Ethics [Thursday, December 17, 1st period]

"Welcome to your Ethics final," Anakin said, pacing around the classroom. "I will provide you with a series of scenarios. You tell me which option you would pick, and why. Since this is Ethics, there are no black and white correct answers to anything. What matters to me is that you have some sort of reason for your choice. If your logic is faulty or snide or clearly half-assed, that's when I will become...unhappy."

Raven nodded. "Though so much depends on knowing more about each situation," she said. "It is not truly possible to know exactly what you will do until you face it yourself. If I faced someone who had murdered my mother...I am not certain what I would do."

Be very tempted to unleash her wrath on them, actually.

"I don't know either," Tara said, and glanced shyly to Raven. "My mom's, uh, sick. Cancer. I -- it's not like you can go magic cancer away."

Could she? If she could, she would.

"But I can," Raven said, smiling happily. "I am a healer, Tara. I can undo the damage to her body and restore her to health. Would she accept my help? I am more than willing to offer my aid."

"I appreciate the offer, but they've tried magic and it always comes back," Tara said sadly. "I can't put her through it if it doesn't work. No offense."

"My gifts are different," Raven pointed out, "but...I understand. It must be disheartening for both you and your mother to have her illness return."

"She's doing better these days," Tara said trying to be upbeat. "But ... thank you."

"If you or she ever change your minds...." Raven said. She didn't really need to finish that thought, did she? And so she switched the subject back to the class. "What did you say for the third question, the one about the rebel base and destroying a planet?"

"I think I kind of cheated," Tara confided, just as happy to be away from the subject of her mother. "I said I'd use magic. I know truth spells aren't, y'know, the best thing ever? But if it was the only way to protect my side, I'd do it."

"I said I could not imagine being in that position," Raven said, biting at her lip. Because it was a lie, technically. She could imagine, she just did not want to.

"I couldn't really imagine myself in a lot of them," Tara said, misunderstanding slightly. "I mean, the one with the pregnant wife ... kind of assumes you're a straight guy, doesn't it?"

"He did say your wife or your lover or you," Raven said. "Though I do not think I will ever have children, so it was difficult to apply to myself. And as I am a healer, I will surely cure myself of any illness that threatened my life."

"Oh." Tara bowed her head and went pink. "It helps when I listen for real, huh?"

Raven smiled. "Do not worry, I almost missed it myself. But the question was definitely slanted toward , as you said, straight boys."

"Which makes sense with the whole theory where Master Skywalker is talking about himself," Tara said, and stopped short. "... oh, God, do you think his wife was sick? I met her. She's sweet."

"I have met her," Raven said, nodding. "And as far as I know she is well. Professor Skywalker has not mentioned her being sick at all to me." She dropped her voice, feeling a little guilty about gossiping but also fretting about just what had happened in the past. "But I do know he was married before, and that she died."

"That's so sad!" Tara's eyes were huge. "F-from having a baby? Like in the question?"

For the moment, she'd forgotten gossip was rude.

"I am not certain," Raven said, "but they did have two children. Ben and Jaina are his grandchildren."

They were being awful awful TAs today.

"See? I think I even knew that," said the second awful TA. "I just didn't know his first wife had, um -- you know."

She glanced over toward the professor. "How old is he? He doesn't even look 30."

"Certainly not old enough to be a grandfather," Raven agreed. "But there is time travel involved. Ben and Jaina are from his future, as is Tahiri. It is terribly confusing, but this is Fandom." Because that explained everything.

"Fandom," Tara sighed in agreement, and then, because the subject seemed exhausted and she was starting to feel guilty about gossiping. "... so are you staying here for break?"

Raven nodded. "Yes," she said. "Karla had mentioned a trip to her home, but other than that, I will remain here. Will you?"

"I'm heading home just for Christmas itself, and I'll probably do something with Kennedy, but other than that, yeah," Tara agreed. "What's going on in Karla's world?"

"I am not certain," Raven said, "but she had once mentioned taking people to visit over the holidays. I do not know if she still plans to do so, however. I have never experienced any sort of winter holiday before, so I am looking forward to it, either here or at Karla's home."

"You should do both," Tara said, and bit her lip thoughtfully. "Or -- all three. Yule, then Christmas, then ... whatever Karla does. Y'know, kind of making up for lost time."

"Merlin invited me to join his celebration as well," Raven said. "I find the different customs fascinating."
