Applied Science | Monday | 11.02

Tyler was late this morning, and looked a little scruffy.

... someone might have been a little hungover from some birthday drinking.

The fantastic role model tossed directions and boxes of popsicle sticks down on the lab tables.

"We're building catapults," he announced, and gave the world's shortest and sketchiest lecture on what a catapult was. "It's teaching .. engineering. And physics."

"Work together," he added, then looked at the student he had reason to assume was the despoiler of poor Smoochy "Miss Yamanaka, I'd like a second of your time after class."

"They were coming at us," Dinah protested. "Pinchers! Giant pinchers!" She did the same with her hands and two popsicle sticks, aiming at his arm.

"And did you ask them if you could hang out on their beach?"

Dinah waved a popsicle stick at him. "No, but we didn't attack them first! And they could've run away!"

"They were there first. Maybe they had babies hiding around."

Dinah frowned, then looked mournful. "Nooo! I'm sure -- Jak would've said, he would," she insisted. She was positive. Mostly sure. Pretty sure.

Positive!

"If he'd ever bothered to ask."

"Hey! You don't know! Maybe he did," Dinah said, starting to get cranky. "And just because I didn't ask, well-- okay, I should've asked, but it happened really fast and then we were gone! Three crabs, Priestly. Three! Not a lot. Just three really big crabs that came at us first!"

Darnit. She was so going to ask stuff like this, next time.

"Hey, I'm just saying. Something to be aware of."

Dinah wanted to sulk and pout now, because the buzz from the weekend was wearing off in the questions she hadn't even thought to ask, and maybe it was fine, and maybe the crabs really were the threat she remembered them being, but that wouldn't change that she hadn't asked. She sighed instead, and tapped a popsicle stick to the end of another one, and muttered, "So, how was trick-or-treating?" instead.

"The flower lady gave me two candy necklaces."

"Miss Vida?" Dinah brightened a little at that, and grinned. "Num. Where else? Did Lacey have the diner open?"

"Dunno. Didn't make it over there. Dean's little sister whacked me with her wand, so I kinda kept it simple."

"Grace?" Dinah said, surprised. "Why? She didn't want you to look like her brother?"

"I dunno, maybe? Apparently she's not allowed to hit Dean, Alec, Sam, or her parents. I'm thinking they need to broaden that definition."

Dinah laughed. "Well, she's two. And she's Dean's little sister. She's probably going to want to hit, but yeah, if they don't explain that better she's going to always be in the naughty chair in Kindergarten."

"Yeah, I think Mr. Winchester switched it to 'no hitting unless Mom and I say it's okay.'"

"Good plan. Did you go to the Samhain party, Sunday?" she asked, now in a better mood again, and tapping the sticks with the tips of her fingers. "Arthur was pretty hungover from it this morning."

"Nah, ~~my mun was working~~ I pretty much just lazed about."

Dinah grinned. "Probably just as well, if Merlin and Arthur are anything to go by." She shook her head. "Are you going home for Thanksgiving, do you think?"

"No idea. Depends on if Mom wants me to, I guess." He and his mom had made a vague sort of peace, sure, but that didn't mean she wanted him parading around Santa Cruz and embarrassing her.

"If you're not going back, you're welcome to come to Gotham," Dinah said, putting a bit of Halloween candy on the end of her catapult. "Alfred will be cooking again, yummmm."

"That could be interesting. A real Thanksgiving with, like, cold and pilgrims and crap." Yeah, he had a weird idea about New Gotham. "Though I gotta say, walking on the beach in gorgeous weather is a pretty good Thanksgiving tradition, too."

Dinah considered, then had to concede, "I can see the 'we're beating the traditions' appeal to it, yeah. I hope you get to go home and it's a good holiday, but if you don't wanna deal, you can watch the Thanksgiving day parade from our balcony with us."

"Okay, so that's a big draw, too."

Dinah grinned. "Let me know either way. Hopefully," she knocked the popsicle sticks together. "Nothing will get in the way of a good holiday."
