Ethics [Thursday, December 17, 1st period]

"Welcome to your Ethics final," Anakin said, pacing around the classroom. "I will provide you with a series of scenarios. You tell me which option you would pick, and why. Since this is Ethics, there are no black and white correct answers to anything. What matters to me is that you have some sort of reason for your choice. If your logic is faulty or snide or clearly half-assed, that's when I will become...unhappy."

He's there before and after class. He might even offer you a cookie.

Elena was hanging back after class. She wasn't entirely sure why, either.

"I don't think I passed," she said.

She wasn't apologizing, or defiant, either. This was who she was. She accepted that.

That didn't mean her Ethics professor was necessarily going to be pleased, was all.

"What makes you say that?" Anakin asked.

She had answered with the choice he'd made in all but one scenario, after all.

That wasn't the response she'd expected. It took her a few seconds to properly frame her answer.

"I was honest," she admitted, "but ... if someone asked me to pick out the answers that some really ethical, moral, upstanding person would make, I don't think they'd be the same ones."

Depending on the person. Tseng was ethical and upright, so far as that went, but he was a Turk, too. Maybe his code of ethics was different from everyone else's?

"But I didn't ask that," he replied with a little smile. "I asked you for what you would do. And as long as you're willing to pay the consequences of your choices, all I ask is that you are honest with yourself. You don't have to justify your answers to anyone in this class."

That required another few seconds of concentration before a smile of her own broke out.

"Thanks," she said. "You're not really what I expected, from an ethics teacher. More pragmatic, for a start."

Anakin's smile turned wry. "I've made my share of bad ethical choices. Judging other people for their decisions seems rather pointless."

"It usually is," she agreed. "People don't ... suddenly change their ways because someone sat around judging them."

She hesitated before adding, "... Was that ... the point of the class? Learning to be honest with yourself, in ethical situations?"

Anakin smiled. "Very good. It was also to provide you a place to stop and think about what you would do before you have to make a split second decision you might live to regret for a very long time."

Like, say, every question in the final.
