Library, Sunday

Being himself this week meant Lee was a lot less rambunctious and a lot more calm during his library shift. He was still a little agitated for the fact that he'd lost something important but he wasn't taking that agitation out on the books or by running up and down the aisles.

No, later, he'd just punch a wall or something.

For now, he was paging through a catalog he'd requested on a whim, checking out a few different things and wondering if he could make it work. It was a complete whim and he still had no idea what he wanted to do after graduation but things were becoming a little clearer, at least.

And the catalog had pictures, if anything.

"I don't remember," Cal said in an attempt to maintain his innocence and, with it, his masculinity. "It was somewhere really random, but, it's like, hey, a jar. With a heart in it. It's the kind of thing you pick up when you see it and maybe try to find its owner."

"Well...no," Cal admitted. "Not really. It was kind of a lucky guess. I figured it...belonged to someone, and just started going down the list of students and, well...You know. Adama. Right up there on top."

Jesus, Cal thought to himself, why isn't it this easy lying to girls?

"You ever hear," asked Cal, "of that story by Edgar Allan Poe, the one where the guy kills a man and hides his heart under the floor or something, and then goes crazy because all he can hear is it thumping in his head?"

Cal nodded a little back. "Exactly," he said. "Either that, or I figured it's the kind of thing that might be cursed if it stayed in the wrong hands for too long."

"Dude," Cal pointed out, "you're a guy who keeps some paper heart in a jar. If you want to talk about odd."

"But why a jar?"

It would be so much easier to hide that crap from other people and pinchy pirates without the jar.

"Isn't it a little...cumbersome?"

He knew it had been when he was five and trying to run away with it, anyway.

"Not if you make the candy yourself," Cal pointed out because, hey, that was what he'd done.

There was a long, long pause.

"Dude; that's messed up."

But not as messed up as the fact that it sounded like Lee had a girlfriend that could probably best Claire at morbidity, and that was not fair.

"You honestly thought it could have been real?"

Weren't they the same thing?

Cal was just going to stare a moment longer, trying to form words. He shook his head as if to shake them out but all he said was, "What?"

Quickly followed by, "Wait, no. Nevermind. Don't need to know that."

There were a lot of words Cal could think of to describe it; affectionate wasn't one of them. He shook his head a little more before letting out a snort of a laugh.

"I'll have to take your word for it," he said. "Uh, enjoy having your jar back, I guess?"
