Library [09/17]

Sam had stopped for coffee and breakfast this morning, so he was totally alert by the time he got to the library. Whether this would translate to him doing active work, or if he'd just read more, was anyone's guess.

Sam made sure everything was set up for the library to be open, and then kept himself busy at the computer, looking for overdue books and checking his e-mail.

Second Period [09/17]

Instead of wandering aimlessly through the shelves today, Sam headed straight for the self-help section, and came back to the desk with The Long-Distance Relationship Survival Guide. This could be a very long year if he didn't get some advice.

Claire came in with coffee for Sam and hot chocolate for herself.

She noticed the title of the book when she handed him his cup. "Hey, Sam. Missing Peter, huh?"

Sam glanced up, and looked a little sheepish as he took the cup. "Yeah, it's not the same without getting to see him every day," he said. "But I'm dealing with it okay, I think. How are you?"

"Doing okay," she said. "Today's my busy class day."

She sipped her hot chocolate before asking, "So, how do you think it went yesterday?"

"I think it went great," Sam said. "Everyone did really well."

Claire grinned. "Good. Waiting to find out is the hardest part."

"Yeah, I know how you feel. I'm not going to find out about the play in town until after the weekend, I think," Sam said. "But I'll give you a hint: I wouldn't worry if I were you."

Gabrielle, who could be quite the voracious reader when she wanted to be (it helped to have an inexplicably convenient lack of language barriers, funny how that worked), had finished both the volume of Sappho and the copy of When the Love of Your Life Is Your Best Friend that she'd started, and subsequently checked out, yesterday.

Knowing perfectly well that they might get lost in her room -- she wasn't used to having places to put her things any more! -- if she didn't bring them back in, she headed into the library after driver's ed and came up to the desk with the books in her arms.

"Hello," she said cheerfully to the very, very tall boy from her literature class.

"Hey," Sam said, smiling in return. He marked the page he was on and set his book down on the desk to give her his full attention. "Can I help you with something?"

"Oh, just returning these," Gabrielle said, holding the books up. "I could just put them away myself, but the library does have rules."

"Oh, I can take care of them, it's not a problem," Sam said. "It's Gabrielle, right? I ended up looking for self help books today because of you."

"That's me," she confirmed. "And you're amazingly tall -- I mean, Sam."

Gabrielle had a sad tendency to get a little dorky around boys with a certain puppyish aspect to them.

She handed the books over to him and asked curiously, "Because of me? How?"

Lunch [09/17]

Although the announcement was physically painful to his ears, Sam couldn't stop himself from grinning. It was always nice to get what he wanted without the universe getting in his way somehow.

Chuck had been on his way to the library when the (painful) announcement was made. So he was looking proud when he came into the library with food for the both of them. "Congratulations on winning. Truly, your geekery knows no bounds."

"It's not geekery," Sam said. "It's fun. It's like leadership, in a way."

"Well I don't know about fun but I guess it'll look good on college applications," he said. Chuck knew non-legacies needed all the help they could get. "Between you and Jean I've got quite an in with the student government now, don't I?"

"Yeah, I guess you do," Sam said, laughing. "And yeah, it'll look good on applications and scholarship forms, just like everything else I do."

"I think that if I wanted to go to college I'd abuse my wealth and privilege to get in," Chuck decided. "Seems a whole lot easier."

Sam was back at the desk, still reading like a geek. There was a reason he never, ever got tired of this job.

Sam stuck around until the very end of the period, in case anyone needed something at the last minute.
