Tyler was late this morning, and looked a little scruffy.

... someone might have been a little hungover from some birthday drinking.

The fantastic role model tossed directions and boxes of popsicle sticks down on the lab tables.

"We're building catapults," he announced, and gave the world's shortest and sketchiest lecture on what a catapult was. "It's teaching .. engineering. And physics."

"Work together," he added, then looked at the student he had reason to assume was the despoiler of poor Smoochy "Miss Yamanaka, I'd like a second of your time after class."

Sorry class is a little late; my Internet was broken until rather recently.

Yamanaka Ino

Ino was there and sort of... oozing good cheer.

Bright-eyed and delighted with herself (radio had been awesome, totally), Ino put on her most innocent expression when he told her to see him after class.

She was totally utterly innocent.

Really!

At least, if you didn't know her at all, she was doing a pretty good impression of it. Too bad the effort was rather wasted since he did know her.

"You wanted to see me, Mr. Durden?"

He managed not to roll his eyes at the innocent act.

Half because it was cute even if it was fake. Half because rolling his eyes might just hurt his head.

"I did, yeah. Thanks. Did you know when my birthday was, Ino?"

"It was yesterday," she answered promptly. Radiating innocence. "Radio said so--so happy birthday, even though it's a day late!"

She was radiating something, anyhow.

"Thanks," he said reflexively. "I didn't actually ask you to stay just for that, but -- thanks."

"If you heard radio, you also heard about the fate of my poor Rhino costume."

"I laughed," she said, unapologetically. "I mean, it was a costume and all, but that was funny to hear on the radio."

Ino paused.

"At least it was a unique sort of gift?" Probably?

"I can honestly say I've only gotten something like that once before," Tyler deadpanned, then added, "Y'know, it's funny, but someone might see something like that as a threat. But that would just be dumb, right? it is just a costume."

She tilted her head up at him, obviously considering that particular scenario for the first time. It was possible, she supposed, though she hadn't meant it that way. Ino had totally assumed that it'd be taken in the spirit it had been intended in.

Ino sometimes forgot that people didn't think the same way she did. And, now that she thought about it, that was a bit creepy of her.

...oh well.

"Do you see it as a threat?" Ino asked curiously.

Ben Skywalker

Tyler shook his head, satisfied with her response. "First off, if somebody was going to hurt me, they wouldn't play games."

He knew his enemies. Most of them were him. They might fill his office with C4 someday, but they wouldn't give him a bunch of warnings first.

"Second off ... it's a freaking stuffed animal. You'd have to be a Ratman villain to do something like that and expect somebody to get scared."

"You don't think someone could find that sort of artistry disturbing?" she asked interestedly.

Then remembered that she wasn't supposed to ask things like that. You know. Being totally innocent and all. "If it was all artistic."

And stuff.

...she was just going to keep on looking innocent, then. Very blonde, really.

Incredibly, ridiculously blonde. Yes.

"Disturbing, absolutely. I think it's artistic and a little creepy," Tyler said. "But it's a big leap from, 'wow, it took a sick mind to think of this'" -- said somewhat approvingly -- "to 'okay, so am I going to get gutted on my way to the gym tomorrow?'. I don't make that leap."

She was adorable. Or trying to be.

"Oh good," she said brightly. "Because the thinking 'bout gutting would be kinda bad."

Ben was building a catapult with a laser-like attention to detail today. Some people drank to repress bad memories. Ben made things.

And this was rapidly becoming the most complicated class-project catapult ever.

"It's not something that makes it easier for me to sleep at night," Tyler said. "But -- if you don't think it'd be a very good threat, and I don't think it'd be a very good threat, I should probably just relax and enjoy the thought and the, um, artistry."

Dinah was having a good day so far. Any week that started with zooming around a tropical paradise would carry over a bit.
