Heroing [Period 2, Class 14, Tuesday]

Today, the Danger Shop was set up with an elaborate, dirty cityscape. "GOOD MORNING, CLASS!" Hammer boomed. "Welcome to your final. Your job, today, should you choose to accept it" -- that's not the quote, Hammer, but nice try -- "is to rescue a damsel in distress!"

He held up a rather unrealistic looking blow-up doll. Yes, even in the Danger Shop, Hammer hadn't gotten realistic people simulations. One could argue that he didn't want them to risk messing up with real people, but the truth was that he had messed up the programming. The class should feel lucky to even have this much put together.

"You can use anything at your disposal -- gadgets," he said, gesturing to the table of totes moddable gadgets on a table before them, "vehicles," and he pointed to the...motley assortment of vehicles nearby, "or simply your physical skills." He flexed, in case they didn't get that.

"Your damsel is up there." Captain Hammer pointed up several stories of a building about a hundred yards away, where students might observe a blow-up doll hanging out a window. "If you take longer than two minutes, the room will catch on fire, too. Have fun!"

[give me a couple minutes to toss up the OCD, kiddies. IT'S UP YAYYYYY.]

Lion-o felt pretty well-prepared to tackle the exam, even if he wasn't too crazy about the funny-looking damsel in distress.

...he was going to save an inflatable doll from the top of a building. Yeah, that sounded about right for this class.

Ben gave a little shrug.

Well, Romeo was certainly glad he had held off on leaving for Verona for a few hours for the sake of this. Though he wasn't displeased to have a damsel to rescue.

Awww, they were playing Save the Citizen.

Warren shrugged out of his coat. It was easier to light himself on fire if he didn't have to contend with the leather jacket, after all.

Not that he had to light himself on fire for this, but really, if the opportunity were to arise he wasn't going to turn it down.

Momoko was happily surprised. After all the joking she and Lion-o had done about it, the final was something actually hero-related! Now she just had to figure out how to do it.

Was it cheating if she took the final as Blossom?

Re: Do your final!!! [04/22/09]

Romeo decided to do this the easiest way he could manage. That meant skateboarding to the building, throwing grappling hooks attached to a rope to the window (it took him three tries, but he got it to hook only a little to the left of the right place eventually), an ungainly climb up the rope -- and he strained to grab the blow-up doll by the tip of one hand.

For a real person, it would have been a precarious hold, but it worked for a blow-up doll. As did dropping "her" from halfway down the ladder.

Final complete, damsel rescued. No victory kiss?

Ben stared for a looooong time at the blue...bouncy thing...before choosing to go on horseback instead.

He galloped over to the building, tossed a grappling hook up to grab the windowsill (using a little nudge of the Force because he'd overshot just a tad), then climbed up the side of the building, plucked the doll from the window, and bounced back down with, oh, three seconds to spare.

He was very pleased with himself.

The hippity hop looked like it would have been fun, but Lion-o had a deadline. So he rushed off on one of the skateboards.

He was a good climber and opted to go straight up the side of the building to save time. It didn't take him long to get to the doll, but then he couldn't figure out how to safely go back down with the doll. He went through the window and tried to race down the stairs, dragging the blow-up doll behind him and just barely making it before the deadline passed. Unfortunately, the doll didn't quite make it and its fake plastic hair was smoldering.

Tony looked up at the doll. Okay, need to get it down to safety in less than two minutes. Easy. He lifted his hand and spoke the seven-syllable spell in an unrecognizable language. (Tony didn't actually know what the words were; he'd memorized it phonetically.) The doll dropped out of the window and landed directly in his hand. He held it up triumphantly.

It occurred to him a moment later that if it had been a real person, dropping them five stories straight down into his hand would be a pretty bad idea. Oops. Hopefully the teacher wouldn't consider that when grading him.

Tahiri's original plan had been to drive the tank over to the building and use the grappling hook to get into the room.

This was somewhat complicated by the fact that she ended up crashing the tank into the building, using up a good minute of her time trying to extricate herself from the hole, and losing the lower third of the grappling line when it snagged badly on some of the rubble on her way out . . . which ate up another thirty seconds.

By that point, since she hadn't brought any other gadgets with her, she didn't have much choice but to use a Force-assisted leap just to scale the wall with what was left of the grappling line. With four seconds to go she was still half a floor away from the doll and had to summon it to herself (it got a tiny bit singed on the way out when the fire started).

She was so not saying anything beforehand about having to do things the hard way again, she decided as she dropped back to the ground with the doll -- it was taller than her, which didn't help matters -- awkwardly slung over her shoulder.

Summer got into the tank and drove it to the building. If one could call it driving. She ran over things and smashed a lot of cars along the way. Running stuff over, knowing no one would get hurt, was fun.

Once there, she opted to climb the stairs rather than the side of the building. When she reached her destination, she grabbed the doll. Of course more than 2 minutes had gone by at this point and fire was spreading rapidly. She ran faster than she ever had in her life. It probably could have gone better, but she got the job done.

While the other students were occupied with their final, Warren took advantage of the moment to leave a wrapped box in a place where Captain Hammer would be certain to find it. The nametag read "To The Best Teacher Ever."

Warren was kind of banking on Hammer's ego prompting him to open the box. After all, no other teacher would properly... appreciate the hammer placed inside, painted in rainbow stripes all up the handle, the head painted in pink with blue spots.

It was a loving tribute, really.

If Tony were to call the doll to his hand with magic, would it get caught or stopped by anything (like the window?) on the way?
