Tyler was late this morning, and looked a little scruffy.

... someone might have been a little hungover from some birthday drinking.

The fantastic role model tossed directions and boxes of popsicle sticks down on the lab tables.

"We're building catapults," he announced, and gave the world's shortest and sketchiest lecture on what a catapult was. "It's teaching .. engineering. And physics."

"Work together," he added, then looked at the student he had reason to assume was the despoiler of poor Smoochy "Miss Yamanaka, I'd like a second of your time after class."

Just a little bit. Jono wasn't going to hold it against Ben, though.

//And that,// he said, //is the entire point. Yer've never actually heard of a spitball before, have yer?//

Poor Ben. Jono would absolutely explain, if he felt the need.

Ben's cheeks flushed to try to match his hair. "That obvious, huh?"

//Yer not exactly from around here,// Jono pointed out, a smirk apparent in his eyes. //I'll try not to hold that against yer.//

"I appreciate it," Ben said with a tiny smile.

//Thought yer might,// Jono mused, and then he picked up a sheet of paper and tore a corner off, rolling it into a tiny ball between his fingertips. //They're fairly common in most Earth schools,// he added. //Chew on a piece of paper for a while, pull the insides out of a pen or use a drinking straw, and blow-dart it at somebody yer don't particularly like.//

Or at the ceiling. It was fun when you got it to stick up there!

//Serves no purpose whatsoever except to be disgusting and bloody annoying, really.//

"Ew," Ben said. Eloquently.

//Exactly!// Jono's voice almost held some vague note of triumph in there, somewhere. //Maybe next class, I'll teach yer how to make chuffing noises in yer armpits, mate.//

"...why would you possibly need to know how to do that?" Ben asked.

//Yer wouldn't,// Jono explained, //and that's the entire beauty of it.//

Never let it be said that Jonothon wasn't a collector of as many useless talents as he could possibly learn. He actually had armpits to make those noises with, and so he was going to bloody well do so.

"I know how to sing after inhaling helium," Ben offered.

It was a start!

//Well, there's a good one, then. Videogames are another, and maybe the ability to make funny shapes with yer tongue. At least, I haven't ever seen any use for a talent like that one, yet...//

Outside of the bedroom.

And Ben would never think of that use on his own.

"I can touch my nose with my tongue!"

Jono couldn't do that one, even when he'd had a tongue.

//There's a good one! Or making 'pop' sounds by pulling yer thumb against yer cheek. Which is really only good if yer singing songs about lollipops.//

Ben blushed hard. "I don't like songs about lollipops."

Someone's Shirley Temple-related gremlin bite still haunted him.

Jonothon gave Ben a somewhat weird look at that, but then dismissed it with a shrug of his shoulders. Perhaps this was one of those situations where what he didn't know wouldn't hurt him.

Or make him laugh until Ben died of embarrassment.

//To each their own, I suppose.//

"Gremlins suck," Ben said, still being a little cryptic.

//Gremlins bite,// Jono corrected, casually. //I've been fortunate enough to not have been on the receiving end of their little games since I've gotten here.//

If he kept talking like that, his luck was not likely to hold out, really.

"They go after the Skywalkers first," Ben said wryly. "I think Granddad ticked them off when he was a student."

//I suppose that makes it all the more sweet, when yer stumble across somebody who isn't a Skywalker, actin' completely off their onion, hm?//

Well, at least Jono could see the charm in it. Oh, schadenfreude.

Ben laughed. "Definitely. I make sure to have something with me that can record, just in case."

There it was! Jono had been hoping to get a laugh out of Ben, today. His expression was one of triumph, now. And as an added bonus, all of that being silly was good for him, too.

//Managed to get any good footage, yet?//

"My cousin's boyfriend and a guy who is going to grow up to be an admiral in my galaxy thought they were dancers in love," Ben said, grinning and nodding hard. "They ended up breaking a table. It was amazing."

//Definitely something yer going to have to show me, sometime,// Jono decided. Because this was totally Jonothon's decision to make, and not, say, that of the boy who owned the footage. Really. //I haven't witnessed anybody makin' absolute arses of themselves since gettin' here.//

"This was easily one of the funniest things I've ever seen in my life," Ben assured him. "You should swing by my room later this week to see it."

And Ben could really use the laugh.

//Well, then I'll have to make a point of it.// Jonothon picked up a rubber band, and idly twined it around his fingers. //Want to see one more pointless skill I've picked up over my time as a teenager from Earth?//
