitable for a god.

Gold always seemed like the best bet. Gods liked gold, right? But negotiating for that meant a bit of creative charades, and ultimately he'd ended up trading all of the coin he'd gotten, plus a couple of pulled flight feathers and a stick of chewing gum, for a golden statue of a fish.

... Good enough, right?

Cara had no idea what anyone was supposed to offer a god. She supposed that people offered the Creator flowers, but she wasn't really interested in giving those to anyone.

Eventually, after a lot of gesturing towards the temple she left a carver's stall with a small wooden bull.

Sam didn't barter. He was the guy who took messed up orders and just ate them so he wouldn't have to wait around or start an argument with anyone. He just didn't care enough.

It didn't help that he had no idea what someone like Poseidon wanted. He almost wished he'd kept from fish from the previous task. At one of the stalls, Sam offered up his coin and the shopkeeper ended up giving him a pretty intricate (but small) carving of a dolphin.

Dolphins swam in the water so Sam thought that'd be fine and he made the exchange before dashing off.

Well, now Toby wished he'd known about the second task before he'd left all the fish he'd just spent forever catching behind. Sea gods probably liked fish, and then he would've gotten to keep the coin. Win all around.

Since that wasn't an option, though, he was going to have to go with this necklace made of seashells.

Here, luckily, Gabrielle had an advantage she was not above using: she knew perfectly well what an acceptable offering to Poseidon was (even though she personally wasn't all that fond of him, what with him getting her and her seasickness stuck on boats for prolonged periods of time on more than one occasion), she spoke the language just fine, and she was the one who got stuck doing all the bartering in any marketplace in any town they ever stopped in.

(She didn't spend all that much time at the temple once she'd left her offering. She was pretty sure Poseidon still wasn't too pleased with her and Xena for helping Cecrops break free of that curse.)

It wouldn't make up for all the time she'd burned in her disastrous fishing attempt, but it helped, and put a spring in Gabrielle's step and a smile on her face as she headed toward the check-in point.

She didn't have much of a clue what one should offer to ancient gods, but Jocelyn did speak the language so she took some time to try to figure it out - and to get directions to the temple.

Would a sea god LIKE fish, or would he be angry at someone who caught fish? Squall tried to consider the problem and figure out what might be an appropriate gift. It turned out that it didn't matter anyway, because he somehow managed to walk right by the marketplace without realizing it.

So, instead, he just stopped a penitent on the steps of the temple and offered the coin, plus a handful of gil, for the offering the man was carrying.

Lindsay was sure shopping for the god of the sea was not an easy task. She mostly wandered aimlessly until she found a suitable offering. In this case, she went with a small statue of a seahorse.

Annie had absolutely no idea what a good offering to a god of the sea would be. So, rather than wandering around aimlessly looking for something, she went up to someone and asked. And from there all she really had to do was be cute and friendly and negotiate for it. It was way easier than she would have thought, too.

Negotiating wasn't Goose's strongest forte and so it took him longer than it might have had to find a reasonable offering to give to Poseidon.

Without staring (much), Richie managed to find a friendly looking woman to assist him. It took a lot of sad puppy faces and hand gestures at the temple and the sea and more mime work than Richie was really comfortable with, but she finally understood what it was he was asking. Or so he hoped. With her assistance, he bought what he dearly hoped was an appropriate offering for a sea god. Hopefully he wouldn't get smited. Smote? Whatever.

Hopefully nobody would have to ask for help along the "I have been lightly gored" lines, or more than lightly, but in the event that they did Tahiri was here.

Casting longing looks back toward the bull-dancing arena, because that looked like an awful lot of fun, but . . .

"I jumped over a bull."

Please, Anakin, do pardon Warren. He's just a bit shellshocked over that one.

"I jumped over a big, angry bull."

Why the hell had he done that?!

Dolphin carving in hand, Sam jogged up, still amazed that he'd done pretty well during this challenge. He'd expected to be dead last or close to it but he figured he was pretty close to the front today.

"I hope I don't smell like fish," he said apologetically.

Gabrielle totally smelled like -- no, you know, let's just leave that painfully obvious joke right there.

"That," she said as she sopped her way out of the temple and up to Anakin, "was just mean."
