Tyler was late this morning, and looked a little scruffy.

... someone might have been a little hungover from some birthday drinking.

The fantastic role model tossed directions and boxes of popsicle sticks down on the lab tables.

"We're building catapults," he announced, and gave the world's shortest and sketchiest lecture on what a catapult was. "It's teaching .. engineering. And physics."

"Work together," he added, then looked at the student he had reason to assume was the despoiler of poor Smoochy "Miss Yamanaka, I'd like a second of your time after class."

Ben was building a catapult with a laser-like attention to detail today. Some people drank to repress bad memories. Ben made things.

And this was rapidly becoming the most complicated class-project catapult ever.
furnaceface: (Told you so)

//That,// Jono noted, leaning over and looking at Ben's handiwork, //looks like a little bit of brilliance, wrapped in a shroud of popsicle sticks and eccentricity.//

Which meant that, naturally, he approved.
momslilassassin: ([pos] trust me)

Re: Science! [11.02]

[personal profile] momslilassassin 2009-11-02 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Ben gave Jono a slightly forced smile. "Building things is kind of what I do," he said. "Usually popsicle sticks aren't my preferred medium."
furnaceface: (Over The Shoulder)

Re: Science! [11.02]

[personal profile] furnaceface 2009-11-02 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Jono didn't have to force a smile simply because he couldn't smile in the first place. Sometimes, he was lucky that way.

//Think of it as a challenge, perhaps,// he offered, a bit of an off-note in his own voice. //If that doesn't work, I suppose we could make a project of it after class using something a little more sturdy.//
momslilassassin: ([neg] uh oh)

Re: Science! [11.02]

[personal profile] momslilassassin 2009-11-02 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Ben tilted his head, noticing the tone change. "You okay?"

Other people's potential problems were so much more interesting than his own.
furnaceface: (Looking Around)

Re: Science! [11.02]

[personal profile] furnaceface 2009-11-02 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
//Weird weekend,// Jono replied, lifting a shoulder idly. //Bit of figuring out t'do, though I wouldn't worry about it too much here and now, mate.//

Not while there were shiny distractions to be had, right? He was British, and he had enough problems on his plate without babbling about weird emotions and relationship issues.

//And yer? Yer smile seemed off, for a moment there.//
momslilassassin: ([pos] neutral)

Re: Science! [11.02]

[personal profile] momslilassassin 2009-11-02 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Ben waved his hand equally idly. "Nothing to worry about," he said. "We should probably be concentrating on schoolwork anyway, right?"

See Ben. See Ben deflect. Deflect, Ben, deflect!
furnaceface: (Casual conversation)

Re: Science! [11.02]

[personal profile] furnaceface 2009-11-02 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
All they really needed as a nifty 'Ka-PWING' sound effect! Watch the issues as they bounce harmlessly away!

//Something like that,// Jono agreed, idly reaching a finger to poke at the popsicle sticks. //Yer've got some modifications to the original plans going on, there?//
momslilassassin: ([neu] thinky)

Re: Science! [11.02]

[personal profile] momslilassassin 2009-11-02 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Ben nodded and babbled for a good five minutes about trajectories and stress adjustments on popsicle sticks. The gist? He'd managed to get projectiles to go three times as far as they normally should.
furnaceface: (Very disappointed in you)

Re: Science! [11.02]

[personal profile] furnaceface 2009-11-02 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Which was impressive, really, even if a bit of it here and there wasn't entirely sinking in to Jono's brain matter, this morning. Maybe instead of trying to fully comprehend it, he would just make himself useful.

//Is there anything I can help with while yer go about this?// He attempted a somewhat wry look. //I'm half-decent at passing rubber bands and tape, I've been told.//
momslilassassin: ([pos] aren't I cute?)

Re: Science! [11.02]

[personal profile] momslilassassin 2009-11-02 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"Sure!" Ben said, happily giving instructions for how Jono could help. "And then we can declare war on some of our classmates!"

Mmm. Catharsis.

Dinah was having a good day so far. Any week that started with zooming around a tropical paradise would carry over a bit.

Yay catapults!

Re: Science! [11.02]

[personal profile] lovemykilt 2009-11-02 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Priestly leaned over, ostensibly to borrow some popsicle sticks.

"Talk," he whispered. "Details, woman!"

Re: Science! [11.02]

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-11-02 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Dinah chortled, and put her catapult in place to flip upward with the tap of one finger. Annnnny second-- "I had the best time. He has a flying motorcycle. And Sandover is gorgeous, and we flew over half of it, and it was just... awesome." Dinah hugged herself, looking gleeful and pink.

Re: Science! [11.02]

[personal profile] lovemykilt 2009-11-02 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Priestly blinked at her. "I'm sorry, did you just say flying motorcycle?"

Re: Science! [11.02]

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-11-02 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"A zoomer!" Dinah was waving her arms around, totally buzzed even after half a day home. "It flies at least sixty feet over the ground and goes I don't know how many miles per hour and I went through a racetrack course and it was awesome!" She paused for breath and added, "Okay, Jak was on it in case I messed up, but still!"

Re: Science! [11.02]

[personal profile] lovemykilt 2009-11-02 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Priestly stared a bit more.

"Jak let you drive it?"

Re: Science! [11.02]

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-11-02 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Dinah beamed and nodded like a bobble-doll. "Not by myself. But yes!" She grinned. "We had such an awesome time. Even with having to punch giant crabs... actually, that part was fun too."

"You were attacked by giant crabs?"

Surely Alfred never had to deal with this sort of thing.

Re: Science! [11.02]

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-11-02 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
No, but giant rats, maybe?

"They're on the beach, they're about this high," Dinah said, measuring it out at about her chest, "And they have these pinchers. One good punch lays them out though, and oh! In Sandover? Jak has superpowers!"

Of course he did. Who didn't? Except, you know, Priestly.

"Which he uses to . . . punch random giant crabs?"

A catapult seemed like something Panthro would definitely build somewhere between the Thundertank and the Feliner so Lion-o gave it a shot. Taping the various lengths of popsicle sticks together seemed rather tedious, though, and he wouldn't have minded a second pair of hands.

Spock's catapult might not rival Ben's for complexity, but it was decidedly efficient and well-constructed.
