Ethics [Thursday, December 17, 1st period]

"Welcome to your Ethics final," Anakin said, pacing around the classroom. "I will provide you with a series of scenarios. You tell me which option you would pick, and why. Since this is Ethics, there are no black and white correct answers to anything. What matters to me is that you have some sort of reason for your choice. If your logic is faulty or snide or clearly half-assed, that's when I will become...unhappy."

Hayley thought about this for a second, but found this one easy.

"D. She never really did much for me, any way. I've been better off without her since I left Gotham. So really, this ain't a tough question, ya know?"

"A," Jonas said after some thought. "It would be an incredibly sad event but if I tried going after her, I would just lose my own life in the process and I know she wouldn't want that. So, A."

"None of the above," Raven said. "It would depend on what the presumption she was dead was based upon. If there were a chance that my mother was alive, it would be wrong for me to do anything but attempt to find her and bring her home."

She certainly wouldn't intend to torch the village, but there was always that chance, too.

This hit Tara a little bit hard, since she fully expected to get a call like this about her own mother in the near future. (It might be a year. It might be three days.)

In the end, though, dead was dead, and it wasn't her job to mess with it.

"I -- it would be hard but you have to go with a," Tara said. "Dead is dead. You can't undo it and poetry won't help."

Emma snorted. "None of the above. Hazel has all the maternal instincts of a rabbit on morphine. I'll go with D, and hire a private investigator to find out what happened." Since it would probably be Winston's fault, and blackmail was a time-honored Frost family tradition.

"Mourn and move on," Katchoo said after minimal deliberation, "but mostly move on."

It was all she'd say on the subject in front of everyone, although she didn't have a problem with the broad implication that she really had little love to spare for her mother. She felt she had pretty good reason.

Elena had her shoulders back. She had a feeling that her responses were not going to go over well with her classmates, but ... so what.

"C," she said firmly. "You can't know if she's dead or not until you go looking. As for what you do once she's dead, that depends on whether the village was responsible. Easier just to deal with the person who did it directly."

Bobby frowned. None of those options made sense.

"I'd go after her, yeah, if it's not 100% certain that she's dead," Bobby said. "It's the 'torch the village she was in' part that I wouldn't do."

"None of the above," Ellie said. "I haven't seen her in years because she chose to leave. So I don't really care what happens."

Which was a total lie.

"I'd ask the High Lord to search for her in Hell while I search for her among the living. Whichever of us finds her gets to ask her what happened," Karla said, a touch coldly. "And then bring whomever was responsible to justice. Whether it is my justice or his, I am confident that it would be appropriate."

Using the services of Marjong the Executioner leapt to mind as a likely possibility.

Rose swallowed, trying to think of this all totally logically. "If my mom was kidnapped and thought dead, it'd have to be some insanely badass Strigoi," she said. "If she wasn't dead, she'd want to be. I'd go with C, and hopefully bring back up to stake her and the Strigoi who turned her."

"D. Get my friends to help me go rescue her." And pretend to ignore the idea that she might be dead. Also, pretend she'd be of any actual use on the rescue mission herself.

Re: Scenario #2 [12/17]

[identity profile] onlysmokesnics.livejournal.com 2009-12-17 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
Hayley again found this one easy.

"B. I mean, unsavory means sweet, right? Which means they'd be really nice things for people who probably don't have nice things happen to them, because people think they're creepy. They probably need a little sweetness, and maybe they'd even stop being creepy! It'd be a win for everyone. I wouldn't die, and people would get nice things done and they'd no longer be creepy!"

It wasn't so much that her logic was faulty, just her thinking in general.

"A," Jonas said again, shifting uncomfortably at the morbidity of these questions. "I wouldn't want to waste precious time looking for a cure when I could be spending it with someone I love especially if said cure might not be guaranteed."

Raven chose D again. "I am a healer," she said simply. "If it were an illness, I would cure it. If it were destined to be an act of violence that would take my life, then I would do whatever I could to avoid that fate."

"This question kind of assumes you're male," Tara pointed out, frowning. "I -- I guess I'd do b)? I'd be mad at myself, and I wouldn't do anything that really hurt anybody, but I'd f-feel responsible if I let somebody I loved die."

Hayley thought for a second and then answered again with ease and speed.

"D. I mean, there's other ways of getting cooperation than threats, right? Maybe you can bribe her or tickle her into giving up the info. It might be fun! Plus blowing up planets seems kinda wrong and who'd want to do that?"

She grinned, like the cat that caught the canary.

Hayley sure found these questions odd.

"C, d'uh. I mean, you can't make your kids do things. That makes you a bad parent. But you can ask and stuff, and if they both say know, well... there's always adoption?" She giggled.

Elena was hanging back after class. She wasn't entirely sure why, either.

"I don't think I passed," she said.

She wasn't apologizing, or defiant, either. This was who she was. She accepted that.

That didn't mean her Ethics professor was necessarily going to be pleased, was all.
